Down the Shore suggestions?

Jerseyites: The SO and I are looking to get away down the shore for a day or two (because if I don't get to the beach this summer, I think I'm going to go out of my mind). We're coming from NYC and don't have a car...so we'll have to take the train or bus. In any case, can anyone recommend an area of the shore to try? We basically want to relax, go swimming, maybe walk around a cute town. Nothing loud or rowdy. I looked at Cape May, but it seems kind of far to go for about a one night stay, which is all we can really swing this year. I've never been to the Jersey shore, so don't really know where else might be good to try.

Thanks for the help!

LBI is quiet. That I know but I don't know what there is to do.

Wildwood is AWESOME but I don't think that is what you are looking for as it's got a HUGE boardwalk which is it's major attraction aside from the extraordinary beach.

Point Pleasant is pretty nice too. Boardwalk and beach. Can get quite crowded though.

Seaside Heights I have not been to in years but hear that it's pretty awful so I'd avoid it if I were you.

I know nothing about Belmar, though I think it's very much a party atmosphere...lots of bars and such.

I'm thinking LBI may be the closer alternative to Cape May...check it out.

Thanks--actually Wildwood looks like a lot of fun. And the train seems to run there, which is a plus. Going to look into it more. :) Will also look at LBI.

Think about some of the closer shore points. As mentioned above, I frequent the area between Ocean Grove and Point Pleasent. Personally I LOVE Ocean Grove (exit 100 on the Pkway). It is a gorgeous, well maintained shore town, very quiet, beautiful beach, lovely boardwalk for long strolls (but no attractions)...there are snack stands though. The style of the town is Victorian and there is a nice main street with several cute shops and restaurants. Just a note, the beach doesn't open until 12:30 on sunday's (it's a town big on family and there are several gorgeous churches, and they strive to maintain the quietness of a "sunday".) Otherwise, I would definitely think about going there. Also, I just noticed you were interested in a one night stay...there are some GREAT bed & breakfasts there, very charming...don't remember names off the top of my head but a google search of ocean grove B&B should do the trick.
Just a sidenote: Belmar and Point Pleasent can be a parking nightmare but worth it if you want to try. Hope this helps! Enjoy your trip "down the shore";-)

Thanks, Nancy. I had no idea that Wildwood was far! (Didn't check the bus schedules yet.) Spring Lake looks very promising.

ETA:

Also, does anyone know of places to go horseback riding on the shore? :)

Roughly, Wildwood is about 150 miles from NYC, while Spring Lake is about 60 miles or so. It's a big difference.

Both Wildwood and Spring Lake are on the pricey side. A single night wouldn't be bad, but, if I remember correctly (it's been ages since I've gone to the beach because my family bought a vacation home in the Poconos and that's where I go now), you may have a hard time getting a room for a single night on the Jersey shore. They may have a 2-night minimum during the height of the season. You should start making some phone calls.

Hope this helps, Bunbun.

BTW, Barnes and Noble has some great books about NYC weekend getaways if you want more ideas.

Wait a sec, I just realized (duh) that if you stay at a B&B at Ocean Grove, you can get a badge to go on the beach. Ocean Grove is just a few miles south of Spring Lake, so it's another excellent option as Catie was saying. Again, however, you're probably looking at a 2-night minimum. But do check it out.

Thanks. We're planning to do a Sunday night-Monday stay, and most places look like they don't require a 2-night minimum for weekdays. Ocean Grove and Spring Lake both look like good options.
