I do believe that most people are good

I absolutely love this story! Good for Mr. Autrey! He is a true hero!! What's even better is that he seems truly stunned by the attention because he seems to honestly believe that this was the least he could do.

Hero saves teen who fell on NYC subway tracks
Man leaps, pushes teen into trough, allowing train to pass over them

Updated: 10:01 a.m. PT Jan 3, 2007
NEW YORK - Wesley Autrey faced a harrowing choice as he tried to rescue a teenager who fell off a platform onto a subway track in front of an approaching train: Struggle to hoist him back up to the platform in time, or take a chance on finding safety under the train.

At first, he tried to pull the young man up, but he was afraid he wouldn’t make it in time and they would both be killed.

“So I just chose to dive on top of him and pin him down,” he said.

Autrey and the teen landed in the drainage trough between the rails Tuesday as a southbound No. 1 train entered the 137th Street/City College station.

The train’s operator saw them on the tracks and applied the emergency brakes.

Two cars passed over the men — with about 2 inches to spare, Autrey said. The troughs are typically about 12 inches deep but can be as shallow as 8 or as deep as 24, New York City Transit officials said.

Relatives identified the teen as Cameron Hollopeter of Littleton, Mass., a student at the New York Film Academy.

Police cited Hollopeter's age to the Associated Press as 19; other news sources gave conflicting numbers.

Hollopeter’s stepmother, Rachel Hollopeter, said Autrey was “an angel.”

“He was so heroic,” she said early Wednesday in a telephone interview. “If he wasn’t there, this would be a whole different call.”

Authorities said Hollopeter had suffered a medical problem, but was in stable condition at a hospital.

Autrey, 50, of Manhattan, declined medical attention.

Autrey had been waiting for a train with his two young daughters. After the train stopped, he heard bystanders scream and yelled out: “We’re OK down here, but I’ve got two daughters up there. Let them know their father’s OK,” The New York Times reported.

While spectators cheered Autrey, hugged him and hailed him as a hero, he didn’t see it that way.

“I don’t feel like I did something spectacular; I just saw someone who needed help,” he told the Times. “I did what I felt was right.”

I think he is amazing too. He showed his two daughters the right thing to do and everyone else. I think this is the type of thing that should be making news everyday, not all the other junk!!!

Hurray and God Bless Wesley Autrey!! :)

That *is* an amazing story! I can only imagine myself freezing up in a situation like that. I don't think I'd be able to think fast enough!

when I saw it on the news, I cried. He told the press that he had to do it, it was the right thing. What got me is that he knew he didn't have enough time to get him and the student out, and he figured out what to do in a very short amount of time. To me, Autrey is an angel sent down from GOD.
Great story.

Truly amazing. This man is a guardian angel. I was so touched, it restored my faith in humanity. A great way to start the new year. He is a hero.

"This man is a guardian angel..."

**I agree!** - and I bet *his* guardian angel is breathing a sigh (or two!)of relief after such a foolhardy and selfless act.

A great story!

However, I do not believe in the overall goodness of people. A few of us, here and there, are truly blessed and good, but overall, humans are selfish species. Throughout our history, we've shown time and again that it is easier to sink to the bottom than it is to rise to the top.

Crikes, too many of us don't even think driving a car is worth getting of the freakin' cell phone!

This guy is definitely amazing. I'm here in NY and if you've ever been in the NYC subways, you know how incredibly shocking what he did actually is. 99% of people would never have done this or attempted it. It's truly amazing. Even more amazing, is his humble attitude about it. He actually went to work afterwards - I would have had to go to a bar!!!

I agree with you Susan, as well. Perhaps I'm cynical, but I've begun to think the human species is devolving. By and large, we're selfish and stupid. It is nice to hear stories like this one, once in a while.
It's nice to know there are a least a few good ones still out there.

I refuse to believe that humans in general are selfish. I've seen too much good in my life to think that way. Oh, we're sometimes thoughless and can be quite rude at times, but I think that's the exception rather than the rule. Okay, so selfless acts like this are not as common, but every day people do little things that bring aid and comfort to so many people. If you do not think so, do yourself a favor and volunteer for something - anything. I know people who go through extrordinary time and training to be able to search for people who get lost in the wilderness and most of them are not only not paid, but have to pay for their training and equipment themselves. I know people who take their well trained dogs around to visit nursing homes, battered women's shelters, children's hospitals, etc so that the people who are there can have a little brightness to their days. I know people who volunteer for organizations like Survivors of Brain Injuries, the American Red Cross, the American Lung Association... to do whatever they can to help a cause. The cause may be near and dear to their hear, but they are volunteering time and energy to it.

Oh, yeah, there are selfish, annoying people all around you - but I think they stick out so much because they are the exception, not the rule. Maybe I'm an optimist and am seeing the world through Rose Colored glasses, but I know too many people who are hereos - who given the situation to act or ignore chose to act (one of my friends saw a small plane crash, stopped his car and pulled the people out of the plane before it exploded - saving their lives - and burning himself in the process - and I know others who have done similar things) that I simply refuse to believe that people are, in general, bad.

I saw the news report on this while at the gym this morning. Simply amazing! This guy left his 2 young daughters up on the platform in order to risk his life to save this guy!!! Apparently the guy had a seizure on the platform which caused him to fall off. He has been offered all kinds of rewards. Donald Trump offered him a good sum of money for what he did! He won't even refer to himself as a hero!
