Jogging on the Beach

During Spring break in Florida, I tried jogging on the beach and I had a hard time. My lungs filled up like crazy and started hurting and I was coughing up "stuff" while jogging (paints a nice pic don'tcha think?) What the heck happened? I ended up fast walking and cutting my workouts short everyday. I thought my legs would hurt from the sand not my lungs!! BTW I got home back on my treadmill and everything was back to normal. Weird.

I just wanted to know if this happens to anyone else while jogging on the beach?

Do you think it was the thick salty air bothering me?

You probably went from a cold, dry Michigan winter to a hot wet Florida winter, and your lungs did a double take with the humidity. It happens to me when I run on the North Carolina beaches after living in California. Also, jogging on sand is a lot harder than jogging on a treadmill - it could be that you were trying to run as fast and your body did not like that... It does get easier - but you have to do it daily... :)

Where were you? Gulf coast? Do you know if there was any Red Tide? That can really bother people upper respiratory wise. I say Gulf Coast b/c I think of that more over there than in the Atlantic. As I recall, Red Tide is an algae bloom that kills fish.

I would guess it was the humidity. People from dryer climates have no idea how tough humidity is on the breathing and the body.

When I saw your post, I was wondering if you were on the Gulf side or the Atlantic side. Running in that powdery Gulf sand is IMPOSSIBLE. It is like running in quick sand... bad for your knees and hip joints. I love running on the hard packed sand of the Atlantic beaches though! It's a world of difference. (I'm used to the humidity because I run in it every day!)
