It's going to be a long day....

BF is away tonight and I cannot sleep. Argh! I got about three hours of *not so good* sleep and here I sit, surfing the net b/c I was sick of staying in bed and tossing and turning. I hate these sleeplesss nights! x( I had SJP scheduled for the morning (in an hour - ugh!) and I may not even have the energy to get through it, let alone the rest of my day! Sometimes it amazes me that I made it through a year + of his deployment and one night now is a big deal. I guess I just don't like being alone in the house & knowing that I won't be tomorrow keeps me awake tonight. OK, back to bed to try and get some rest, at least :(

Hi Christine,

Sorry to hear about your sleepless night. I don't like to be alone in the house at night either. DH use to to go over the road for work(truck driver), so I feel for you. Hope you were able to get some rest!

Aila:)

Christine-I feel for you! All I can say is hang in there, cuz I am in the same boat as you are.

My BF just returend from a year-long deployment in Cuba for the Army. We don't live together (yet), but he's been staying with me and my kids since his return last month. The nights he stays at his house are TOUGH! Plus, we work together, so it gets me all excited, knowing I will see him early in the AM.

Hang in there.

Christine - when I have a hard time getting to sleep, I play the "name game" in my head. It used to be a drinking game when I played drinking games...but now it helps bore me to sleep and keep my mind from wandering to things that may worry me or otherwise stimulate my mind.

The game is simple, think of someone famous whose first name starts with A, say...Albert Einstein. Then you have to think of someone whose first name starts with E...Edward Norton...and so on.

I'll also sometimes play a game where I have to think of a city for every letter of the alphabet...Amsterdam, Baltimore, Cincinnati...usually I'm asleep before I get to Z. Obviously you can do all sorts of things. Plants for every letter or whatever.

And my old standby when I had a stereo in my bedroom, I'd put Pink Floyd's Animals CD on with the volume really low. I'd always be asleep before "Pigs" came on.

Surfing the net is not a good way to get yourself to sleep. There's too much to hold your interest. Sometimes just changing my location works too. If one of the forementioned games isn't working, I'll move to the couch. I don't know why...but that almost always works.

Awwwwww, poor Christine.

You know, it's kind of funny: I lived alone in an apartment by myself for umpteen years with no problem, but now that I'm married, I find it hard to fall asleep at night without DH when he's away on business! I keep checking the door and the windows, and listen for sounds. It's silly, but I just feel ill at ease when he's not around.

This day will be over before you know it, so hang in there!

Candi, I'm totally with you on the occasional-use-of-drugs thing. I took an Actifed last night and it knocked me right out. Actifed contains sudafed (pseudoephedrine) and an antihistimine called triprolidine. What does Benedryl contain? Sudafed is very potent stuff and I don't like to take it too often.

As a frequent insomniac, I can feel your pain. Better than Benadryl or Sudafed (don't take what you don't need) --- get your doctor to prescribe you some Ambien. It's actually intended for sleep, rather than using a sinus medication, which is risky. It knocks you right out, you sleep beautifully for 7-8 hours and you wake right up (almost as if an alarm went off, you just wake up). NO side effects, like dizziness or headache or grogginess the next day. Just a great night's sleep. It's the best and I highly recommend it!!

Well, see, you can get dependent on Ambien, but not Benedryl. Also, there are no withdrawal symptoms when using Benedryl. Why take a medication that's going to mess with your brain chemistry when you can take an antihistamine? Especially when it's only for occasional sleeplessness. Unless, however, you have hypertension or thyroid issues.

Nancy,

Benadryl only contains an antihistamine, no decongestant. Actually, a decongestant will counter the effects of the antihistamine. Benadryl has been around for 50 years or more and is still the most effective antihistamine there is. When I was rushed to the hospital about seven years ago for a severe allergic reaction, that's what they gave me.

I may have a sleepless night or two a month and this is what works for me. I have used Benedryl for allergies and asthma since I was a child so I guess that's another reason I feel comfortable with it.

Haydee,

This is a very good suggestion. Reading is very relaxing. I won't read in bed if DH is home, though because it would disturb him. But if I was alone, I might try reading also. It could be the Bible, or a magazine or a good novel.

Christine,

I am the same way when my DH is gone. I hate it! He was gone a couple weeks ago for 4 days and I thought I would go crazy. I would call him when I got in bed to say goodnight every night he was gone. He just told me last night that he might have to go again and this time it will be for two weeks. I have no idea what I will do then. Go out of my mind for sure!!!
