Barbie Dolls

So I went to Toys R Us the other day to find a Barbie for Aiden's friend who is having a birthday party tomorrow. She is turning 3, like my son will be soon :)

Anyway, I was perusing the dolls and much to my dismay, there were barely any I deemed appropriate, much less for a three year old. All the outfits on these dolls were supposed to be trendy or whatever, but half of them were practically naked.

What's up with this? Granted, maybe I've been under a rock, but I really haven't had the chance to glance over these dolls of late...and people wonder where little girls are getting these image issues from?

I have boys, so I may be wrong, but aren't Barbies for older girls? Not 3 year olds? Or am I showing my age?? LOL! I also don't think kids assign image issues to the dolls, their parents do. So if the parent doesn't make a big deal, I doubt the girls will notice. (again, I only have boys, so I may be wrong- all this is said in a nice way:) )

I didn't buy my daughters any Barbie dolls. Over the years, they have received a few as gifts. When they were younger, I would buy them the Kelly dolls with all the accompanying paraphernalia. I think Kelly is Barbie's little sister or illegitimate child. Ha-Ha. By the time my older dd became interested in Barbie, she hardly played with dolls; preferring instead to play games or make crafts. My 8 year old twins still play with dolls. They choose to play with their Bitty Babies, Madeline dolls and dollhouse.

My DD has tons of Barbies, most of which were gifts. Sometimes I go in her room and she's bound them with black ribbon, gagged them with Scotch tape and they're hanging upside down from her desk chair. It's a little.... odd:p

But yeah, I would say Barbies are for older girls, not 3 year olds. Not that that excuses their skimpy outfits, mind you. Come on, Deb, don't you dress like that? Isn't that reality?;)

LOL! Okay. So 3 and up can't be trusted on the box. I don't know. I loved Barbies from quite a young age. I guess I'll go back under my rock now ;)

I bought one for my 3 yr old niece. It was ballerina barbie. She was appropriatley dressed. At least to me!

Oh Deeebbieee! I could really use a few more Barbie-sized scarves for my mini-snowman fund raiser event. A few of the "skirts" should work. Please send them this way. Shelley has kindly offered her collection of Barbie shoes.

Yes, there is a lot of inappropriate Barbie clothes out there, but there is also some cute stuff. The ones that really makes me cringe are the Bratz dolls. They were outlawed in my house until we received 5 at a birthday party. Now, it's out of my control (a fight I decided not to continue). I'll take Barbie's out of proportion body over the pouty attitude oozing out of those Bratz dolls.

This reminds me that the Project Rungays are blogging about the Project Runway Barbie Challenge from season 2. This was where the designers had to design an outfit for Barbie. I should have purchased Barbie wearing the winning design and sold it later on ebay. Live and learn.

Well, as a Mom of 3 girls there are some really hideous toys out there!! I absolutely hate the Bratz dolls & until Christmas (my sister bought them!) my kids had NONE. My girls prefer the Princess Barbies (Belle, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty) & they are *much* prettier Barbies. If you're looking for ideas for a 3yo girl, let me know. My 3 1/2 yr old likes a lot of the *older* girl stuff, but she has 2 big sisters to follow (an 8 & almost 6yo). She is loving the Littlest Pet Shop toys, Polly Pockets, along w/ puzzles, books, and anything w/ horses!!

When my DD was young it did not matter what the Barbie's wore when she got them, they all ended up naked, with their hair cut off in the bathtub. We had a basket by the tub just for the naked Barbies. I did not spend a lot of money on Barbie clothes. She never used them!

Jess - I just looked at your pictures. You are so cute and have such a beautiful family!!!!:)

We only have a few Barbies and they are all princesses and have beautiful dresses. I'm hoping that we never receive Bratz dolls! My dd also loves Littlest Pet Shop and Polly Pocket items (she's 4 1/2). My Little Pony is big, too.

Thanks, Erica! My girls love princesses too. That's my almost 6yo's goal, to be a princess when she grows up. I was hoping we wouldn't get Bratz, but my sister just got what was *popular*. When my dd opened it, she looked at me & started to say, but Mommy doesn't like.... (and I just hushed her & told her it was ok!).

Those Littlest Pet shops are so cute & at $4 or so a piece, not too bad of a gift. We have bins full of Polly pockets!! I'm thankful that they love games, Go Fish, Old Maid, and Uno are favorites around here!

LOL! Did she play with Shell's daughter? hahaha. I finally did find a Barbie at the stables that is really cute and has some fun accessories. Hopefully we'll make it to the party today if naptime doesn't kill it for us :)

My daughters have loved Barbies from 3 years on. I do not think at that age they care what they are dressed like it is teaching them dressing, mixing and matching, fixing their hair, For their 5th Birthday Party it was a Barbie Party and everyone was to bring a Barbie I went to an old antique store and found some old ones still in boxes for next to nothing. My daughters have danced with them, slept with them. Let's see they have taken dives down the stairs in their vehicles, in laundry baskets, they have had hair cuts. They go on road trips with us stay overs at Nana's. They only have had 1 boy Barbie and they have dismissed him. Personally as a child I had a chest full of Barbie Body Parts, no kidding, I use to tear them apart. I was a tomboy then. I guess you can't look at it as indescent. Look at it as them using their imagination for creating their own look for thier doll or think of it as them being a fashion designer. Barbie movies and books are good as well.

Whatever happened to Skipper? The one with the flat chest and the freckles? I loved her!
But I remember being a naughty little girl and chewing the feet off my Barbie and my sisters Barbies! Oh we had "PJ" too, off with her feet as well!:) I don't remember my Barbie dolls ever wearing clothes for very long either, you always stripped them off and then started applying "make-up" on them or cutting their hair!!
My best friend and I would take Barbie and Ken and have them, well you know "make babies!" All this at the tender age of 8!
