Give yourself permission to enjoy the day!

I hope everyone actually allows his/herself to enjoy Turkeyday. If you eat Aunt Tillie's mince pie, I PROMISE it won't hurt you! Just be determined to get back on the wagon on Friday and please, please don't feel guilty for enjoying the food on Thursday.

I personally plan to up my cardio this week to kind of "train" for the eating I know I'll do, so there are all kinds of little tricks. You wouldn't think badly of anyone else who indulges on Thursday, so please don't do it to yourself.

End of sermon.

Thanx HB!!

I feel better already knowing the damage that will take place that day! Seriously, you are right. I LOVE Thanksgiving dinner and I plan to workout hard before and after it! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everyone and count your BLESSINGS!

RE: Thanx HB!!

There are 3000 calories in a pint of blood. I always used to give blood the week of Thanksgiving, effectively cancelling it out! It's also good for someone who needs my nice healthy blood. Just a thought.

3000 calories in a pint of blood!!

but it occurs to me

3000 calories in a pint of blood should make the anorexics take a dash to the red cross.

I heard on NPR there are websites for anorexics that discuss how to lose more weight.. with photos comparing bones.

I hear spitting out your saliva instead of swallowing it helps...do anyone know why?perhaps it shrivels the stomach to be dry.

RE: Thanksgiving Day food plan

I have found the perfect way to curb my appetite on this day and not overeat....I go to my mother in law's house. She is a wonderful woman but ye gads she can't cook.

Dry turkey, burnt vegetables, etc.

I will have no problem eating lightly when I am there.

Marlene...

Do we have the same mother-in-law??

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!

Erica

Turkey = lean protein

Marlene - this is the best strategy I've heard yet!!

Debbie - more power to you if you can work out AFTER thanksgiving dinner! You go girl!! I'll do my long run in the morning to get my metabolism up, but after dinner and the dishes... I'm pretty much done for the night :)

Happy Thanksgiving you guys!!!

RE: Turkey = lean protein

I'll work out BEFORE dinner, then after dinner I will slink into the room with the nearest couch and flop.

Oooops!

I meant the day BEFORE & the day AFTER!! Mind you, if I was going to be at home all day, (with NO COMPANY!) I just might, but NOPE, not this year! I have Chritsmas this year at my house, so I'll be up bright & early that day burning off my meal before I eat it. Happy Turkey Day everyone!

RE: Here, here!

Absolutely! My only other advice is this...eat slowly and really enjoy the flavors of all the forbidden foods that get a one-day absolution. And most important, I hope you all have some wonderful company to share your meal.

ahhh, Thanksgiving memoies

My mom usually roasts a turkey so big, that my brother has written papers for school about all the different things that can be done with turkey leftovers. AND, she bakes one pumpkin pie per person at the table plus one! Not to mention all the salads and other sides she creates. :9 She is known by family and friends as ODD...Over-Do-it-Dorothy! You gotta love a woman like that!

RE: ahhh, Thanksgiving memoies

That's too funny! Heck, my idea of a serving is half a pie, so I love eatin' at ODD's house. Just make mine mince.

I'm WAY over 21, so sometimes I'll just bypass the "real" food and head straight for the dessert. Maybe just swiss cheese and dessert. Sound good?:9

RE: ahhh, Thanksgiving memoies

I eat normally on Turkey day which happens to involve eating more than usual because we prepare a feast but no fretting is allowed! I have added two mile to several of my runs and will do that one more time. Then I am going to savor every bite!

May you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

RE: ahhh, Thanksgiving memoies

I love my Thanksgiving memories and my mom made the best pies. So in her tradition, I baked a couple pumpkins and whirled and swirled and made two pumpkin pies sans any pumpkin pie spice or nutmeg, just vanilla and cinnamon. I also made a low-fat pumpkin cheesecake with gingersnap crust.
But my mom's death is still so fresh for me.. and my dad's in a nursing home and doesn't know who the hell I am...so what's left of our family is getting together tomorrow for spaghetti and meatballs, homemade ravioli, stuffed shells, a big salad and some garlic bread. Then were having a bonfire. We're doing Thanksgiving just a little different this year.
Hope everyone has a great day regardless of the fare!

RE: ahhh, Thanksgiving memoies

Ahh, Amy, it's so sad when you lose someone you love and to lose someone you love while they remain with you must be even harder to bear. My beloved father died 5 years ago, the night after Thanksgiving. I think he stayed around that one last day just for us. I miss his smile. My mother is in Michigan, I in Tucson.

I remember one year that our long and laden Thanksgiving table split in two and everything slid to the center! Yet nothing spilled. I have 9 sisters and three brothers and our Thanksgivings were crazy family! What a din! I am thankful for so many things. God bless each of you. And Amy, I hope you find the strength to get through this tough time. I'll be thinking of you as I raise a glass for present and absent loved ones.

This too shall pass....

RE: 3000 calories in a pint of blood!!

Cinza, Thank you for posting exactly what I felt when I read that post. All I could think of when I read it was, good Lord, you've got to be kidding!! Freightening isn't it?

sorry honeybunch.

When i read about the 3000 calories you would give away in a pint of blood, i thought that was an easy way to reduce calories.
How tempting...

I had recently heard a report on NPR about anorexic websites that supported starving... where the girls swapped tips on how to starve. Donating blood would have been a good tip for getting rid of an extra 3000 calories once every couple of weeks.

RE: ahhh, Thanksgiving memoies

Bobbi,
Funny you should use one of my favorite adages by Goethe. I like you.
I feel your pain when talking of someone you love. My dad is here and he's not and my mom is gone and oh, how I miss her. If I imagine hugging her, I can still smell her skin. Better olfactory stimulus than any pumpkin pie.
Thanks for your prayers. I believe in the power of prayer. I'll keep you in mine. The holidays are hard. I had 3 sisters and still have 4 brothers, so I know about the holiday din with tons of people and tons of kids running around. I miss that.
My oldest sister was tragically killed in a weird car accident and I miss her still. But God has a plan and I've seen that plan in action. But, we all try to get together as much as possible..usually on Christmas eve. I have brothers and sisters all over so not everyone can make it. And you know, I love them all. And in the family tradition, I try to take in all the misfits, all my nephews' friends with disfunctional families, etc. for the holidays. Hey, we do have some fun. It's just feels right.
Take care, all of you, and please, never take the love of a family member or friend for granted. Tomorrow may never come. Hug them, kiss them, tell them how much you care TODAY.
Amy
