Gardeners: BEWARE OF

Cathlete
your roses! I just got out of a 4-day hospital stay for an infected left middle finger due to an embedded rose thorn. I had surgery, was treated with IV antibiotics and now have a cast to my elbow.

Be sure and wear thick, protective gloves when working on your roses. Watch out for any puncture-type wound. If you experience pain, redness, swelling and the redness moves away from the injury site, get to the ER ASAP! Elevation of the infected site and application of a hot compress will help to localize the infection.

On a positive note, one of the night nurses was a young man who obviously worked out (this boy had guns like you wouldn't believe.) When he went to take my blood pressure and saw the vein in the grove of my elbow and my bicep, he looked at me and said "Uh, do you work out a lot?":+ It made my day. So often we women are too hard on ourselves about our excess body fat and don't give ourselves credit for what we do. It was nice to be acknowledged in some small way!

Anyway thanks for "listening" and I'm much better now.

Take care,
Laura (a Catheite since 2001)

Wow, glad to hear you are doing fine after such an ordeal from a rose thorn! I will definitely be careful with my pruning!!!
Thanks,
Mary

Maybe they should change the name of the song from "Run for the roses" to "Run from the roses."
Glad your feeling better:)

Oh yeah, small puncture wounds from things like thorns, sewing needles, nails, cat bites, etc, are the worst! When you're punctured by something small like that, dirt and debris are forced into the wound and, unlike an open wound, such as a cut, the debris becomes trapped and can cause one he!! of an infection and/or tetanus!! Thank goodness you're okay!!

Wow, I never had a nurse like that..come to think of it, I've never BEEN a nurse like that:p :7

Michele,

That nurse (and the therapy dogs) were the highlight of my stay:p

Robin,

What a cool site. Thanks for posting it. I like working with fungus but feel the need for more education. Our lab is limited as to what we ID.
