Hey ya'll! Just wanted to know if anyone has any ideas on how to get better faster! I have a cold (very stuffy nose, especailly at night and throat hurts so badly!) and I can't sleep at night cause I can't breath.

I've missed three workout days cause i"m so tired!! Anyone have any suggestions on how to get better faster?! Thanks everyone!!

LOL...me too Amber! It's all good though, I just can't stand not exercising. Somebody might know something! Thanks though darlin'!

Ziacam works , but you have to start taking it when the symptoms first start. I do think extra vitamin C (1000mg a day) and OJ lessons the length of symptoms ...

I hate missing workouts too, so I know how you feel!

Well, this will not help you get better sooner, but if you have a really sore throat, consider putting a humidifier in your bed room. I had an awful cold last year and my throat was so sore that breathing was agonizing. The humidifier really helped - if you can get one that has the Vicks mist - even better. For breathing, if it gets really awful for me, I usually resort to Vicks nose spray, but only a tiny bit and I don't breath it up because then it just goes down the back of your throat and makes it even more sore. There are menthol scented Puffs tissues out there there are really good for opening up the "nose". I think they are Vicks too - I'm starting to sound like a pitchman for that company! Being sick sucks!!! :(

P.s. Zicam was recently discovered to be the cause of several people losing their sense of smell. I was under the impression that they were pulling it from the shelves, but I haven't looked to see if they are still selling it or not. I wouldn't recommend that stuff. Here's the article:

FDA Warns Consumers to Discontinue Use of Zicam

June 16, 2009—The FDA advised consumers to discontinue use of several Zicam Cold Remedy products due to the risk of anosmia, a potentially permanent loss of smell.
Matrixx Initiatives, the manufacturer of Zicam, settled approximately 340 cases in January 2006 involving people who alleged anosmia following use of Zicam. The FDA indicated it had received complaints from 130 consumers dating back to 1999.
The FDA issued a warning letter stating the products no longer can be marketed without FDA approval. Matrixx Initiatives previously took the position that Zicam was a homeopathic drug not subject to FDA regulation.

haha amber.. you sold me! LOL thanks you two for in the advice. After work today, I shall buy what you've recommended. Hopefully it works! Thanks to you Chris! I hope something works though, I might be past the "beginning" point, I've been like this for 3 days, arrrrgh! But I'm desperate! lol!

steam showers, vicks vapor rub...And, if you have snot that moves, you can use the neti pot!!! I swear by mine, they really help.

I hope you feel better soon!!!! ((((((hugs))))))))

I never used the nose Ziacam, that's only for the nose swabs.

The Melt Aways you take every 3 hours (orally) until symptoms subside work great. And I do believe they are just a combination of zinc/vitamin c and another supplement.

I heard about zicam and the nasal swabs! I forgot till you metnioned it! But Chris, good idea, the melt aways would be safer I think. I find regular steam shower make me more stuffy, but i'll try it with the vicks stuff. And thanks for the HUGS JENNI! Ya'll rock!

Sleep, sleep and sleep some more, do not expect much from yourself, do not exercise, take the break your body is demanding from you and drink loads of juice, hot tea, indulge in those feel good drinks and meals and recharge your body's batteries.

Feed a cold, starve a fever, as my mother always said. Now is not the time for thinking "eat clean only, only 20 egg whites per day, no fat grams at all." Build up your immune system, don't break it down. Vitamin rich food is what you need.

I guess I'm just weird but if Ihave a cold and try to work or do some light activity, I temporarily feel better. As soon as I stop, I start feeling bad again. I think it is the heat that makes me feel better...kind of like "sweating out" a cold.

If you tough it out and exercise while you have a cold, you'll feel better in about a week. But if you rest and skip the workouts, you'll feel better in about seven days.;)

Sleep, neti-pot, vaporizer, emergen-C, spicy Thai food

breathe-right strip, elevate the head of your bed a bit

Well I resort to the old wives tale of homemade chicken noodle soup (but I add carrots for extra "C") and that really will help with the stuffy nose for a while. (Came back to add that if I feel really stuffy sometimes I add cayenne pepper or ancho chili pepper to make my nose drain even more)

Then I load up on lots of clothing (to stay warm and sweat) and sleep/lounge for a couple days.

I have been lucky and haven't had a cold "stick" for more than a day or two for years. Even when people around me have been down for a week or more.

Hope you get better soon !

For a stuffy head fill the bathroom sink with hot steamy water, place a towel over your head and breathe in the hot steam, this will loosen any mucus in your head and help drain it. I hope you feel better.

Also, hot peppermint tea helped me.
