Ideas Please for San Diego vacation

A friend of mine will be in the San Diego/La Jolla area this week with her family (DH and children 18 and 25). They are staying in La Jolla, but will be there a week so will be going into San Diego also. She wanted some ideas on non-touristy places to go, things to do. Great places that locals know about.

TIA,
Gin:)

I know there are quite a few from SD that will reply and I haven't been there in years, but a few things that I like for the older crowd barring the zoo, Legoland and Sea World would be Downtown San Diego and Coronado. Both fun places just to wander around with good eats and shopping places.

La Jolla is a great small time beach town! Good choice of places to stay.

Hi Gin,

Downtown La Jolla itself is a fun place to visit and walk around, esp. at night. Like Jacque said, the Gaslamp area in Downtown San Diego itself also has great restaurants, as does Old Town, which is where you can get really good Mexican food and fun souvenirs. Do they like seafood? Point Loma Seafood is one of the best seafood restaurants in town.

I think that a trip to the Zoo might be fun, even for a family with adult children. I'd recommend the Zoo over somewhere like Sea World, which is still pretty neat, but more geared towards younger children.

Do they like to be active? If so, there are a lot of great hiking trails (Torrey Pines State Preserve is next to La Jolla, and has some great trails that overlook the ocean), and Mission Bay is a great place to do water sports (kayaking, etc.).

I'm sure others will chime in, but hope this helps for your friends a bit!:)

Isn't that where Ghirardeli's chocolate factory is? I know some who have taken a tour of the factory and enjoyed it... of course they were all women and went mostly for the chocolate. :9

Hi Carol,

No, very sadly (or, maybe it's a very good thing!;-) ) the factory isn't located in San Diego; I think that the actual factory is up in San Francisco. There is, though, a Ghirardeli's restaurant and ice cream parlor in the Gaslamp area . . . .}(

These are the places I like: Seaport Village downtown on the water, Birch Aquarium in La Jolla, There is the Las Americas Outlet mall down off the last US exit before you get to Mexico.

Gin,

I would warn them that the US Open is going on this week up in Torrey Pines Golf Course. I would tell them to stay far away from that area.

I already see you received several ideas of activities to do in the area.
Hope they all have a great time.

Thank you all for the great suggestions. I will pass them on to my friends.

Lorrayne,
Actually, the reason they are going to be there is for the US Open.

Thanks!
Gin:)

There's also the Midway museum down at the waterfront near Seaport Village. Balboa Park (near the Zoo) is also quite beautiful.

OK - going to the open? Now I'm jealous.

And yes, Ghirardelli Square is in SF. That's a great place to kick around too. We go there quite often for our anniversary weekend.

Hi Gin,

Well, I'm sure they will have a great time at the Open. My old next door neighbor is volunteering during the game. He gets to wear a uniform this entire week and gets to interact with all the golfers. I'm having dinner with him this evening to get the scoop!

Yes, the Midway would be a great tour to take. It was really interesting to walk on the ship and see the aircraft up close.

Hope your friends have a good time.

Does anyone know if El Indio Mexican restaurant is still alive and kicking? When I was stationed at Naval Training Center our office always grabbed great food from there. Ummmm.
