muscle sorness in back

I have always continued to workout when I've experienced some muscle soreness, however, I've been doing a lot of shoveling, at least twice a day, plus last night doing PLB for the first time, hurrying to get my barbell lifted, my back hurts today. I don’t want to make it worse, but I was planning on working out again tonight. What are your thoughts?

Do anything but back. This includes anything with dead lifts. If I were you, I'd probably do cardio.

I'm with mogambo. Switch to cardio. You might want to do some yoga moves for the back too. When my back or any other body part is tight, stretching -- very gently -- always helps. If you don't have yoga videos, try Cathe's cool down stretches. Those in the Intensity and new BB series are great.

I wouldn't work my back, and I would consider low-impact for cardio to minimize compression. Also, I would stretch the back very thoroughly before and after working out. Ice might not be a bad idea, either. An ounce of prevention....

Hi Susan,

I agree with everyone, but if you're able try doing some lumbar stabilization exercises - pelvic tilt, hamstring streches, arm and leg raises and bridges. I learned all about these exercises last year when I also thought that I couldn't do back workouts because of pain. I am totally pain free today and still do these exercises for a healthy back. I also do yoga for back care as well as stretches and they help a lot in relieving back pain. Above all, listen to your body, rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medications help also. If the pain continues please see your doctor. Hope all this advice helps.

Take care,

Iris

Thank you all soo much for your great and quick advise.

Hi Susan,
I have a lot of back trouble (old back injury) and agree with everyone's advice here. I'd like to add to their advice by recommending Arnica for pain relief and also a bath in epsom salts. Arnica is available in a variety of preparations but my favourite is Arnica oil: I literally wipe the pain away with it. It costs very little and can be found in lots of different places like healthfood stores, chemists and supermarkets. I also highly recommend a bath in epsom salts. See this recent thread at VF for more information:

Hope you feel better soon!

- Lisa :)
