Clothing sizes

Ha .. good point if any of you feel the sizes are small go by a fabric.. you 2s will suddenly be 8... personally i dont like that feeling either... ha ha ..

Vanity sizing drives me crazy! I'm 5'9", long-limbed, slim-hipped and weigh 125 lbs. I'm usually a size 4 at the Gap but have a size 0 skirt from them. (And I agree with Maximus - what the he**'s a ZERO? Does it mean it's no size at ALL? Is it INVISIBLE?) In other brands mentioned (Ellen Tracy, Ann Taylor, Old Navy), I'm a 2-4, but inconsistently so. I also rarely order online because sizing is too unpredictable and I'm too lazy to get out a tape measure and measure everywhere to compare my measurements to the company's stupid chart. If I was a size 4 last year at the Gap, I should be so this year and not have to remeasure every time I buy something.

And don't get me started about men's clothing. Men can not only choose inseam (which at 34", I'd love to do), they can choose collar circumference and sleeve length. And I doubt they buy nearly the amount of clothes women buy. Why can't a size 8 be so-and-so many inches at the waist, bust, hips, etc ACROSS THE BOARD with EVERY MANUFACTURER? (I'm sorry I'm yelling, but this stuff MAKES ME MAD!!)

I'm glad cropped pants are in, because I often have trouble finding pants that are long enough. I have two pairs of size 14 boys' jeans and khakis and they're nice and slim in the hips with a perfect (at least on me) cropped length. If you have a similar body-type to mine, head to the boys' department for some cropped pants!

Susan,
Wow! You sure are willowy. It's amazing you can find anything at all to fit. You are definitely not built like the typical American woman. I'm envious as all get-out, but appreciate the difficulty you must have buying clothes.

I think sizing has gotten bigger in bottoms and stayed the same/gotten smaller in tops. I recently went shopping and had to buy size 6 or 8 in trousers/skirts whereas my 10-year-old size 12s are just a little on the loose side. When it came to new shirts and especially sweaters, though, I found L/XL 12/14 has become tighter... at least on me. Dress shopping has become a nightmare! If it fits around the bust it swings like a bell from there on down. If it fits in the waist and hips, I have to give up on breathing and moving my arms. My measurements, fitness level, and weight are pretty much the same as they were 10 years ago and I don't remember having this problem then. Has anyone found that the new sizes are not only bigger, but more "bottom heavy"?

This is very interesting. I've always been a 4-6 and this summer had to break down and buy new suits, etc., for work. My new size is a 2! I have never worn a 2 in my life and my old clothes are not too big! So I was thinking the same thing that they've altered the sizing once again. This does make it challenging for buying on-line. So you have to memorize what size you are in what brand.

I also noticed this. I recently bought jeans and had to go down to a size 1. Where do you go after this? I usually wear a 3-5 with 2's sometimes. When I had to go to a 1 I asked my husband if I looked skinnier. I stay away from the scale most of the time. This was several months ago. I think they have to draw a line somewhere or I will be wearing my Grandchildrens clothes:). I have learned to never order out of catalog. I end up sending back more than I keep. Even places I normally order from.

Sizes have definitely changed. I went from 130 to 232 and stayed there about 10 years. Now I'm on the way down to 120 and I'm at 152 and I am now in 8 petites or M petites. I still have 32 lbs. to lose and I'm wearing the same size I did before gaining weight which is 22 lbs. lighter than I am right now. Some cuts I need a 10 petite but still...I should be a 12 or 14 right now based on what I wore prior to my weight gain. I guess I'll be a 0, 2 or 4 when I get to my goal...that's OK as long as I don't end up in the negative sizes. :p

VENUS!

I do have to tell you what a great inspiration you are to have worked and reached your goals. You look great. Thanks for sharing your pics and info..

What I hate is when a size 8 by one manufacturer is the same as a size 6 from someone else, and a size 10 from a third. And some "mediums" are an 8-10, while others are a 10-12 (and I often wear about an 11 on top because of my shoulders) (I wish that women's sizes were standardized, the way men's are. For men, a 36 pant is the same size anywhere you go. But then again, I don't know if I'd want my size to be based on an actual measurement, the way men's sizes are.
