I need your fashion opinion

I went to the mall yesterday and was looking at the new fall clothes. I saw some pretty cashmere sweaters. One style was a short-sleeve turtleneck. I think I like it but was wondering what the rest of you think. Do you think a short-sleeve turtleneck sweater is weird looking? Even the saleslady there said she doesn't like them, to her, a turtleneck should have long-sleeves. Just need some advice since the only other opinion I can get is from my husband, who's general response is "it's fine".

Thanks,
Melissa

I've seen lots of short-sleeved turtlenecks and think they look fine. They're good because you can layer a cardigan or jacket over them and you won't get really hot, as you might with a long-sleeved sweater. It might look weird if it was a big chunky knit, but would be very nice with a finer knit like cashmere:)

Do you mean short sleeves, or sleeveless?

I don't think I've ever seen one with short sleeves, but in the fall when it's a bit cooler, I often wear a black mock turtleneck that is sleeveless.

I have a couple of these and I like them a lot! I don't really like a turtle neck b/c of the neckline and the amount of heat that they generate but the short sleeves make it less hot and somewhat tolerable for me :)

Melissa, I think a short sleeve tutleneck sounds pretty. Like Shelley said you can wear blazers and cardigans over it, if you like.

In my opinion turtlenecks or any high-neck tops look best on people with small boobs. If you have big boobs and wear high neck tops, all you see are boobs and a chin. It's not flattering, and can make a person look heavy, even though she's not. I have a C-D cup so I prefer scoop necks and V-necks.

I can see the point of them if you're going to wear something over them to hide the "short sleeves factor". I kinda think it would look weird just by itself, sort of like a short sleeved jacket. What's the point really? If it's meant to keep you warm then it should be long sleeved don't you think?
Just my 2 cents!

I think it would look great with a nice, tailored jacket over it. If the colors are plain I would also add a nice necklace.

I'm not crazy about short sleeved turtlenecks either.

Lori, I agree with you! (I'm a C cup)

I like the short sleeve turtle necks - they give you a lot of options. What I would be leery about is a cashmere one, though - I'm sensitive to any wool, even cashmere. I'd end up scratching the crap out of my neck by the end of the day.

I logged on at lunch to see if I got any responses. I didn't expect so many. Thanks!

Hmmm. So some of you think short-sleeve turtlenecks are fine and others don't like them. That doesn't help me decide! x( ;-)

Well, as Lori pointed out, they look better on people with small boobs. Unfortunately, that's me! So maybe I'll get one and see how I like it. Hopefully it won't be itchy around the neck. I have a few other cashmeres, not turtlenecks, and they don't seem to bother me. Angora does though - I won't buy anything with angora in it.

Thank you all for your advice! And if anyone else has anymore input, I'm all ears. I wonder what the "What Not to Wear" girls have to say about short-sleeve turtlenecks...

I went to a short fashion show at Neiman Marcus and the model was wearing a 3/4 length sleeve sweater with a long sleeve blouse underneath it - he said that was a big thing this year wearing longer sleeves underneath shorter sleeved jackets and sweaters.
And of course it looked great on the model!!!

If you like it - go for it!!!

Melissa, the WNTW girls say the same thing I did about turtlenecks.

If you have a flat chest, and a normal to long neck--go ahead and wear the turtlenecks. That would be a flattering look for you. If you have a short neck--do not wear tutlenecks, it's not flattering.
You said you didn't have much in the boob department, so crewnecks, halternecks, bateu necks all look great on you. Sometimes when someone doesn't have boobs if they wear a deep V or scoopneck, all you see is bony chest. If your skin is nice there, and not bony then they can sometimes work too.

Like I said I have big boobs, so I wear scoops and V-necks. I might layer them over cami's and t-shirts sometimes. But I still have the allusion of the V or the scoop to break up the distance between chin and chest. I will NEVER buy a turtleneck again. :) :)

Lori,

Thanks so much for all that info! I am small up top and have a longer neck, so I'm going for the short-sleeve turtleneck. Lord and Taylor, here I come! And thanks for telling me the other styles that are more suited for my body type. I agree that although I have a few v-necks, they aren't the most flattering on me. So I guess I won't be buying any more of those either. I'll save those for you! I assume that bateu is the same as "boat neck", it just sounds more flattering? It's funny that even my husband always comments how he likes the bateu style on me.

Thanks again,
Melissa
