Found abandonned dog at dog park this morning

Good morning everyone,

hope everyone is having a great day so far. My morning has been chaotic to say the least.

Went to the dog park with my dogs this morning and found an abandonned Weimeraner, approximately 1 to 2 years old that was dumped there with a bag of dog food. When I came there she was dripping wet (because of the sprinklers that had come on overnight)and filthy. She did have a tag on but the phone number doesn't work - there is a big surprise, huh?

She was scared out of her mind, and I almost started crying seeing her so frightened. However, when it came to what are we going to do and who is taking her, I found myself alone at the dog park :) everyone disappeared.

So I took her home with my other four dogs. Tried to get a hold of the Weimeraner Rescue here in AZ to no avail so far. Called Maricopa Animal Control, they really didn't have much to say, other than they could pick her up - I didn't want her to end up in the shelter though, I think this is a pretty scary place for dogs.

I definately can't keep her, she does get along with my other dogs, but I already have 4 dogs, there is no way I could keep another one, especially another big dog - she is about 60 lbs.

Animal control basically throws up their hands in the air and says, if you don't want to bring her in or have us pick her up, you can do with her what you want. I am hoping a friend of mine who had a Weimeraner before can convince her boyfriend to take her - I think that would be the best solution.

Anyone have any ideas that I haven't come up with or know anyone in AZ who wants a very sweet Weimeraner. She LOVES my kids, she licked them all over with her little tail wagging like there is no tomorrow within a couple of minutes of me bringing her home, she gets along well with all of my dogs, particularly with the Aussies, she is running and playing with them. She didn't even mind the cat and just sniffed at him.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated because I know my husband WILL divorce me with a 5th dog }(

Have a great day!

Carola

Oh I wish I could take her!! She sounds wonderful. I live in Maryland though....

Good Luck - thanks for taking care of her. Maybe someone reading in your area will adopt her?

Good luck finding the baby a new home. How can people do such horrible things? If she actually had tags, I would see if the authorities can find out who owned that phone number - they can be charged with/fined for dumping her (and frankly, should be jailed).

Poor dog, that's so nice of you to take care of her. I hope you find someone loving to take her.

Google that number with the area code first and see if you get a name. I don't understand how people can do that!?!?!

I completely empathize with you. I am also in the same boat with my DH, he couldn't take another animal----2 dogs, was 3:(, 3 cats, 2 birds---all we need now is a farm:)

I volunteer at the local animal shelter, and it is a very sad place for animals to be...Whenever I find a stray, it's heart-wrenching because I too get turned away, or they say bring them in and they might find room in the back...

Not enough shelters/love for animals in this world...I would love to start one of my own, but I wouldn't know where to begin financially...

I hope you find a good home for her...

I can't imagine no one wanting what sounds like a beautiful animal. Can you place an ad somewhere - free to good home? My mother had a weimeraner and she was the smartest, nicest dog she ever had. I'm sorry I'm all the way in PA.

Oh, AZ is not that far from PA, you will only drive for 2 or 3 days, piece of cake ;)

Yeah, she is a beautiful and sweet dog, you wouldn't think that someone would just dump her like a piece of garbage. But then again the shelters are full of beautiful and terrific pets that get abandonned.

Weimeraners are not dogs for everyone though, they need lots of exercise and a lot of obedience training or they will find their own entertainment }( . It just gets to me that people will get those cute little puppies without thinking that this is a 10 or 15-year commitment, then they turn out to be a little more work anticipated and those poor animals get dumped!

She has had no training in my opinion, didn't know how to sit or walk on a leash. So I have been taking her for a walk around the block and she catches on pretty quickly, and she was walking nicely on the leash within 30 minutes.
I think she is pretty tired because she also ran with my Aussies at the dog park for an hour and she probably spent all night there. She was just happy that someone would pay attention to her and she had a roof over her head again.

Right now all 5 of them are happily chewing their bones. At least that keeps her from carrying around my kids' stuffed animals :)

Have a great day everyone!

Carola

Good luck with finding her a home.
I'd keep trying the Weimeraner Rescue group (since there is one).

My suggestion is take her!!!!! I looked at your picture trail and saw how many dogs you have and thought that you must love them soo much and take really good care of them. I bet if you took in the stray it would be very happy:)

Good luck!

You are funny Adri!!! I love dogs but as I said, my husband would divorce me if I kept the dog. Hard decision though: husband - dog which one will stay }(

I don't have a big enough house and car for 5 dogs. It was kind of interesting having 5 dogs in a Honda Accord this morning.

LOL Carola!!! Well they do say dog is a GIRLS best friend.... No JK I don't think you should give up your husband for the dog:+:+ But he's homeless;( LOL! Do what you think is best;-)

Oh, Carola! I can't believe anyone would do that. She sounds like such a sweetie-pie. You are such a dear for trying to find her a home. Try posting at your gym, church, wherever you can. Be sure to add a CUTE picture of her. That usually works ;) .

I can never understand how some one can just drop off a dog. I guess this person thought he/she was doing it responsably by leaving it in a contained area and providing food. It's like leaving a baby on the doorstep. I wish you luck in finding a home or organization that can help. Here are a few websites that I found.

And the contact person’s name is Wiemer. Wonder if that's why she likes weimaraners.

Also, check with pet stores (Petco, Petsmart) in your area. Many are affiliated with no kill organizations that have pet adoptions from their stores once a month.

Get in touch with Best Friends Animal Society, located in Utah. They have people all over the US & Europe & might be able to help you. I tried to google it but my computer keeps getting stuck. I give money to them whenever I can. They are a wonderful organization that helps all animals. Please let me know what happens

Carola - OH!!! How heartbreaking! You're doing such a good thing - you should feel good about yourself. But, I know how having one more dog in the house can cause craziness. I so wish I could help you and take her for you, but my DH would murder me as well (and I only have TWO dogs!). She sounds like a wonderful dog. I seriously think if you wait through the weekend, the Rescue Groups will come to help.

Please do keep us informed on what happens. If you don't get the help you need, you might want to go around to local pet stores and ask if they know of anyone looking for a Weimer - you might be able to post her photo and description as well. Petfinders.com is also a resource.
