All this talk about Dyson vacuums.......

Just wondering how easy they are to operate? I looked at one a couple of years ago and it looked pretty complicated. It looked like it would be my husbands "dream vacuum" because of all the bells and whilstles -- gee, maybe he'd even want to take over vacuum duty.

I have used Fantoms for years. I understand that Dyson used to work for them and he was the first to come up with bagless technology. Plese tell me it's easier to work than it looks! :)

I think the Dyson is very easy to use. Everything is as easy as pushing a button or pulling a trigger. Push a button to slide the hose and wand out. Push a button to slide the wand out of the hose. Push a button to remove the dust cannister. Pull a trigger to empty it. Etc, etc. It's pretty intuitive. :)

Dyson tried to get one of the major vacuum manufacturers to use his technology, but they all scoffed at him. Until he partnered with a Japanese company and released his brilliant line of vacuums that don't lose suction. Now he's having the last laugh, I'm sure. ;)

Thanks, Emily. I will have to look at it again. DH is a mechanical engineer and I am such a mechanical wimp. I'll bring him with me to the store next time. He's a pretty good judge at my mechanical adaptability .

We have two dogs who both shed and mostly ceramic tile floors. We are building a new home which is also full of ceramic tile and wanted to find a new brand of vacuum. I agree the Dyson is pricey but not as pricey as some of the others, like Rainbows which can sell for as much as $1500.

:)

Candi, have you ever tried Electrolux? I swear by Electrolux. I've had two in my life & I bought them used for about $250 (normally they cost at least $900). But the suction is absolutely amazing! I will never buy another brand.

Just wanted to tell you that Overstock.com has Dyson vacuums marked down, it's a good deal from what I've seen in the stores.

Maximus,

No. I have never tried Electrolux but I bet you have to use a bag, huh?

CurlyQ,

Thanks for the tip!

:)

Yes, you have to use a bag. I can't attest to the "air quality" of the vaccuum, all I know is it picks up all the fur from 2 dogs, & it's the only vaccuum I've ever owned that does.

Candi, if you are shopping for a vacuum the Dyson is the only way to go!!! I LOVE mine...in fact we no longer vacuum in our house, we "dyson". I have three labs(tons and tons of hair...I kid you not) and a house full of hardwood floors, and I have never had a vacuum so easy to operate or work so well. The best part is just as Emily said...just a click and a push here and there. I am not a mechanical person at all, but when the Dyson got all stopped up the other day, I pulled out the instructions, found the problem and everything clicked right back together the way it came apart..I had no problem at all. A truly great product.

I'd like to add one more thing about the Dyson...

We have 3 cats, who supply endless amounts of fur. They also have endless amounts of cat toys. I sucked up a furry toy mouse into my Dyson once. Whoops! But you know what? It didn't kill the vacuum - in fact, it got sucked right into the dust cannister and lodged itself into one of the vortex nozzles. I just had to open the dust cannister (and empty out the dust), then reach in and pull out the mouse. Piece of cake! :) Other vacuums would throw a fit if you tried to suck up a toy mouse.

dpiglet,

You almost have me sold. I have been looking for a new floor cleaner. I have hardwood and ceramic floors. I have one room with carpet and some floor carpets. I've been looking into Orek, Dyson, and the Hoover floor cleaner. Just have to make a final decision.

Emily,

When I first read your post I didn't see toy before mouse  . My first thought was that I would have to throw that vacuum away. I once saw a mouse that had been hacked up by a cat. I wouldn't want to see that again. I'm glad you have had a good experience with this product.

Yep, you won't regret your decision to buy a Dyson! It's the best vacuum I've ever owned!

One small thing though, and I've noticed this because I have stairs in my home... that thing is HEAVY! I didn't realize how heavy until I had to pick it up to carry it up and down stairs.

(Of course, that shouldn't be a problem for all of us muscled Cathe exercisers, right? ;))

Hey Candi, I have a Dyson! I love it, I live in a 900 sq ft apartment so space is limited. I am also very forgetful and the whole changing bags thing wasn't for me anymore because I always forget to order/buy more and never realize it til the old one runs out in the middle of vaccuming. Anyway, I don't own the upright, I have the little compact one that fold away like a robot, I think its called the Telescope or something, its unbelieveable, pulls out to a full canister vac and folds up in a small ball and lightweight too. I ordered off of the Dyson website but I did try and get one at Best Buy first. Since the Telescope had just been announced no stores were carrying them yet but I am sure you can find them at any retailer now so go check them out first see if you like 'em. I have seen a commercial for their newest one with "the ball" tecnology, looks very cool!!!
Good luck.

Here's my two cents, I have the Dyson Complete and, while it does a nice job, I think it is overrated. You can't vacuum small rugs, because the suction is too powerful. It's true the extension hose is 17 feet, but when you are trying to vacuum the stairs, it's like wrestling with an Anaconda. It's retracting as you're trying to go forward. The attachments are "conveniently" affixed to the side of the unit, but always fall off. Unless you have a herd of animals and children (I have a dog and 2 kids), I don't think you need this kind of firepower.

I wish I had saved my money and bought an Electrolux Harmony. Nice and quiet and efficient. I had one for 10 years and loved it.

Owning a Fantom all these years, I love the bagless technology. One more thing I don't have to remember...to buy those darn bags.

That telescoping one sounds cool. I saw it advertised last week in SUnday's adds. We will have stairs in the new house so the weight of the vacuum needs to be a consideration.

Thanks so much for all your recommendations. It's amazing all the things I learn when I come here :7
