Anyone had vertigo?

Hi Nancy,

I just took my husband to the doctor for this about two weeks ago. He gave him a prescription for Meclizine (25 MG tablets) to help with the symptoms, but told him that it was viral and would go away on its own. Someone else in my husband's office has it too and his was so bad he ended up going to the hospital.

I ended up driving my DH to work for several days. He was feeling much better after about 5 days.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

Thanks so much Noelle!! That's great news! My DH just bought me some Bonine. The active ingredient is Meclizine 25 mg.

Hi Nancy,

You didn't polish off a bottle of vino right before that happened, did you? ;) :7

I experience vertigo a handful of times a year. Sometimes I am sitting or standing motionless and the room begins to spin; other times, I may be climbing or descending stairs, and I feel completely out of balance and fear I am going to fall. Mine usually only last a few minutes per episode. It's disorienting but is not typically accompanied by nausea. I'm not sure what sets it off most times. However, in November, after returning from a cruise, I had on/off vertigo which lasted for several days. That was the one time I could attribute the incident to a specific source. But overall, I haven't considered mine serious enough to seek treatment for it. (If my symptoms lasted for an hour, I'm sure I would feel differently!)

Good luck! I hope it was a one-time fluke.

I will occasionally experience vertigo after I fly from the altitude changes and the pressure in my ear not releasing properly. And I used to get it a lot when I would take Alka Seltzer Plus Cold Medicine. I have no idea why, but I stopped taking it and having had vertigo from a cold since.

I can certainly understand why you are reluctant to leave the house. I hope you are feeling better soon!!

When I bent over, I'd hear what sounded like sails or a flag flapping in the wind (fluids moving around).

Thanks, Cathy. Oh, that's right, I forgot about the bottle of wine I drank. :+ :+

Actually, in the last 6 months I've had a total of about 1 light beer. I've completely lost my interest in alcohol.

Nancy, I saw my practitioner today and he said that I do have a minor inner ear thing going on but again, the majority of my vertigo is the neck thing. He does want me to take the Allegra-D and the reason for me is that he wants to clear up the congestion I have because it's interfering with the work he's trying to achieve in getting my neck/shoulder area to open up. He said the congestion is blocking the signals to my brain he's trying to open up. The way I'm describing it may not make sense but it did make sense the way he stated it. He gave me samples so I don't have to pay for them. I asked him if this could be contributing to others who have vertigo and he said it's possible but my case is a little different. I just wanted to give you that piece of information. It may or may not be a contributor in your case. Hope you're doing better.

Nancy, how are you feeling? I somehow missed this thread before, and I'm astonished now at how many of us have experienced vertigo.

Out of the clear blue sky, I had several severe vertigo episodes (including once while I was driving -- scary scary scary, had to pull over and call my DH) about 5 years ago. DH took me to the doc, who found no inner ear issues with me so ordered an MRI of my brain to rule out the REALLY awful possible causes. When that came back clean my doc pronounced the diagnosis to be "idiopathic episodic vertigo". Translation, as you know I'm sure: vertigo episodes of unknown origin. Interestingly, my doctor told me he himself had had vertigo, that it tended to come in "clusters", and that I might or might not ever have it again. Anyhow, he prescribed Antivert for me, and it did help. Over the course of the next six months I had maybe a half-dozen episodes of varying intensity, and then it just disappeared and has never returned. I was obsessive about trying to figure out what triggered it, but I never saw any clear pattern at all.

Mama Deb had told me about the OTC Meclizine a while back, and it's good stuff. Needless to say, my Antivert prescription expired eons ago, so I still keep some Meclizine with me at all times because I never know, even after all this time, when an episode might hit me.

I know how horrible and unnerved you feel. Hang in there because it'll be okay! ((((HUGS))))

Yes...I've had it so badly it's awakened me at night. It truly is awful, but I find it happens when I have fluid build up in my ears. I recommend a decongestant. Do you find you have ear or sinus trouble? Some people have this as a chronic ailment...can you imagine? How awful!
