How can I improve "hand" strength?

I often find that when doing strength workouts that it is my hands that limit me from doing more reps or holding more weight. They ache around the fingers and near the "meaty" part of the thumb (when holding heavier weights like 15-20lbs). I use a lifting glove, but that only helps a little. Any suggestions?

Not Cathe here.

I never tried this, but it sounds as if it would be effective. Get a tennis ball. Whenever you are sitting around watching tv or reading the newspaper, squeeze the tennis ball. Alternate hands from time to time.

Whatever you end up doing, be careful when you shake hands with people! There is someone in my town I try to avoid shaking hands with, it can really hurt.

It will be interesting to hear Cathe's reply.

RE: How can I improve

Thanks for the advice! I'll try that. I did Muscle Max today (which I haven't done in a long time...still trying out the new DVD series).
The same thing happened (especially during the chest flys w/15lb dumbells and the 40lb barbell row exercise, though I use two 20lb weights instead-have no barbell). Sometimes I think I can't hold it any longer. Scary. And it's not my arm or chest muscle that's fatiquing, it's my hands. So I tried wrapping a foam pipe insulation pad (you get a the hardware store) around the heavier weights. It helped a little.

Now it's time to get the old tennis ball out and start squeezing! Thanks again.
