A new book for all the cardio haters

Well, I think it depends on the type of cardio. I agree that low intensity cardio, while great for your heart, does nothing to help you lose weight. Now high intensity intervals are a whole'nother story. That really gets my weight off.
I think his program would work for people who are doing NOTHING right now, becuase they are adding exercise to their life. And it may even help someone who switches from walking to weight lifting. He seems to completely ignore the health benefits of cardio which is disturbing. He is focusing only on weight loss.

Interesting. Did you catch Larry King Live a couple of nights ago? He did a show about living longer. All of his medical expert guests recommended more weight lifting and less cardio as a means to decrease bodyfat. As far as cardio, they said 30 minutes for three days a week was enough. It was an interesting show. I didn't catch all of it because I was busy doing other things. That statement caught my attention though.

If only!!! Listen, if this were true I'd be ALL OVER IT;) . I've tried weight loss via weight lifting and I formed lovely muscles that were hiding under a layer of fat. I absolutely must do cardio, and believe me when I tell you, if anyone could find a way to get out of cardio, it'd be me. I HATE it;(

LOL Oh, I so agree. I just went and read the transcript. I think it was wishful thinking on my part. The panelists agreed that people should add resistance/weight training in addition to their cardio versus just doing cardio only.

It is still VERY important to do cardio for various HEALTH reasons - most importantly, for heart health!!

I ordered the book from Amazon and it is scheduled to be delivered today. I will certainly pass along any interesting facts or ideas.

I lost 35 pounds in a year doing cardio alone. I understand the need for resistance training as well and have incorporated that into my workout but I still do cardio for heart health. I also want to be able to walk up a flight of stairs when I'm 80 and not die. Case in point, I go to a boot fitness boot camp. One of the instructors, who I am currently dating, made fun of my Cathe workouts. He only does 1 day of cardio for about 20 minutes. Right now he is more interested in building his biceps. I challenged him to do a Cathe dvd with me but of course he avoids the challenge. Yesterday at boot camp we did drills running up and down a big hill. He started off with me and quickly fell behind. I am 45 and finished 4th behind 2 - 20-something guys and a 25 year old girl. My "friend" who is 2 years younger than me finished well behind me as did many other younger people. That goes to show you that doing cardio makes you more fit overall.

I believe the current ACSM recommendation is to do at least 30 minutes of cardio a day on most if not every day of the week.

I feel the best after a workout that was cardio. I like the energy it gives me and how my lungs feel. Not to mention, the really good sweat. I wouldn't give it up totally.

Good for you, Jane!

I haven't been put to a test like that, but I do know that I used to have trouble keeping up with a friend of mine when we went on walks...she would take these long strides and walk really fast, and I'd be lagging behind, so out of breath, I could barely carry on a conversation with her. Now, when we get together, I'm right there with her, yacking the whole time! We've even added some pretty good hills to our route. I don't think I could have ever gotten that with just weight training.

Thanks TeTe!

The boot camp thing has really pushed me in terms of cardio capacity. We done some really hard stuff that includes lots of running. We run with fire hoses, pull tires, run with camo boxes with weights in them. They have this area that they call the "bowl" that has hills on both ends and dips in the middle. We do tons of running in that "bowl". It's killer but a great workout!!
