How much fruit??

I was wondering how much fruit do most of you eat? I eat about 5 servings a day, but was wondering if that is to much because of the sugar content. What are your thoughts?

being a vegan, I probably eat 3-5 servings a day. I don't worry about the sugar content too much, but I forget what a serving actually is. I'm sure someone else here knows. I think if you eat a lot of fruit however, it is better to combine it with some protein to stave of hunger and reduce the GI response.

Pixie, I've read this on the forum a few times, combining protein with fruit. I do eat bananas with PB and apples with BP but have eaten them by themselves also. I didn't know you should combine the protein with the fruit each time. Any other suggestions other than I have above? I will eat grapes, dried plums, raisins, and citrus fruits by themselves.

Being a vegetarian, I eat a lot of fruit too - at least 5 servings a day. (And I eat even more vegetables) I often eat my fruit with something else - like a few almonds, or some PB. But not always. It just depends how I feel - sometimes I don't feel like I need anything more than a piece of fruit, and it will hold me over till my next meal. Other days I'm a little hungrier, so I add a little bit of protein.

I get the majority of my fruits in the morning in my a.m. smoothie. About 4 servings there, combined with a vegan protein/vitamin/mineral/meal replacment powder some soy yogurt or soy milk or fruit juice.

I'd say I usually get 4-5 servings per day. And as others have said, more in termes of veggies.

I eat about 4-5 servings of fruit a day, one with breakfast, morning snack, lunch and afternoon snack(I love fruit). I really watch the serving size of the fruit though due to the fact that several fruits are high in carbs even though they are good carbs. A medium banana has around 24 g of carbs compared to an apple with 14g . I would not be concered with the sugar content unless you are fructose intolerent which causes bloat and gas x( .

I eat about 3-4 servings most days. Some days less, some days none. I usually have fruit after I have my protein shake.

I eat about 5 a day also. It's really hard in the summer for me not to eat more as I love all the summer fruits! I've got blueberries and cherries and strawberries (love those berries)! I don't think 5 is too much if it's balanced and I do try to do that.

Kathyrn-
I assume you are a vegan(if not sorry). If so, I was wondering if you monitor your calcium intake and what you do to ensure you get enough. And I read earlier that you use vegan glucosamine(sp??). Would you mind telling me what brand you use and where you got it?
Thanks, carolyn

I love fruit. I try to eat more vegetables than fruit, but it just doesn't work x( . I probobly have 5 servings of fruits a day, always paired with a protein. I eat high sugar fruits (like bananas) less often than low sugar fruits (like berries).

Hi, Carolyn!
You assume correctly!

For calcium, I keep a store of supplements (a chewable calcium, a powdered calcium, some pills) and if I haven't gotten the daily amount through diet and my enriched soy milk or protein/meal powder, I will take those. I like to vary my calcium sources, because each one has a different mix of things.

As for vegan glucosamine (as well as vegan vitamins, like the above),I get it at www.veganessentials.com (very reasonable shipping charges, unless you buy only a small amount of stuff; and great delivery). I switch off between a powdered glucosamine from Prescription 2000 (that I put in my morning smoothie...Prescription 2000 has several other vegan supplements that VE sells); Mega FLax Joint (a combo flax meal and glucosamine with other added ingredients that are good for the joints) and "Vegan Joint Supreme" from VegLife (also available at VE. It contains not only glucosamine, but MSM, avodado/soy unsaponifiables?, and hyaluronic acid). For tablets, I'll sometimes throw them in with my smoothie so they break down. Again, I like to vary the sources, because in addition to glucosamine, some of them contain other nutrients (like the MSM or hyaluronic acid) that are beneficial.

www.veganstore.com (Pangea) has a line of supplements that is exclusive to them, and they offer some good calcium/magnesium tabs as well as other supplements.

I eat about 3-5 servings, also. I don't worry about the sugar too much, it is natural and there are too many other things in fruit like amino acids, fiber and vitamins to make me worry.

Kathryn-
Thank you for the great advice and websites. I have to tell you that I've learned a lot from your posts. You are a wealth of information!! And by the way, my sister is an aspiring french teacher(she has her master's) who happens to be a vegan(as am I). Thanks again!!

I too eat three to five servings with protein. Luckily I like cottage cheese. I mix it with raisins or a cut up orange which I actually love. Also, I will eat fruit for a carb rather than a slice of bread. Melissa

I average about 3 a day. Some days more and some days less. Sometimes it depends on if there is any in the house to eat. We run out pretty fast here with 3 kids that like fruit. :9

Most of the time I eat two. Usually blueberries or raspberries in my smoothie. Sometimes peaches. Lunchtime I will eat 1/2 of an apple on my salad with vinegar and lemon juice and feta cheese, then mid afternoon the other half. After that no more fruit. Occasionally I eat none.
