Any bread machine owners around? Need suggestions...

There is one aspect of my eating that I'd like to make more 'clean' and it's bread. I'm not a real huge bread eater but I'd like to make my own whole grain bread rather rely on the store bought kind. My friend has a bread machine she uses all the time and it looks like it's a lot less labor intensive than the traditional way. I've done the traditional way of baking bread but the time it takes is more than I can handle right now.

What do I look for in a bread machine? Are there any features that are really nice to have? Any brand you really like? Thanks in advance!

Hi TK,
There have been several threads on breadmakers and recipes over the past year on this forum including one started by myself about 6 months or so ago. There was a lot of input about features to look for in a machine. I never bought a machine and so I can't help but I am sure if you do a search of this forum you will find a lot of info.

Thanks! Sorry for posting this, then. I should have searched the forum first.:-(

No reason to be sorry. You might get new input. Only suggesting that you will get even more info if you do a search:)

I would look for one that has different sizes of loaves and a dough cycle just in case you are making rolls or pizza dough or something like that. It will blend it and raise it up to the point where you shape it for the last raising.

My bread maker died and I was lent one by a friend who never uses hers. I can see why, it's a Black and Decker All-in-One and the crust setting cannot be changed. I really don't like it - the crusts are way too hard. Just thought I'd warn you. Good luck shopping

Get something that has a delay function and allows you to make whole wheat bread on its own cycle. My sunbeam is very nice, I've had it for over 7 years, but only started using it regularly in the last few months.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I would have never thought you would have a crust selection option. The crust is my favorite part of bread, too. I'll also look for the delay feature. That's definitely something I'd see myself using.

Now I just have to find the room to put the machine once I buy it...

I have a Breadman. I've had it for about 8 years. I use it about twice sometimes three times a week. I rarely buy bread at the market. I've had to replace the pan and paddle due to using it so much. I love my bread machine. It also has different loaf sizes, delay settings and different options for types of bread and crust.

I also have a Breadman and I love it. Mine's just a couple years old and has 3 loaf sizes, 3 crust settings, a whole bunch of bread type settings (white, wheat, fruit/nut, bagel, pizza dough, cake batter, jam, etc). It even came with a little rack you can use for baking bagels in the bread machine. It has served us well - it's a very good machine.

I agree with others - you'll want loaf size options, crust darkness options, and dough-only options. And the time-delay is handy too. If you want to make a lot of bread, you can even get dual-loaf models now, that bake 2 separate loaves side-by-side. :)
