best way to lower resting heart rate?

I think so. It is just cardiovascular conditioning. Resting heart rate can be influenced by other factors too I think.

I finally bought a HRM and I was wondering what an average resting heart rate is? Does anybody know or know of a sight that would have this? Thanks!:)

Denise

It generally drops as your cardiovascular fitness improves, but I believe it's endurance work, 90+ minutes, that affects the resting rate significantly. Mine dropped over 10 beats (to 48) when I trained for bike centuries & touring.

Don't get too hung up on resting heart rate since genetics is a big factor. It is good to monitor in case it spikes which is an indication of over-training or stress.

The average heart rate is just the average while your timer is on (presumably during a workout). If you're tracking it, turn the timer on after your warm-up & before your cool-down so you get a more meaning full number. I like to track time above, in & below my training zone but average hr is good for steady-state or tempo workouts.

Sooo, am I understanding this right, to drop resting heart rate the best training is 90+ minutes of cardio endurance, what maybe 3 times a week? Something like that? I don't know why I'm asking ;)

Well, you could, but why? I would do endurance training if I wanted to do an endurance event. It's a huge time investment, makes one vulnerable to injury & can supress the immune system. But I'm still an endurance addict.

Couch potatoes & light exercisers usually see a drop in their resting heart rates with a regular commitment to exercise. But I don't think that's your situation.

Debra: An endurance addict??? I fear I might be one of those also! ;-)

I started monitoring my resting heart rate for the heck of it. Not when I wake up, cuz I rarely remember.... but just when I'm out and about. It has dropped from the 80's to upper 50's to low 60's. So, I would say endurance training is a big factor.

I had to get an oximeter (to test oxygen levels) for other use and it also checks pulse rate. I get a kick out of testing my own levels. Pretty silly, don'tcha think?

Just to make sure everyone knows what an endurance addict Cleda is:

She's done AIDs rides in 2001 & 2002. She's ridden countless centuries (100 mile rides), both unsupported & organized. Next weekend she's going to tackle a DOUBLE CENTURY - yes that's 200 miles in 1 long day! The running equivilent is a 50 mile trail run.

So yeah, she's hooked on endurance training. (I think she's started her taper or she wouldn't have time to visit here!)

GOOD LUCK CLEDA!
