To any Catheites in Florida--
Hope all is well with you all.
My parents are in Naples, FL and are as prepared as they can be with their hurricane shutters and all. I'm in Palm Beach and this will probably be the most sleepless nite for me--hubby is working at the Sheriff's dept, so it's just me and my 2 siamese cats--no doubt this will freak them out. I've been thru the Northridge earthquake when I lived in California and knowing that something is about to happen is just as unnerving as not knowing.
They say it will cross the state pretty quickly, but I think we've learned a lesson from all of them, especially Katrina, not to let your guard down and just be as prepared as we can be.
I'll keep you posted on how it all comes out!!

Good luck honey! We had to evacuate for Rita and i sure wish for ALL of us that hurricane season would be over with! I hope you don't lose power of anything and that your dh stays safe. My thoughts are with you:)

Watching the weather channel is not helping, as much as I want the info, and listening to my neighbors putting up their shutters is a little nutsy for me. I just keep thinking that it will lose some speed crossing the state, but then the guy on the weather channel just said that it's one mph less than a category 3. I've been in florida since 1994 and everyone I've talked to said every year we seem to get more hurricanes. I could always move back to MN(where I grew up) and be closer to my brother--that winter though--just kidding!!

Mary..I missed Northridge but I did have a few earthquakes I went thru in Southern Cal before that one...I moved north! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your DH. Earthquakes to me don't compare much to these nasty hurricanes...please keep us posted...:)...Carole
 
I'm in Central FLorida. Got a day off today...YEAH! Not expecting another Charley but it rained buckets all night!

Come back to MN!! I was reading the paper last night and Mille Lacs County is looking for a full time deputy! LOLOL!!!

I lived in Florida for a year and a half and will take the snow and cold over hurricanes and bugs and heat and humidity ANY day of the week!

Hope you are safe. I am watching CNN. This wind blowing down there would scare me to death.I can't imagine. The closest we have ever had was a tornado a few years back. I had just gotten home. The trees were bowing sideways. I am surrounded by trees. This was just 20 minutes of passing through.So my heart goes out to you people going through this.
Here i am complaining because we are down to 48 degrees.Snow is coming.

I have to agree - snow and cold seems very minor compared to hurricanes, fires and earthquakes! I'm going to stop complaining about winter in Ohio.

Hi Mary! Check in with us when you can. You all have had more then your share down south. I guess I need to quit complaining about the weather we are about to start into soon in Ohio. (I hate the cold! Brrrr!) Prayers & thoughts coming your way.

My thoughts are definitely with you. My family and I just flew back to MN this morning from Orlando. We were lucky enough to get an early flight so that we could miss the rath of the hurricane. I was never so happy to be flying through the air. Like you said, just knowing that it is coming and have all that anxiety must be horrible. We were nervous just thinking we were going to have to ride it out. Even though Orlando is north of the eye of the storm they were getting lots of wind and rain when we left. Our plane was just rocking back and forth, DS wasn't too sure about it at the time.

Hang in there and I hope things are clearing up for you by now.

I'm up in NJ and we have been getting pelted with down pours and high winds for hours now!!! This is from Wilma and she's not even close to us yet!!! She's predicted to be coming up the Atlantic coast but supposed to stay out to sea. Even so...if this is what we are getting while she's still down by FLA, I can't imagine what we'll get as she passes right by us! :eek:

I hope every one is FLA is safe and sound. I have family down there myself. I emailed them tonight and am anxiously awaiting answers from them all. As far as I know, none of them were evacuating because they are not close enough to the shore...
 
You'd never recognize Florida today if you were intent on the Hurricane weather. It's what we're famous for in October and November. Clear, sunny skies and lows of 50 with highs of 68. It's absolutely gorgeous.

We went straight from summer to winter, LOL!
 
Wow, that was an interesting day and I can now say I've been thru a hurricane. Palm Beach actually got it worse than my parents in Naples, though it seems that Ft. Lauderdale and Miami and the Keys got the absolute worst of it. The "front" part of the hurricane was like a bad rain storm, windy, yes but doable if there is such a thing.

Then the "eye" and just a light wind.

The 2nd half was unnerving. It "bowed" our garage door in, they can "take" 150 mph winds, and I think we were around 90+ mph, that's fast enough for me, thank you very much--lol.
We lost power about 8:30 am monday and when you're riding it out you don't really pay attention to it. HOWEVER, we did not get power back until thursday morning(hubby told me to head to Jacksonville where we are in the process of selling our house--no furniture, but electricity and a hot shower, boy, it sure does make you appreciate hot water all the more!lol)

I can see how people can get a little "cabin fever" when this happens.
I tried to keep as normal a schedule as possible(didn't go to Jax until wed nite), got up, went running, but all there was to do was read and listen to the hurricane info on the radio. You didn't want to drive anywhere because of the gas issues--there's gas, but no electricity to the pumps. And when the sun goes down, it's pitch black. We are renting a house right now, and in retrospect should have gotten a generator, but we didn't, definitely a lesson learned.
Only problem is that the people with generators starting running out of gas, so they were in the same boat as us.

I'm annoyed by the way the people are acting on tv, don't believe we are all like that. FEMA has done the best job they can--the bottom line is if you took the time to prepare and with the hurricane stalling like it did, you really don't have an excuse to not have prepared at least somewhat. You do the best you can with what you have.

Thank you all for sending well wishes, it really means a lot. Luckily the house we are in did not sustain damage, BUT, I had to get 3 new tires for my car when I was in Jacksonville, unbeknownst to me while getting my oil changed, there were roofing nails in 3 of my tires--when the shingles blow off the nails go with them and fly all over. I can't believe I made it to Jax in the dark with a total of 6 nails in 3 tires--sheesh!!

One Cathe note(sorry this is so wordy)--I saw some friends where I used to work and they said, "you've lost weight"--I think it's more inches than weight, regardless, I owe it to Cathe's workouts(I did them on my laptop in Jax) and you guys for all the great info I see on the forums.
