For those of you who run. Wow!

I work at a Juvenile Center and just took the boys in the weight room tonight. Usually I lift weights with them, but tonight I decided to run on the treadmill. I did a 30 second sprint followed by a 2 minute fast walk/jog (on an incline, with pretty good resistance) for about 20 minutes. I was dying afterwards. It's amazing how a different form of cardio can kill you. I can do an 45 minutes of advanced step aerobics or intervals, but 20 minutes of the treadmill workout and I was dying.:+ I realize I need to challenge myself aerobically now. I am going to do this again next Saturday and see if I can go 30 minutes straight. I did rest awhile and did another 10 minutes and for some reason it got a little easier. I can really feel it in my hamstrings. At first when I started, I got that burn in my chest and all I could think is "I can't be this aerobically out of shape!" To say the least I am so sweaty my co-workers are a bit grossed out by my appearance. But it sure feels good!}(

A runner is born!

Be prepared to get hooked! I have observed that most people either love it or hate and if you are looking foreward to doing it again you could be a runner in the making. I ran 1.3 miles without stopping the first time I tried it and I was hooked. It remains my true love although I have feet probs that require me to be very careful about how long and how hard I go. I hazard to guess you will adapt to it quickly and it's a beautiful cardio activity, my favorite. When I raced, I often used Imax to work on my endurance, to increase my oxygen uptake to develop speed and it worked like a charm. Keep us posted!

Yes...be careful like Bobbi said or you for sure will be hooked like some of us silly veteran runners! I remember back many years ago...I couldn't run for about 5 years due to an injury but I was stepping and doing other aerobics. I went on a trip with my Sisters family and we decided to run to the beach and back...only 6 miles. I thought "I can do it, I'm in good shape"...ha,ha,ha,.....my quads were SCREAMING the next day. Definitely different muscles used in running.. :D ..so...take it easy and enjoy the rush...:)...Carole

It totally shapes my legs and makes me so much leaner than any other form of cardio it does humble you.I love it even though I feel as if I am going to die.I do the sprint intervals outside on a path I've made at my house. all winter I couldn't do it because of the weather.I try to get in 1 session a week this week I got in 2 I need to loose a few pounds and running does it.The second session was a endurance based I jogged lightly and each time I made a lap I speed up the first time I got in 4 laps and walked a lap but it went down hill after the 4 to 3 laps 1 walk I did this for 20 min,it was different than the sprint as hard as I can for a lap and walk for a lap.I sweated like I never had before.I can't stand to run on pavement just grass and dirt.;-)

I agree.Running is a different form of cardio.I find running, kick boxing, step and swimming to all be different forms.I think I find myself most out of breathe when I swim.
When I started running it took me a while to get into it.You have to take breaks and catch your breath. Then as the years went by, I found that doing interval workouts in the winter monthes kept my endurance up and as soon as the snow melted I could run as fast and as far as I did the season before.
But I bet you...if I gave my running partner a Cathe interval workout to do, she would probably be gasping for air and have to give up.
I went from: running 5 kms,to running 8 kms,to running 10 kms and now I am curtainly at 14 kms while I am talking to my running partner.I didn't start running with anyone until I was at 14kms.I didn't really have the disire to b/c you have to find someone who runs the same pace as you do.I knew she was a runner for years and one day we were out at the sametime and ran together and now we always go together. It makes the run go by so much faster.
Good Luck...let us kow how you progress!

We got a freakishly cool day here today, and I was inspired to go running. I haven't been in 6 or 7 weeks, since in NC, I only run from October until early May.

It was tough! I ran my usual hilly 5 mile loop. It was 75 degrees, very very humid and breezy like it wanted to storm. A bit warm and muggy for me, but also, it's amazing how hard it is to run if you aren't used to it. I did Imax on 8" just a few days ago and Leaner Legs yesterday, followed by the inner/outer thigh work from PP.

But running is different from all the Cathe stuff. I do wish I could do it more often, but once the temperature climbs over 70, it's just not possible for me!

Keep at it, you'll love the variety. Trail running is far superior to treadmills for me, but it's all good.

RE: For those of you who run. Wow! - Recommend How to Start

Can someone recommend a running program for a beginner. I have a treadmill and believe running will help me in the cardio dept. since I am lacking in that area.

Thanks.

Interesting feedback. I don't know if I will ever become a distance runner. I always was a sprinter and had a difficult time with distance running. Not to sound like a wimp, but the pavement kills my shins and ankles. But I am thinking of doing the jog/sprint thing at least once a week. The treadmill was great. I never thought I would get into the treadmill, simply because I hate stationary equipment. But, I made it into a challenging workout and now I need to keep that challenge in my workout routine. It was interesting to here that those who are primarily runners have a hard time with step/interval workouts. I wondered that as well. Thanks for the encouragement. Again runners, I admire your lung capacity, because mine needs some work!

And dont forget what a joy it is running on a GOOD treadmill. We have some awesome Life Fitness treadmills at my gym and I simply love them. I cant wait to do a step class then head off to the treadmill for a mile or to two and really kick up the burn.

I hear ya about 'different'. I always ran, and when I started doing Cathe's---I felt out of shape.

I had done Firm workouts and such, but NOTHING prepared me for a Cathe!
