Hi, Guys!
My name is Maribeth and I'm new to this board. I'm a full time health and fitness professional (physical therapist, clinical exercise physiologist, athletic trainer, certified personal trainer and GFI) and a regular poster to a couple of other fitness boards.

Look forward to posting here and becoming part of the Cathe family!

Hi Maribeth!

Welcome to the board!! Hmm .. you may have just put yourself in the line of fire with all of your credentials :) I would personally love to chat with you via email with a couple of questions/concerns. If you get a moment and could answer a couple of questions for me that would be great! My email is:
[email protected]

Thanks!!

Welcome Maribeth! I recognize your name but can't remember on which forum it was that I saw your name. This is off the cuff but after reading what you do for a living maybe you can help me with my shoulder tenditis (sp?) that I've had for quite some time. Its been getting worse lately since I've been strength training my upper body 3 times a week. What do you recommend I do to get rid of it? There's a definite click sound in there. I've tried icing it and my doctor put me on Celebrex for a short time and I did some exercises but I still suffer from it. I'm sorry for bothering you but I was curious as to what you would recommend. Thanks so much for your help and again welcome aboard! You'll love these forums! Kathy

Hey, Kathy,
Tell me what exercises you are doing. Are you doing any stretching also? Where are you having pain? Does it hurt just with activity or does it also hurt even when you aren't using it?

Sorry for all the questions but they will help me to help you!
:)!

Hi to all my fellow TBB and PFP posters that may be here, too!

RE: Hi Maribeth!

Hi, Debbie,
Thanks for the welcome--in response to your statement, I dance every chance I get! Too bad DH doesn't love it like I do.

Hello again Maribeth! Thanks so much for taking the time to help me. I feel the pain on the top and to the left of the shoulder. The pain isn't there when I'm inactive but when I inhale heavily the pain travels up the right side of the neck. Sometimes I have pain that will shoot down the length of my right arm. Its very very tight. I feel pain in the neck when I turn my head to the right. I have to massage it every morning and also sitting at my desk at work. The exercises that I'm doing are from Cathe's tapes. Her Pure Strength series, Cross Train Express series but feel it the most whenever I do Power Hour. I've decided to stop using Power Hour. I must be very conscious when I lift the barbell over my head for doing presses. I can hear a clicking sound. Not good. I'd like to keep weight lifting but I'm afraid if I keep on this way I won't be able to lift at all anymore. The Celebrex works wonders for relieving the pain and tightness; really loosens me up but I can't live on the pills forever. A physiologist had me in a sitting position do shrugs as well as turn my head to the left looking at my left knee. I was supposed to use a tennis ball either pressing it up against the wall or lying on the floor. The wall didn't work because the ball kept slipping. Haven't tried the floor exercise yet. What should I do? Kathy

Kathy, it sounds like you may have more than one thing going on. The pain could be coming from your shoulder, but you may have a neck problem that is causing some, if not all the pain. A problem with neck musculature could also cause altered shoulder mechanics, which may be where the clicking is coming from.

There are some stretches I would suggest you start with. If you'll e-mail me at [email protected], I'll send them to you.

In the meantime, I'd give the overhead exercises a break until the pain gets better.

Take care!
Maribeth

RE: What's a GFI?

Hi Maribeth! I was wondering if you are home exerciser, and if so, who are your favorite instructors??

Thanks,

Stacy

Welcome! I had no idea what GFI was until Debbie's post...and I was one for a short while!

RE: What's a GFI?

You are right--GFI is group fitness instructor. And, yes, I am a home exerciser. I love Cathe videos (of course), Gin Miller videos, and think The Firm was a pioneer in the aerobics with weights arena.

I also have a Stairmaster, a step and a wide array of free weights and resistance bands and tubes at home plus an extensive video collection. But I do go to the gym most every day, at least for now. I tend to alternate between the extremes of being a gym rat and a home body as far as my training routines are concerned. Some days I'm in the mood for the gym setting, others I don't want to be bothered with the drive.

Can't wait to get to know you guys!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-20-02 AT 05:57AM (Est)[p]Wow, what great credentials! I got my ACE PT certification in May, and have begun to teach aerobics to get the experience and will be working with my local Y as a personal trainer. I want to get a niche working with golfers as a next step, so I'm working with my son who is a golf pro and am getting a Golf Conditioning Specialist certification through GMP Fitness.

Glad to have you! I know you're known as being very helpful on the turnstep site, and we'll be coming to you for advice, you can count on it.
