Mystic Tan Experience

I did it! I got my babysitter to come over and headed out to the salon that offers MT. Over the course of the last couple of weeks, I've done a lot of online reading about MT, other people's experiences and also called the salon to ask some questions. (That last sentence is important.) I was told not to use any lotions, deodorant or make-up (this makes sense). Once I got there the person at the counter told me, here's the stuff you need to use in the shower before you come (HUH???) and then you're all set. Oh and these three tubes (exfoliant, primer, self-tanner---may have mixed the names up....three tubes of some stuff) cost $15/each. I just stared at the girl....WHAT? You want me to buy $45 worth of product for one $25 MT session? Uh-- no. Is there a sample pack or something of the like? Oh, sure...here's this smaller set of all three tubes for only $18. Huh? Let me explain my irritation...first, after four different phone calls not one person said anything about getting something prior to the experience. Nor did they say anything about $45 in product. I then went on to explain the effort of getting a sitter and the cost involved in that alone. She was young, no kids, so she didn't get it (not a slam to those without kids...I didn't get it either until I had to find sitters and juggle all of that). However, she was accomodating (I wasn't rude just firm and irritated). I refused the products, since I had exfoliated quite well at home, realizing this need from using self-tanners in the past.

I paid and then watched a very short video (2 min.) on the MT process. I then went back where a girl reiterated the prep steps (I appreciated that since she uses the system she had some great pointers). I put on the barrier cream in all of the appropriate places (she recommended elbows and knees too) and stepped into the strange booth. Standing on the silver disk, I pushed the green button and prepared to get blasted! It wasn't as cold as I expected nor was the spray as "jet like" as I expected. However, I did find myself scrunching my eyes shut (which I only realized after I got out and looked in the mirror...oh well, I can fix that with make-up if need be). All in all, a great experience...well, the MT itself. I do smell today, even after showering last night so that's a disappointment. My face didn't end up having funny marks and I think because I did wipe it quickly when I saw my mistake.

As for the color....FANTASTIC!!! I am definitely a shade darker. Actually, I look like I usually look at the end of the summer (I don't allow myself to get very dark anymore--just whatever I pick up from being outside). It's terribly tempting to keep this up, although it can get expensive....it's better than skin cancer.

There's my experience. Hope that helps someone that may be thinking of using MT.

Well Sue, I am so glad it turned out good for you anyway. I am going in soon to be sprayed, it cost $20 dollars, and she will hand spray me, I liked the way hers looked, and I asked her about it, and she let me know she hand sprays it because the shower thing doesn't always get it even. So I am looking forward to that.

Sue-
I'm a big fan of MysticTan, too, but I can't believe they told you that you needed to buy those products. As long as you exfoliate in the shower that day(a loofah works fine) and use lotion on your body to even out any uneven dry spots you'll be fine (the same if you used any self-tanning cream yourself).

I'm not sure what to do about the smell- it's pretty strong, but I found the spray actually made my skin feel really soft and it was nice not to have any tan lines. Any uneven marks or spots you missed with the barrier cream can be removed or evened out w/an alcohol swab.

Glad you liked it- the shower is an unusual experience!

Me either concerning the products. I lost a bit of respect for their establishment as a result.

Have you done the whole pool thing after MT? How badly did it fade? I'm just curious about this particular point...if it doesn't fade too badly (bad?) then I just may keep it up through the summer.

TIA

PS. Ditto on the no tan line issue!

Thanks for the report. I've been seriously considering this tanning method ever since it came out, but I've never done it. Do you put anything on your head before you get sprayed? Does it spray you from both sides at once or do you have to turn halfway through (remember the Friends episode where Ross did MT? LOL!!!)?

Yes, you put on a shower cap type thing...pull it back from the hairline so that you don't have a noticeable line (and allow your ears to show).

You have to turn around but it stops and gives you something like 10 sec. (can't remember but it's enough time).

The chic also told me to put barrier cream under fingernails (I think the video did too), around cuticles and to bend your toes and fingers and get cream into/on the knuckles/bone. I also put cream on the soles of my feet...video says don't but the chic said it didn't matter. Seemed to give a more natural appearance.

Sue,
if I remebember correctly, they said chlorine would remove ALL the tan which would be the down side for the summer. They have a website that should answer that question since I'm not absolutely sure.

Angela, it really is a good alternative to tanning and its more even than me putting it on myself. You stand there and then turn around for the second spray- hold yourself in an unusual position to make sure you get different angles of your body as opposed to arms by your side. Don't hesitate to go heavy on the barrier cream on hands, in between fingers, toes, heals, etc. so you don't have any weird marks and remove all jewelry.

You would think I have a franchise- I'm just painfully pale in the off-summer months! I found it a really good alternative to real sun and if I did get a natural tan it was a great enhancement.

Hope this helps!

That's what I read too...I was hoping it wasn't quite ALL that chlorine would remove. Then it would be a SUPERB alternative in the summer. I'm still super thrilled with the coloring.

Oh, thank you for writing about this! I've been considering trying this since last summer and never heard a first-hand account from anyone. (of course, I DID see the infamous Friends scene LOL)
I think I want to try this, sans the products they push!
Karen :)

One more question...are there degrees of darkness or is it a "one shade fits all" kind of thing? I guess if a person wanted to be darker, they could go back more often for touch ups. ??

When the girl was setting the booth for me, the other chic told her "level one". That leads me to think there is more than one level. I'm glad I did level one because I'm fair (not white-white, but fair with blue eyes) and it looks more natural. I look like I've spent the few weeks of warm weather outside.

PS. Call and ask them. When I was doing my online research, I read where you could do a second coating in one session for only $10 more.
