Doggie eye scratch

Last night my dog and cat got into it a bit, and the dog got his eye scratched. It was watering pretty bad, and he was crying when I tried to look at it. By bedtime, the watering wasn't as bad, and he let me at least touch the area to take a look.

This morning, after cleaning away the eye boogers, I noticed there was a cloudy film over the eye, almost like a cataract. I could tell it was still uncomfortable for him, because he was still squinting a little, but it seems to be getting better.

Should I take him to the vet, or just let it heal on its own? Is there anything the vet can do for a scratched eye? Or is there something in my kitchen I can whip up for him?
 
Nicole - I would get him to the vet. Dakota recently had an eye injury and the vet told me you just don't mess with eye injuries. If it gets infected, he could lose his sight. I would at least call the vet and ask what they think. I'm pretty sure if you describe this to them that they are going to tell you to bring him in as soon as possible.
 
I would definitely make a visit to the vet. 2 years ago my dog got scratched in the eye by a squirrel. We did not realize he had scratched her until 2-3 weeks later. We were out of town for a few days, and when she got home her eye looked terrible. I ( and the vet) cannot believe she did not lose her eye. We could have avoided many weeks of treatment if we had realized right away she had been scratched. We are SO lucky she has both eyes!

I also had a cat lose an eye from being scratched, so please go to the vet, just to be on the safe side.

My dog just recovered from a scratched cornea that he got from horsing around with our new puppy. The vet gave me drops to put in and a pet-form of Neosporin (sp) that I put in twice a day. He was back to normal in about two weeks.

Sounds like the same thing your dog has! We now keep a closer eye on the WWF that goes on over here! :D

Thanks girls!! I took him to the vet, and she said cats claws harbor lots of ucky bacteria, so I'm glad I took him in. He got a anti-inflammatory/pain pill, an anti-biotic, and some anti-bacterial goo to put into his eye. She said he'll still be squinting for a few day, but should be good as new :)
