Need tips on keeping a food diary

Hello Educated Crowd,

I hope that everyone is having a wonderful weekend. It is absolutely beautiful in Chicago. :7

I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on keeping a food diary or an example of how to go about doing this.

I'm in good shape but really want to go to the next level. I'm beginning to realize that my food choices are probably keeping me from getting there. Some candy here, bowl of ice cream there, etc... and my new job is difficult because people I work with are great, but they are "sabotagers"...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to hear if keeping a food diary really did wonders for anyone. i love those inspiring stories!!!!

Thanks everyone. Keep up the hard work

Write down EVERYTHING you eat for about a week, and that includes cleaning up the kid's leftovers at McDonalds. Every forkful, every taste.

Then add it up...you'll be shocked and amazed.

As for the folks at work, have your own stockpile of good stuff, and DON'T give in to their goodies. You signed no agreement when you hired in to eat the stuff your co-workers bring in, right?

Hi there,

The food journal has been my salvation. I've been keeping one for over a year and it helped me to lose 30 of the 50 pounds that I've lost. It has kept me from rebounding thus far. I intend to keep using it indefinitely.

It doesn't matter so much whether you count calories, count WW points, do Zone portions, or count fat grams, the point is that you write down everything that you eat so that you stay real. Denial was the way that I gained weight, this daily reality check was what helped me get rid of it.

I've found other uses for my journal. I keep track of anything that I'm trying to focus upon.

Good luck!
Angelica :)

Hi All,

Thank you so much for the tips! Okay, I'm going to do this. I actually started today and I was really thinking twice about the snacking. I think that just the awareness of the whole process is a very good thing.
I really appreciate how supportive everyone is on the forums! Thanks everyone! ;-)
