Increased Muscle, Increased Calorie Burning Question

Hi to the educated crowd:

Here's a question that just popped into my head yesterday and was wondering if anybody had an answer for it.

Its been proven that increased muscle mass leads to overall calorie burning when muscles are at rest, right?

However, my question is, does increased muscle mass lead to overall increased calorie burning when muscles are at WORK as well?

For example, if I were to be doing a high intensity cardio workout (ie IMAX, or running) would I burn more calories if I had more muscle mass, than somebody who didn't have as much muscle?

If anybody has any info or ideas, I would much appreciate it.

Thanks, Lynn

RE: Increased Muscle, Increased Calorie Burning Ques...

Quick response without any backing behind it I think the answer is YES!! Muscle burns more calories so I think a muscular person would burn more calories doing the same activity as a less muscular person, in my opinion.

I could be dead wrong but it makes sense to me.

Hope that helps some:)

RE: Increased Muscle, Increased Calorie Burning Ques...

Yes! Think of each new muscle cell as a little engine burning up more calories no matter what you are doing.

So, if you have 2 people at the same weight but different % of lean body mass, the one with the higher muscle mass would burn more calories. Fat is not as metabolically active-just a nice storage site for all those unburned extra calories!!!

Hope this helps,
