Hello all:
I am a mom of 3 who commutes 3 hours a day to law school. I work out w/videos and dvds in the evenings. I get up around 5:00 to get the kids and myself ready for the day, I leave around 7:00. I need to eat a snack in the morning around 10:00 to keep from passing out from hunger. I have been taking a clif bar to class and it works great. However, I am sooo sick of them, sick of the noise of opening them, sick of the annoyance of trying to eat one while taking notes etc...Anyway, I thought maybe I could make a smoothie or something before I left and just drink it in class. Or maybe mix up one of those protein drinks. The problems are 1.how would I keep a smoothie cold enough not to be yucky (no break in between to go get it out of the fridge or something) 2. are there any protein/nutrition drinks that actually would mix up without clumping in water from the water fountain? I hear they make a little container thing that has a mixing appartis in it but I cannot find one and have concluded they are an urban myth.
Sorry for the rambling. Any input greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Rachel

P.S. Sorry for the redundancy to all who read this at vf. :)

Don't really have any answers for you, just want to offer my support if you ever have any questions about law school or anything. I graduated in 1990, so my experiences may be a little outdated.

I live on bars, so to me they are always the best choice. As a lawyer, I prefer not to break for lunch unless it is unavoidable. I started with Power Bars, then moved on to Luna Bars, but have recently discoverd Myoplex Carb Sense bars and Keto bars, which are great. These high protein bars keep me satisfied for much longer than the sugary bars did.

Good luck with your hectic schedule!

My friend makes fruit smoothies (she uses mostly whole fruit with some fruit juice, no sugar or ice cream fillers) and freezes them in empty water bottles. I think after 3 hours in the car, they may be nearly defrosted. I'm not sure if protein shakes would freeze well. I think whole fruit smoothies are the best any way. Hope this gives you one idea.

Hi! I hope to be in the same boat as you next year--just applied to law school. Will know by April 1 (I hope).

Anyway, try GNC, Vitamin Shoppe or Vitamin World for one of those shaker things. You can put the mix in the water about 10 minutes before you want to shake it, the powder gets looser & easier to mix that way.

Good luck.

Some groceries carry pre-made protein shakes that are kind of like slim fast only not aimed at losing weight. I can't recall the brand I saw. I know Odwalla also makes some really good for you bottled drinks - their wheat grass drink is really good - despite it's nasty green color! :)

Cheaper options - I think you might be able to get away with freezing a smoothie with protein powder in it. just make sure it's completely mixed (I put protein powder, flax seeds, wheat germ, fruit , h2o in mine) before freezing. I've frozen my mixes before - to avoid making them every day, and they turned out all right.

As far as other bar options - I really like Odwalla protein bars. They also make a cranberry bar and a carrot bar that are tasty - but not as much protein.

Good luck!
