Describe your silliest workout outfit ever!

Hey Mogambo!

Liane, they WERE terrifying outfits, and on some level I think we all knew it while we were wearing them! :)

You know, I loved those "women's tennis socks" with the pom-poms and I never see them anywhere now. I guess they're just hopelessly out of style. But they allowed you to wear a footie sock that wouldn't slip down inside your shoe, you know? I like to wear footie socks now if I'm outside walking or (occasionally) jogging, so that I don't get as horrible a farmer's tan on my feet and ankles. But I have yet to find a brand of sock that doesn't eventually, after a few washings, start slipping down on my feet. Then you gotta stop and unlace your shoe and adjust your sock... . Frustrating! x(

For that reason, if I could find pom-pom socks I would buy them and I would fearlessly wear them out in public where people could stare and point. And I would snarl defiantly at them as I whizzed by! ;-)

RE: Patricia!

Let's see.....I had a very shiny set of turqoise blue stirrup tights, with one of those bikini sets that was hot pink and turqoise to wear over top of them. I had hot pink matching leg warmers and head band. I remember the shoes that I wore at that time with that outfit were LA Gear.

When I FIRST started working out, my workout gear consisted of Danskin tights, leotard, leg warmers, wrist bands, headband, and the shoes were like ballet slippers (ala isotoner). This outfit was navy and white....pretty conservative compared to the aforementioned :+

Oh, those were the days......! Thank goodness I can now workout in whatever I want!!!

Hey...come to think of it, I think I still have that pink and turqoise thing in the bottom of one of my drawers!

RE: Hey Candi, a question for ya!

Yes, I was on the rug. I would not recommend, especially when doing planks. My little tummy pooch was hanging down. Not very flattering.
I don't feel any rug burn, though.

I know, I know, too much information! LOL

RE: Patricia!

My pom-pom socks often matched my Izod shirt, but that is off topic. Remember the Preppy Handbook? That was me.

Anyway, a good set of footie socks that never ever get sucked into my shoes no matter what are Thorlos I got at D!ck's.

Keep telling me all your funny outfits.

My cheap philosophical explanation of these stupid outfits is that it was only then that women were really feeling that it was OK to workout at all. Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Jane Fonda. But it made us uncomfortable to not be perceived as "feminine". Thus all the concern with matching accessories and uncomfortable silly clothes. It was so important to use 2 lb dumbells so we wouldn't bulk up and it was so important to wear lots of makeup and not get too sweaty. Am I right?

Finally, it became culturally acceptable to have some muscles. (Thank you Linda Hamilton) We all started wearing sports bras and spandex shorts or gym shorts. Still feminine, but not silly and uncomfortable.

Anyone agree with me?

RE: Patricia!

Sure mogambo, I think I understand exactly what you're saying! Only men were "supposed" to go to a gym and workout, much less have muscles! LOL!! Thank you Billie Jean and Martina and Jane!! And countless others as well. In a way, they paved the road for all of us today!!

I had to laugh at your "thank you Linda Hamilton" comment about muscles!! LOL! I assume you're referring to the second Terminator movie? She looked AWESOME in that one!!

Re: Linda Hamilton

Hey Mogambo!

Thorlos -- ah, now THERE'S a great sock, but wow, are they $$$$. Too much moola for regular everyday socks, at least so far - if my frustration level rises I may cave. :)

It's funny you mentioned Linda Hamilton. I have this very distinct recollection of seeing T2 and the sight of her physique being a real revelation to me. I thought she looked absolutely terrific -- somehow very tough and buff and cool in a very female way. And I also remembered how radically different she looked in Terminator One, and I found it mind-boggling what she had achieved. I believe T2 came out around 1991 or so -- I had been FIRMing for just a few years with a break for pregnancy number two (son #2 born December 1989) and I was just kinda rockin' and rollin' along doing FIRMs Vol. I through whatever they were on, not really paying any attention to any particular goals or results other than "losing baby weight" and "toning up" (remember that term?) What Linda Hamilton had done to her body just SLAMMED my motivation into focus. I started thinking about working on particular muscle groups, and setting goals.

And gee, it's funny that this was absolutely my epiphany moment, but I hadn't thought about it in years! :)
