I'm ready to start the fight Help me Cathe!

HELP. I'm a 45 year old female currently weighing 185 pounds and body fat at 30%. I feel disgusting, depressed, aweful. I'm so embarressed when I go out with my husband junior to me. I LOVE working out, infact I can live in a gym all day, but there are bills to paid and not enough time in my schedule. Not to mention there are days I drag my feet due to my tyroid. About 6 years ago I was dedicated to the gym and jogging (15+years), i did allot of 10k's,ran 4 miles fives days a week and the 6th day I ran 7 miles, I was in the gym 5 days a week at 5:30am no excuses. Due to my weight now I can harley run 2-3miles a day. I do run on my threadmill 2 miles then I do step aerobics, then weights. Still no results, darn fat won't go away, I cry to myself, I feel it's not fair. Now i'm mad and ready to fight back, i'm not ready to feel 45 or look it. Help Cathe! My question is can anyone help me put together a 6 day workout plan with Cathe's dvds to loose 50 pounds and 30% body fat. I love to have a goal of 6 months, maybe thats pushing it, but I can dedicate 2hours every morning 6 days a week. My goal in my life is to run at lease one marathon and get back to running 10k's oh not to mention a body like cathe's. I'm tried of doctors telling me be happy with my weight, here take more anti-depressants. Once I can start down sizing my weight it will be easier to run. I just can't get pass that point no matter what I do; Grrrrrr i'm soooo fraustrated. Cathe if you can help me with a program I will take that challenge and up date you with my progress.

Thank you
Kimmy

Hi Kimmy,

I wanted to give you some support and offer my perspective on nutrition/health and some suggestions that may help you in your struggle to lose and then maintain a comfortable weight for your height and age.

I'm going to touch on a few other things besides exercise since you mentioned depression and feelings of frustration etc.

I would take some time and write down some small goals. Take it 10 lbs at a time. You mentioned you were 45 and our metabolism is a bear to conquer once were in our late 30's. (for some of us) It's not impossible of course, just that darn metabolism likes to slow down a bit. You also mentioned something about a Thyroid which of course I can only assume your working with a medical Dr. to regulate.

So, knowing the barriers and then keeping the mind set that you have a few hurdles to jump, taking small goals and really setting your mind towards taking things one day at a time may help you mentally prepare for your "fight".

Our bodies are wonderful, amazing, and beautiful instruments that really respond quicker to consistent training then we think. I firmly believe its our mental state that fouls us up. It's very difficult to stay consistent with nutrition and a work out plan because life gets in the way...work, kids, partners, PMS etc. etc. Not to mention the fact that most of us are grasping at straws trying to figure out which " diet of the month" is going to get the weight off or those dreaded last 10 pounds (which are the hardest!!)

What I'm trying to say is, first of all...Don't be so hard on yourself try very very hard to not think of yourself as disgusting or embarrassed of who you are ....We all have that critical voice inside our heads but you do have a choice to believe the voice or believe in "yourself" your positive self. Just remember that beauty comes from within and anyone who has worked out hard enough and long enough knows we women keep on keepen on because the exercise keeps us balanced mentally and physically, keeps us strong and confident, keeps us centered and alive, makes us better mothers, daughters, sisters and better friends. At the end of the day, no one cares if we can fit in that size 6 jeans. (Except our critical voice of course!) LOL

So, you make a plan, get back to basics, do as much cardio as you can at least 6 days a week and of course do some strength training 2-3 times a week and on your off days, try some stretching, some pilates or simple yoga. BALANCE is the key. If your eating clean most of the time and be honest with yourself on the eating clean part...I bet you will at the very least, feel better about yourself and the lbs should slowly but surely disappear.

I guess this is intended as more of a pep talk my friend. Good luck to you and just remember that if it was easy....everyone would be slim, fit and at a perfect weight. It is hard work and hard dedication but you can get back on track, just pull yourself up by the boot straps and go for it.

Thank you for the reply, your right. I expect way too much out of myself, rather than taking baby steps. I really don't care about the weight as much as I do the body fat. My thyroid causes an increase in my body fat. If I weighed 150 pounds but had 19% body fat i'd very happy. It's all about health, not looking slim (don't get me wrong slim is good). I printed your advise so I can read daily and remind myself it's okay...baby steps.

I'm very excited and can't wait to purchase some of Cathe's DVD's to start a serious training program. I'm a creature of habit so dedication comes easy to me, not to mention the fact I love working out, some days I just want to run forever, but my asthma won't allow it; only if I run slow and long.

I can't wait to here from Cathe.

Your very welcome. I understand, my reply is just as much a reminder to me as it was to encourage you to keep it all in perspective! I think I was trying to encourage myself also!!

Cathe's DVS's are wonderful!! I have almost all of them except the older ones.

I really like Imax II and Imax III and Step Blast and Legs and Glutes. (love them all really..!) anyway, I'll get off the ask Cathe section now and again, good luck.

One more thing..I'm a runner also and like they say, there is no high like a runners high. Once you get to your 2nd or 3rd mile...nothing hurts anymore, your breathing regulates and then comes the serenity. Very very cool.

Hi Kimmy,

I'd be more then happy to help you with a program of Cathe DVDs but if you have a thyroid problem, it can really be tough to combat if your not taking any meds for it. As I know women who could exercise all day long and not lose an ounce because of their thyriod. Which I know really frustrates them. But I'd seriously fire your doctor, you hired them you paid them, you can fire them. And the treatment they are giving you is horrible. There are a lot of different thyroid drugs on the market, and anti-depressants are known to keep the weight on or make your gain more. So to me the doctor isn't helping you, they are hurting you. So go find one who is actually interested in doing their job, or if you’re up to it, try a natural pathologist. Which deals in alterative medicine, it's a bit slower, but slow is better then nothing, and they maybe able to get you off the anti-depressants, and that may be the key right their for you to lose weight. But never let a doctor blow off your problem, there are always treatments to try, or diets, and a doctor should never give up on a person and tell them that they will never get better, as they don't know. There are always new drugs coming out, new treatments and new diets. All is needed is a willing patient, and the time of finding the right combination.

I'd be more then happy to help where I can, but you really need a doctor who cares so you can get off those anti-depressants, and on something for your thyroid.

I'm not Kimmy but wanted to thank you for this post. Since February 14th I've been going through the toughest time in my life and have stopped exercising and gained about 20 lbs. With the weight gain I again feel disgusting and embarrassed. Prior to February I worked out with Cathe 6 days a week and was seeing real progress. Your post has just encouraged me tremendously. Thank you SO much!

You may "feel disgusting, depressed, awful", and you may be depressed, but you are NOT disgusting or awful! Now those doctors who are telling you to "be happy with (your) weight, here take more anti-depressants", they are disgusting and awful...alright their medicine is, not them. Anyway I second the advice to find some new medical advicers and fast. I have (always will now) hypothyroidism and before it was diagnosed and treated, I felt like I was twice my age (about yours at the time)! Then my heart started acting up!!! That's when I got it all checked out. Now I'm taking something to correct it, have been back to working out (MY doctor told me we don't have to get old, she got me back on track:)), learning to eat properly (at my age:)). I've lost close to 60#, am wearing smaller clothes than I have in 20 years, and all the stuff that I can't really change about being 52 (okay, I can do something about the gray) don't faze me.

Kimmy, (I also have asthma, mild, hopefully yours is no worse), you can certainly get back in good condition. Now I won't promise you that you'll be able to run those 10k's, but you can do something with your situation.

I have Cathe's Intensities, Body Blasts, and a couple vhs tapes, Power Hour and Rhythmic Step. I really like, no, I love them all. I do have other workouts by other instructors which are also great.

Start gently, don't do too much and hurt yourself. Build up in time and intensity. You might want to start with Cathe's Basic Step and Body Fusion dvd; Cathe designed these for beginners, but they also give you a great intro to her and her style. Then on to High Step Circuit-Beginner/Intermediate dvd. Other posters may have suggested these (and I apologize for echoing your replies).

Read and study all you can about healthy, clean eating. That's the best diet. And watch not only what you eat, but how much (and you probably already know all this!).

Keep us posted on how you're doing...best of luck, Kimmy!

Thank you Lydia, I am currently taking meds for my thyroid and i do takes puffs before excerising, but I can't let these issues get in my way, I have to learn to work with them. This board has been soooo informative and the support that comes from everyone it's nice to hear from real people with real issues. I love all the information i'm absorbing in, and reading on other people issues. I'm a good eater, although I can clean it up some more. Not to mention the rotation dvds thats so great, i'm so glad I found this site.
