Bikram Yoga

Have any of you tried Bikram Yoga. I started doing it a couple weeks ago and I love it. For those of you who don't know what it is: Bikrim yoga consists of 26 Hatha Yoga postures and 2 breathing exercises. Half of the postures are performed while standing, half are performed on the floor, and all are repeated twice during each 90 minute session. The classes are conducted in a heated facility. Its kind of like doing yoga in a sauna. It is so intense and you feel so freshed after. I would definately recommend it to anyone who really wants to sweat and loose some calories. You can loose 600-800 calories in one class!!! Not only that but Bikram Yoga improves the body's ability to digest and eliminate food efficiently, while stimulating the glands responsible for regulating metabolism. :7 Just thought I would share incase anyone feels like changing it up a little bit with something new. Have a great night!!

I used to practice Bikram years ago. I think the room is heated to over 100°F. I really miss what it does for my flexibility and even for my skin.

I don't do Bikram, but I took my first live yoga class 3 weeks ago while on vacation, and let me say, I am hooked!! I found a wonderful studio 10 mins from my house and have been going 3 days a week ever since. I had tried videos/dvds previously, and found it to be just "ok", but the live clase is amazing!!!! I wish I would have tried it sooner.

I teach hot yoga - room is heated to 105 - though Bikram's can typically go to 110 - which believe me, is a huge difference - makes ya want to throw up! The first class, expect to wilt into child's pose for awhile, but let yourself melt...I felt like my heart was going to jump out of my chest, convinced it was deadly....and now I teach it! The heat is addicting, and your skin will look great...they claim that you excrete toxins, and as a nurse, I thought, ""yeah, right, its sodium and urea"" but studies show that prolonged sweating will excrete metals such as mercury...some 911 firefighters, in a ptsd treatment program were given sauna's twice a day and started excreting blue dye! So, yes, hot yoga, especially with some humidifiers going, really makes you feel cleansed...I end class with icey cold washclothes on people's heads while they relax...they love it!

I was doing it for about 2 months about 1 year ago. A little expensive, expecially since I already had a gym membership. I really liked it a first (it did wonders for my flexibility), but I found after a while I got tired of the same routine, and it was hard to fit into my schedule. It is funny that you brought it up, I was just talking about with a friend the other day. I might just pop into the studio and take a class. My favorite part about it was the sweat factor. I felt like I dropped ten lbs every class. Enjoy yourself. Alicia

I've never taken a live (hot!) class, but I have and still use a 20-year-old Raquel Welch VHS video called Total Beauty and Fitness. (No snickering about Raquel, she's actually EXCELLENT at the postures.) Anyhow it's the Bikram sequence, and I love the video and love holding the poses, I feel like I get more benefit from this video than from the "vinyasa flow" type yoga. I wish someone else would make a Bikram video, there was one that I saw awhile ago but the guy leading the video was like SCARY yogic, and I never bought the video...

Yeah it can get kind of expensive. I think my class is $15 and I try to go at least once a week. It can add up, but I love it sooooooo much. And I figure since its good for me why not, better then spending it on junk food...hehehehe :9

I just got the new videos Adrieene Reed's Body Transformation set from
http://www.adriennereed.com/Videos.htm

I only got to view Fat Burner. She also mentioned about room temperature. She said at 80 ~ 90 degree. You can choose 20 min, 40 min, 60 min. The intensity of workout is the same, just you can choose the one fit in your workout schedule. It looks pretty good.

In the past I've seen a show or two where they've talked about Bikram Yoga and shown clips. Ok, Nicole, how stinky is it in there anyway? :p

The stinky factor: don't wear any chemicals, including deodorant to class so you can sweat - its not stinky unless it hits clothes I think...but be clean as ya can..we have a floor that is antimicrobial and doesn't stink up like carpet can..I agree that "the series" can get tedious, so I mix it up..and we added a class called""hot vinyasa"" - which is yoga in heat and I use what I learned from Doug Swenson (the yoga teachers' yoga teacher!)...some folks like the same old routine every class - I like variation....so come to see me in Williamsburg!!! And don't be intimidated, if you can do Cathe, you can do hot yoga!
