ACE PT certification

Curious as to whether anyone is currently studying for the ACE personal trainer exam. I am taking it in February. I ordered the materials a few months ago and they updated all the materials 3 weeks ago. Just my luck! The book they sent me is the 1996 2nd edition but I couldn't exchange it for the spanking new 2003 3rd edition. I wound up purchasing the new addition anyhow because I want the updated information although ACE tells me that the Feb. test reflects the old book. Anyone else in this situation? I must say that I'm glad they updated because the 2nd edition just looks old!

i received my study materials about a week ago. i wasn't going to start until november as i'm taking my last class for my bachelor's degree.

I also got the old book about a 6 weeks ago and I don't want to shell out another $60 or whatever it was for an updated book. Hopefully the testing won't be too different.

I just received the 2003 3rd edition. I was using the older manual which I borrowed from a friend who is an ACE certified PT. I was only through chapter three but have switched over to the new edition. I hope to take the exam in February but now I'm concerned since ACE advised the exam will reflect the older book. I'm not sure what things have been updated so I might read both editions just to be safe. Good luck with your studying and exam :)

If you call ACE they will send you a sheet which lists the major changes made in the new revision. They have added a brand new chapter on Behavior Change and Psychology, Expanded the Appendixes, especially Code of Ethics. Photographs have been updated and each chapter has some updated information reflecting the times ie. core training, dietary information. Also there are updated versions of many of the charts. In talking with ACE, they said that the current exam was written a year ago and takes into account the transition from the old book to the new. Questions using the new book will appear on the test in early 2005. The current test must contain material which is common to both books, if I understand correctly.
The ACE phone number is 1-800-825-3636. If anyone finds out additional information, please post it!

I emailed ACE re: the two editions and this is their reply:

Thank you for your email. The exam has not been updated as of yet to reflect the 3rd edition personal trainer manual. The second edition is valid for studying and preparing for the exam, however, I would recommend studying from the new manual since you purchased it. That way you will have the latest exercise guidelines and most current information.

Jo,
I just started reading the 1st chapter of the new manual...no differences yet. I gave back the older one to my friend so I wasn't able to compare. Looks like Lisa was able to answer this for both of us.

Lisa,
Thanks for passing along the info. I think I'm going to stick with just the new edition rather than read both.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the info! Looks like I should probably invest in the newer book...dang that always happens to me!

Out with the old and in with the new! I am going to use the new addition also. Maybe we could do heel lifts with the old edition!Part 1 is hard...all that physiology and anatomy stuff. Once I memorize all that, the rest of the book should be easier to get through.

I am SO confused!! So, you guys are opting to order the new one rather than use your old one??

Again, I am trying to kick myself in the a#$ to do this and get certified either Nov. 8, but most likely next Feb. I have the 1996 version..it says second edition. It is teel and black with a guys arm on it. Is this what you all have? I also have the Group Fitness Instructor book. Can I use these to study from? It seems like yes, if they are not even basing their test on the new edition? Let me know please if I am missing something. With the cost of the test and the possibility that I may want to take the prep course, I would hate to buy all new materials...
Thanks everyone...
Janice

Janice,
For now, I'm still using the old one...I plan on buying the new one later, but I've spent sooooo much money on videos and DVD's recently that purchase will just have to wait!

Janice,

I'm going to continue using my 2nd edition copy, seeing how the questions are only going to reflect the material in this particular edition. I'll just have to make sure I take the exam before 2005. :) But I am shooting for February also. They don't test in St. Louis as frequently as they do other cities. We're lucky if they show up twice a year.

Good luck everyone!
