Need a career change. Question for nurses

I'm at the top of my pay scale as a bookkeeper and keep hearing about the nursing shortage so I thought about looking into becoming a nurse. I have a BA, but I think the college is not accredited and I do not want to go back to school for 4 years. Can I become a nurse in less time? What is the difference between an RN, LVN? A friend of mine says that I wouldn't be able to do alot of nursing stuff because I am so small and can't lift a person, but there are other things you do besides lifting people right? I'd love to hear your comments.

Thanks,
Beth

Well...I have been an RN for 34 years. Yes, you can become a nurse in less than four years. Try your two year collage programs. Depending on what part of the country you apply, you could get in, in a reasonable period of time. There are prerequisites. The difference between an RN and an LVN, to me are BIG. An RN makes much more salary than an LVN, plus can make nursing diagnosis, plan care, and have much more of an ability to define nursing care. An LVN must work under the supervision of the RN. In SO. Cal. a nurse with 20 years+ experience will me making a full time salary of 60+ with benefits. It can be hard work, but you will NEVER be out of demand! LIdochick

Hey Beth..

Not all nurses are huge horsey people!LOL!! I am very small as well, so thank goodness for those lifts. I do have my fair amount of strength though, so I do not worry. It is ergonomics that you really have to worry about, and even then, you may still break your back!:)

I have applied for a two year program here in Arizona, you can look into that. It would give you an associates degree in nursing. There may be a way that you could just as quickly get your BSN though, since you already have a bachelors. Don't know much about that. Maybe others can give you more advice. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do. There is lots of info on the net. You can go to www.allnurses.com and brouse the forums there for advice. That is what I did.
