Best Laptops

I am in the market for a good laptop but I don't know which brand is the best value for money. I am thinking of a Dell or a Compaq but I am not sure of either. Please help me decide on one that will give me bang for my buck. Thanx a lot.

I love my Sony Vaio. I'd stay away from Dells (I've had them at work and have had BAD luck.)

At work, I use an IBM Thinkpad and it works pretty well (and is small!)

Hi Lily,

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop and love it. HOWEVER, the hard drive went bad after 5 months and I had to install a new drive and all the os software provided by Dell. It wasn't fun and even though the warranty covered in-home tech support, Dell wouldn't come out because they deemed this situation easy for the consumer to handle. I'm not sure if tech support with other manufacturers would be any better.

It really depends on what your needs are and how you plan to use it. Are you looking for a desktop replacement, a second computer, is portability important? etc...

Here are a couple of websites that have reviews which might help with your decision.

www.pcworld.com

Good luck!

I think buying a laptop is tricky. We have an HP we have had for 4 years with very little problem. Then DH bought a Sony Vaio and took it to Iraq. The sound card quit working right away. We bought it less than 6 months ago. Well he had quite a few problems. Lastly someone stepped on it so that is another story not covered under warranty. He bought an IBM think pad and that seems to be working ok. I guess I am not much help here. One of our earlier desktops was a compaq. It was in the shop the first few months but then worked great and is still in my daughters house for grandchildrens use. We have had a dell desk top for a couple of years and had no problems. Good luck choosing one.

I second the previous thoughts on Dells. I replaced mine with an Averatec E1200. I chose this computer based on the fact that it is miniscule and nearly weightless, cheap, and with great features. I had never heard of the brand, and in fact the guy at Best buy tried to dissuade me from buying it, but one year out I'm very satisfied. I hear great things about the Sony Vaio and (of course) Apples. I agree with the previously mentioned websites being good. Consider buying online--I got a great deal.

I think alot of what you buy in a computer is the guts .
There are better parts and cheaper ones
What type of hard drive.
What type of mainboard.
I am not into it like i used to be. I used to keep up on dvd, video cards, chipsets.
Like AMD or Pentium not celleron.
I say go for a litthe more expensive laptop.
I have a 91 or 9300. Dell and it seems to work fine so far. It is at work so i keep it backed up.
I don't think any of the support is great like it used to be.
Gateway at one time was the best, now they stink. I am not thirilled over Dell if you can get someone that speaks English.
They all want to charge you an arm n a leg for a question.

I went for lots of memory cd dvd combo and the slots....
Good luck and hopefully you don't get a lemon.

We have HP laptops, the pavillion series. Very fast, good guts to it, compact and inexpensive. Very good quality. Hope this helps.

I have had my HP Pavillion Z7000 Laptop for 2 years now and it is great!!! No problems at all. I would definitely recommend HP's higher end Pavillion line. Otherwise, I would direct you to a MAC. Another incredible machine.
