How can I set reasonalble goals?

Hi Cathe,

First I want to thank you for being and inspiration. I just wanted your opinion....I lost 100lbs about 2yrs ago. I was obese all of my life and so had alot of excess skin after losing weight despite excercise and weight training. So I had most of the skin removed with plastic surgery, but still wish to look "tighter". From doing your workouts I have seen amazing results. I now have biceps, back muscles, leaner thighs, and a perky behind. I'm 5'6", 143lbs, and about 20% body fat. I have a long way to go,but can looking as fit as you be a reasonable goal for someone like me? Even if you don't respond I just need to thank you so very much for the work that you do, and your inspiration.

Rosa:

Congratulations on taking your health into your hands and turning it around! I disagree with you: you do not still have so far to go. From what I read, you have already covered the greatest distance. Take pride in your considerable accomplishments, you have done great things for your health.

Cathe can be a role model for you, but it is not healthy for any of us to strive to be just like someone else. You want to aim to be the best that you can be, the healthiest, the most cardiovascularly fit, and with good toned muscles. What you can achieve depends on your genetic package, the amount of time you have to work out on a long term fitness program and the depths of your determination.

Few will look like Cathe, but many have her, or another member of her DVD fitness crew, as a role model. You can build the best "Rosa" possible by sticking to sensible goals and guidelines. Aim for 3-4 cardio sessions per week, varying your activities and intensities, and aim for 2-3 weight training workouts per week, alternating between muscle endurance and strength as your focus. Just keep doing it. Do it for life, for your own health, not because you want to look like Cathe eventually. Will wanting to be like Cathe be enough of a motivation to keep you on the fitness road for the rest of your life? It wouldn't work for me, it's not realistic!

But I appreciate the lowered stress, the bigger muscles, the better definition, the improved sleep, higher metabolism, stronger bones, reduced risk of disease, and rosier cheeks I get from working out with Cathe, even though I know I will never look like her. And I set goals like, want to get back into runing, want to run a 5K in the Summer, want to get up to 20 pound dumbells for chest work by the end of the Summer. Short term, well-defined goals that you periodically revise are the ones which will keep you in fitnesss for the long haul.

Welcome and good luck!

Clare

BRAVO! BRAVO! That is two bravos...one for each of you. Rosa, congratulations on your FABULOUS accomplishment. Clare, your "bravo" is for such an AMAZING response.

Welcome Rosa! Clare is spot on about taking pride and focusing on the wonderful things you've already done. If you commit to making this a lifestyle, you will reach heights you never thought you would. With this make you Cathe? No...but very Cathe-like in your focus and determination. Just don't stop...keep going...reach YOUR personal best every single day and those small steps will add up to huge rewards. Set specific goals, reach them. Then keep on setting new ones and reach those. Step by step, level by level, day by day...you can exceed your wildest expectations.

Personally, Cathe's physique inspires me because I, too, have two small boys at home and she has literally opened the door to the possibilities of what CAN happen to MY body with a consistent, tough and complete exercise program (as Clare already mentioned). I LOVE when people approach me to ask "my secret" to getting in shape after two back-to-back pregnancies. Hey, it's no secret...it's CATHE and a healthy diet. Those two things will take you wherever you want to go!

Much gratitude for both your responses. Sometimes I tend to get carried away with how far I think I have to go instead of how far I've come. I've decided to set more reasonable "health-fitness-consistency" goals rather than on how I look. Because it's all about how we feel anyway, not how we look or what age we are, etc, etc,. Thanks for the new inspiration, a better frame of mind, and a breath of fresh air.

Here's to healthy living! :D
