Holy cow - Hi/Lo KILLS me!

Hi/Lo kills me! I can do step aerobics and push through without feeling very overexerted. They are challenging, but I can get through them successfully. Hi/Lo makes me feel like I am going to drop! I can push, but not as hard as with other aerobics. I can't last nearly as long as with other aerobics.

Is it just a matter of getting used to hi/lo or is it that I am not pushing hard enough on other aerobics (and therefore not in as good shape as I feel)?

I started my exercise history (about 5 years ago) with hi/lo, then switched to step for home workouts since most of the advanced cardio video's are geared towards step. But lemme tell you, a fast-paced, intense, power-packed hi-lo like Cathe's MIC poops me out faster than many of her step tapes. I think it's because you're moving a lot quicker with hi-lo and are using your own momentum and power instead of momentum off the step. Also, with step, the pace is a tad slower since you have to take the time to step up.

Does what I just said make any sense to you? (Writing clearly and succinctly is a lot harder than it looks!) Anyways, fear not, you are not alone in your belief that hi-lo is a killer.

I think like anything else, when you cross train exercise is more effective. If you did hi-lo with more frequency, I think you would find your body would adapt to the demands, much like it has to step. It sounds like you would benefit from varying your workout; do other things than step. Perhaps if you start with low impact with high intensity and build your way up to higher impact, you will feel more successful. Just a suggestion.:D

me too!

I know what you mean- I always thought I was in good shape, but MIC hi/lo is tough! Usually, I just do the hi/lo and skip the stepping afterwards.
I don't think you're out of shape, you're just not used to hi/lo. Sometimes I'll think of how out of breath I'd get on beginner step tapes when I first started, and now I can't believe it- they're so easy.
So with anything, if you keep doing it, you'll get better. But I don't like hi/lo enough to do it as much as step:)

RE: me too!

I used to teach Hi-Lo before anyone heard of step. Then I thought Hi-lo was easy.

Then everything switched to step and you hardly every heard of a hi-lo class. My body adapted to step and step soon became easy. Yeah, even those turbo-style classes got easy.

Then just this month, we've had a group of ladies join the gym who previously had classes in their church. The leader got cancer and there was no one to continue the program. They all came to our gym looking for hi-lo because that's all you normally get in a church fellowship hall. So, I added 3 hi-lo classes a week to my schedule.

Without a doubt, Hi-Lo is the most cardio-challenging workout I do!!!! I hope it starts to feel easier soon.

RE: me too!

As long as I am not the only one! I think that I need to just keep on pushin' to egt through. I can do that better with step. I mean, I can push it hrough those super duper classes and I have FUN, not suffer! Perhaps I am more confident, I am not sure. Nothing improves it like effort, I suppose!

RE: me too!

I agree that Hi/Lo is a killer...

When I do the hi/lo portion of MIC, it feels like my legs are on fire by the time I'm three quarters of the way through!!! And it's not a fun kind of feeling, like stepping is!! When I'm doing hi/lo I feel like I just want to get the workout over with as quickly as possible cuz it feels like I'm torturing myself, whereas with stepping, it's actually fun cuz youre concentrating on remembering the routines.

MIC is ridiculous to do in its entirety because there's no way you can give the step section your all with your legs feeling like jello after fighting your way through the hi/lo!!!
