Chin-Up Check-In Wed 3.29

Soosan

Cathlete
Here's another trembling-handed report of my chin-up training:

5 10-ct negs
1 4-ct neg

A little worse than Monday - I might need more rest in between.

If it weren't for this check-in, I would not have done them today because I HATE THEM!!!!!!!

"If it weren't for this check-in, I would not have done them today because I HATE THEM!!!!!!!!!"

My thoughts exactly!

When you reach for your bar, do you have to jump for it? My feet are on the floor and I just reach up for it. With that being said, I can do one or two chin ups. But, I am not hanging. So, I don't know it that really counts as a chin up. I have tried it with my feet hanging and I can only pull my self up just a teeny weeny little bit. Oh brother!

So, I still did the cheat ones.

Joanne

I don't have to jump for it and can also do a few chin-ups if they're not from a dead hang. When I'm not doing negatives, but just walking by the bar, one thing I do is decrease the angle of my bent arms so that I'm as close to a dead hang as possible (i.e. as straight as I can make my arms but with feet still on the floor), but can still pull myself up. Each time I do this, I try to decrease the angle further (it's not very much). But it's that lower portion of the chin-up that's the "sticky point" and that's what I'm trying to build strength for to get past. It's so hard!

Hi ladies, glad to see you're hard at it.

Today is cardio and core only for me and I have guests coming for the next few days and DSs' play performances all weekend. This will undoubtedly throw off my workouts, but I'll do something.:)

Hi Sooooooooooooosan & Joanne! Good job! Boy, they sure are a struggle, eh? I also wouldn't even THINK of doing them if I hadn't made the commitment with you guys. I admit it! :7 I did 9 today and have found that by placing my knees against the pad as I "slide" down helps me a lot. I have to step up on some side-rails to even reach the bar & then jump up to get my chin above the bar and come down to a 5-7 count. My arms are rock HARD when I do it. Wish they'd stay that way when I am done! Ha! I will only have two more check-ins (Friday & Monday) before I leave for our Coordinators RT. I will report back on the 10th. "See" you Friday and Good Luck! We'll get there one of these days.

Hi Melody! We were posting at the same time. Have fun with your guests and see if you can sneak away just for 1-2 minutes to do your chin-ups! That's an order! Just Kidding! Have a nice week.

Debbie, Joanne, & Sooooooooooooosan great job!!!
Sooooooooooooosan some days are better than others, I am finding that out first hand. I am really enjoying this check in. It's the first one that I've stuck with in a long time.

Today I surprised myself. I did 6 sets of 1 rep unassisted chinups!!!! (actually the first two sets I did 1 & 1/2, after that too hard to try that 1/2). I actually thought I'd only done 5 sets but wrote them down as I did them and counted them up. Today was P90X legs and back. So I also did wide front pull ups- 4 negative and 4with chair assist; close grip pullups- 3neg and 4 w/ chair, standard width pull up- 4 w/ chair, and chinups as above plus 3 sets of negatives- 6 reps, 5 reps, and 4 reps (hope this makes sense)!!

We are all gonna look so good in our tank tops this summer. Anyone else noticing their sleeves getting tight on their shirts. DH laughed his head off at me the other night cause I said that my sleeve where getting tight!!!!

Keep em comin ladies

Debbie, great going and thanks for checking in. Aren't you glad you're getting some use out of your power tower? Is DH joining you at all?

Catherine, you are doing absolutely awesome!!! Were these 6 sets of 1 unassisted rep a part of the P90X workout or did you do them in addition to it?

Tank tops, here we come...

Thanks Soooooooooooosan!! The 6 sets of 1 rep were part of the P90X workout. Tony alternates legs and back. So at the beginning of each back section 1 would attempt to do a chinup. Believe me though, that last one was pretty ugly x( !!!

Catherine

UGLY is better then not trying! Keep up the good work Catherine!

Hi Sooooooooosan. (Was TOO lazy to count the o's today! ;-)) Yes, I am thrilled that I am using it..honest! I feel guilty if I buy something and don't use it so this is a great challenge for me. Gotta share something...my students know about our chin-up challenge (which BTW, not one of them can do one either) and one of them said to the class today, "Loook at the muscle in her arms! It has to be those chin-ups!" Then, one said, "Oh no, she's going to be trying to figure out how we can do them at class." Trust me, if we had a bar, we would! :7 Sooo, even if our attempts are ugly, we are still working the muscles hard! Yeeeah! No, haven't gotten David down to the basement to attempt one. Maybe, I'll see if I can talk him into trying one tomorrow on his day off since I have to go down & do mine. I'll report back after I'm done.

Debbie,
That's too funny about your students!!! :D You are right, just trying does increase muscle. I have seen awesome results.

Talking about DH's joining in. When we got our power tower my DH tried to do chinup and was struggling. He was able to do one and struggle up for two. So I don't feel so bad. He can now do about 4-5.

A little suggestion - you can have your arms SLIGHTLY bend for a chin-up, so you don't have to do them from an absolute dead hang. Note the word "slightly."

"It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." Mark Twain ;-)

Can you have them slightly bent with your feet touching the floor?

And who makes up these rules anyway?}(

Finally got a chance to read all your posts and you guys are doing sooooooooooooo well (with 13 o's!!). Catherine...I like to do what your doing, incorporate chinups into the P90X workouts and always do the the first ones unassisted. Believe me guys...like Debbie said....doing negatives will begin to build that muscle in your back and the rest will come.

Weird happening... I always do that stretch where you grasp your hands behind your back and stretch down (or up and out). After doing pullups, I found that I could grasp my hands, but it felt like there was something in the way. It's called...muscle, whether they were just getting tighter, firmer, bigger...I'm not sure, but it feels really weird now as before I could squeeze my hands right together. Anyone else have this happen over their years of working out?

Want to hear something really irritating...I had a friend stop over..she says she has been doing pushups in the morning and wanting to workout more. She walks over to my pullup bar and does three pullups. Genetics?? She is younger and not overweight - very average, but not "toned" shape if you know what I mean. I thought..."man, how did you do that???". I've been struggling for months and I weigh probably 15-20 pounds less than her. Life's not fair at times.

Oops...I'm supposed to post results, almost forgot.

Wednesday didn't post back. No more donuts and only 4 chinups and I quit. This past week my mom was admited to ICU cardio unit and I have a child with the flu and have had NOOOOO sleep. That's what happens when life happens I guess.

I did PH this morning and subbed in chinups for Cathe's back work. Did 7 the first set and almost made it to the top of the 8th, but caved and it was not a slow descent. I did another set of 4, then 3 and then did several negatives. I'd like to do some more negatives -one at a time throughout the day today when I pass through our school room. I did the power hour warm up and am realizing that I HAVE to do the P90X warm up before chinups. I have a bad spot in my back that acts up if I don't stretch/warm up enough and it's there again. Gotta do more stretching pre and post workouts - age makes it more necessary I believe!! Again....you guys are doing great. You are making me keep going or believe me...I'd have stopped with all thats going on right now!!

Briee

I'm LOL....who does make up these rules anyway....WE DO!!

We're the chinup thread and we make the rules!!! he he

Briee, sorry to hear about this, I hope your mom is better. And wow, then a child sick with the flu. That does equal no sleep!!

Oh and about your friend who just jumped up and did three pullups. Politely tell her to BITE ME!! ;) JK, well mostly.

Catherine

LOL - I promise to remember to tell her :7 :7 :7 . It was truly irritating and just plain not fair!!
