Not hungry after running, is that normal?

I am training for a 1/2 marathon in late August and I had to run 8 miles today according to my training schedule. Well, first of all I DID IT!!!! I was very excited, but wayyyyy tired.

I've read a lot about eating before and after running and how important it is to get some nutrients back into your body after a long run. Well, after my run today I just wasn't hungry at all and it took about 4 hours before I really felt like eating something. Is that bad? Should I eat something anyway when I'm finished?

Thanks in advance for any help. :)

Marcia,

It is not unusual to not be hungry after a long run like that. But it could have been you pushed a tad bit harder than you are use to. Was the weather hot, were you nauseous at all?

Sounds like you are doing great with your training. Good luck with the race..

I would recommend some Gatorade or Powerade today.

I'm not hungry at all after running either. That's great!
I'm training for a marathon too! I'll be running it on Oct 9th and I have to run 12 miles Sunday. I'm scared!!! It's supposed to be sooo hot!

Yes, it was HOT! And, I even ran at 8am. I didn't feel sick, but I know that I did push myself, there were quite a few more hills on this route than I'm used to.

Thanks for the help!

I'm training for a marathon right now too! I'll be running 13 miles tomorrow.

I do my long runs with a friend who invariably says at mile 10 how hungry she is and then begins talking about what she's going to eat for the rest of the day! Running zaps my appetite but I make sure I get somthing nutritous down soon after I am done. My favorite is frozen fruit blended with water and protein powder. It's cold, wet and yummy!:)

It's due to the elevated level of free fatty acids in the blood, they supress our appetite. I remember after long runs I was only hungry in the evening. After marathons only just the day after! Mari

Marcia...congrats on the 8 miles!!! Maybe some oatmeal before the run??? I do that before my long runs. And after I normally have a protein fruit smoothie...protein is good for muscle recovery. Good luck in the half and let us know how it goes...:)...Carole

Congrats on the eight miles, Marcia!! Way to go!! Isn't it fun to think, I can do this (I think! I hope!) and then see, I DID IT!!! Be proud of yourself.

I think it's normal to not be hungry after a run- I always took an ice bath after I got back, then a shower, then thought about food slowly.

I think as long as you drink something with carbs/protein in it, you'll be okay. It's easier to drink than eat, I think. Look for powders called "recovery" drinks.

HAVE FUN training!!!! Congrats again.
