Brazilian Keratin Hair Treatment Done!

Hi Suz,

I used to get the Japanese hair straightening but stopped because of the time and cost, so I was very intrigued by your post. I've never even heard about Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT I guess it's called).

But, I did a google search and came up with some concerns which I don't know if you're aware of: (scroll down toward the middle for BKT)

Allure magazine also did an investigative piece.

I was all excited about this procedure until I read these articles.

ETA: I've read further and it seems that the main cause for worry is that some of the forumulations contain formaldahyde (sp?). Some salons claim to use forumulations that do not contain this?

Becky - Thank you! And yes, Gizmo is adorable, isn't he? We love him. :)

MadnNatsmom - I did ALL of my research before getting this treatment, trust me. I would never do something so drastic to my hair without doing my research. I have been considering straightening my hair for over 4 years now, so this isn't something I just decided overnight. Earlier in this thread I linked to naturallycurly.com where I started my research and the threads there are pretty controversial about this process - some people are all for it and some people wouldn't touch it with a 10 ft. pole. The place I went to has a product that uses less than 2 percent formaldehyde, it doesn't touch your scalp and he uses a fume extractor and he had my hair up in that thing the entire time it was on the flat iron. Not a fume got away from him. He is also concerned for his own health. He said that some stylists refuse to use the fume extractor b/c of the overhead and he thinks they are absolutely nuts. I plan to get this process done 1 or 2 more times until my hair is healthy enough to move onto a more permanent process and one that doesn't use formaldehyde. Thanks for your concern.
