Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 7/24

We did a hike yesterday, 7.5 miles and around 3000 feet elevation gain. peak was about 6000 feet. It was lovely , a little busy as the day went on while on our way out. nice up high in a light breeze and gorgeous views 360 degrees. but coming back down thru the trees, the flies were ferocious. it's the one drawback about summer hiking. temps were higher there than forecast. a tough workout. I have never been able to go downhill very well. my feet slide out easily, lug soled boots or not. so I actually go uphill easier than down. that slows me down so I'm basically fly bait!. no repellants work on flies as far as I can tell, and it's too warm to wear long pants and sleeves.

Deb, hope you like the phone. our iphone will be paid off in 2 years. don't have an actual contract... you pay the phone off interest free over the course of 2 years. we liked the way the phone, ipad, ipod all work together in the same way. I don't need 3 different systems to keep straight. no matter what phone you get, in 2 years there will be new features. the iphone works way better than the droid razr we had before., but I'm not a heavy duty user.
Lynda, that's why I think it's unlikely a Derm will be able to tell me anything specific. between the shampoo, an anti frizz gel, and 2 kinds of hair color & developer, there must be 100 obscure chemicals listed. so I don't have high hopes, and as long as I'm improving I may be satisfied. we get exposed to so many things!.
sorry, I haven't read most of yesterdays posts yet.

Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not being in the loop lately. My DM went home yesterday and I'm not happy about it. I think that she should have gone back to the rehab center again after spending a few days at the hospital because her sodium went down again. I volunteered to cook for her and I'm doing some research on renal diets and also one that has to deal with her diabetes. Any suggestions?

No dialysis at this time thank god. My back is better and went spinning yesterday instead of running, I wanted to avoid the pounding. Karina came over and today I did spinning again. I will be visiting my DM tomorrow after I do bodypump and taking some home cooked meal for her to enjoy over the weekend. My DH and I are going to Temecula for a long weekend, we need to get away. We both need to get away.

Diane Sue, sounds like you had a great time on your vacation.

Valerie, my DD uses cetaphil products for her whole body. I love their soap bar and use their body lotion.

Judy, my 4DS DVD has never been used. I need to change up my workouts and will be trying this. The gym is also offering a new class called Pound. I need to research it before I go.

Lori, that is a great workout!

Deb, we have been with Verizon for years and are very happy with our plan. We have I-phones and we usually just buy them.

Lynda, what are you reading at the moment?

Josie

Today I did Ice Chiseled Lower Body Basic Mix 6, main, blizzard blast, shoulders, and core. 95 minutes. 591 calories. That is it for today. I have some cleaning and giving Gertie a bath to take care of today.

Valerie, it is hard o find any product without a huge list of ingredients. Even the 100% pure skin care products and Tarte have log lists. But, I do know certain ingredients that seem to bother when I go over ingredients n different products. I am sure I have no clue what all of tem are though.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did both Sweat workouts (approx. 45 min.).

Deb, I'm not that sad about not doing the Live workouts. If they don't stream properly, it's just annoying and not worth the money. The tech guy came, and of course, it worked fine. But he told me to switch to Safari (I was using Google Chrome to airplay), and if that doesn't work, he will come again to give the Apple TV a wired direct cable to the router. If that doesn't work, the hell with it. I hope you like your new phone even if it is a bit pricey.

Josie, maybe Lori will have some suggestions on cooking for diabetics. That's very kind of you to offer to cook for your mom, especially since it sounds like a lot of driving back and forth. That is very good news about the dialysis. I'm reading a novel titled Sweetbitter about a young woman who travels to NYC and gets a job in a very upscale restaurant. It's okay. Before that it was All Things Cease to Appear by Elizabeth Brundage, which was pretty intense, but several implausibilities IMO.

That sounds like a very rigorous hike, Valerie. Is the Cetaphil a baby shampoo? I vaguely remember using it on my sons when they were little.

Lori, I should be a better fan of Walmart, since it is my older son't biggest client with HP. I go there every now and then, mostly for big ticket items when they offer the best price. Otherwise, I just don't like all of the cheap stuff made in foreign sweatshops I see there.

Judy, there are definitely parts of Indiana that are very beautiful. I have been to Bloomington several times and the University there is wonderful.

Diane Sue, that is a long premix. I guess that is why I haven't done any of the Blizzard Blasts.

Josie the hospital likely has a diabetic educator on staff. she should be able to point you at programs nearby where you can get information or take classes. type 2 is so common. so are renal complications. Does your mother have an Internist or a renal specialist as her primary care doctor? IMO FP's & GP's are not usually up to the task. Is someone doing blood glucoses regularly on her? If she needs a special diet, I would expect the physicians office can give information on it or suggest classes.

we did a ride this morning, 25 miles now I am TIRED. I think tomorrow will be a day off.

yes the cetaphil is a "baby wash and shampoo". it's free of several ingredients that are common in skin products. I don't have a problem with any that I know of for certain.
I use cetaphil products for washing my face, lotion, cream plus now the shampoo . I'm making a list of the chemicals all products. wow, it is a long list.

Good evening ladies!

This morning was SB Butt Lift followed up with Hamstrings on Ball. Both great workouts. The hamstring workout is amazing. This was my only workout. Had an all day meeting that started early today and continues tomorrow but at one our restaurants. Starts at 8am and the restaurant is 1 1/2 hours from me. Ugh. Will be leaving early and coming home late so tomorrow will need to be my rest day for sure.

My newest fitness purchase is a battle rope. It came in today and I am so excited. My workout area is long enough to accomodated. I bought a 40ft 1.5inch rope. In researching this seemed to be the best fit for me just starting out. For those that are unsure why I have a 40ft it is because you anchor in the middle so now you have a 20ft rope in each hand. If you Youtube battle rope workouts you will get the complete picture.

Judy...glad you liked Strong Back. It is a great one and combined with Old School Arms no wonder you passed on Triceps. Her high rep workouts are amazing.

Diane Sue...I wish I could be more organized with my workout information. I do not save anything. When I was doing P90x and STS I recorded my weights but that was the last time. I know I should but I just do what feels good at the moment. Been a long time for me too since I burnt 700 or more calories in a workout. I'll have to say since I started with Barre and High Rep workouts I find that I am working out less time than what I did a year ago with not as much cardio and I love the results. This structure seems to be working well for me.

Deb...congrats on the phone! You will love it. My son loves his. I have a new respect for Jessica Smith. Some of her workouts on Youtube can be really tough! I always thought of her as kind of a beginner to intermediate instructor. Boy was I wrong. I'll have to try the flabby arm workout. :). I will also let you know some of my favorites. Although the one I am loving right now is a dvd.

Lynda...Hoping the tech guy has things working for you. Don't blame you to drop it if you go thru everything and it still is not working. Very fustrating. We have a Super Walmart and we do most of our grocery shopping there. I do not buy our protien there though. It is either through bertuccis or BJ's.

Valerie...well the hike sounded great until the flies. Today's ride I bet was great. It sounds like cetaphyl works for you all around!

Josie..I would recommend seeing a nutritionalist. When I first was diagnosed I scheduled an appt. and it really helped me see things clearly. As far as meals I limit carbs/sugar whenever I can. I really am a very bland eater and my diet reflects it. I like protien, veggies and a little starch for a meal and I very rarely use any sauces. That is pretty much it. Of course I balance things out with dairy and fruit but very boring. As far as recipes I will not be able to help because I do not cook and pretty much will do whatever I can to get out of cooking!

Caitlin...hope your move is going well.

Have a great night all!

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, but a nice day, a fun lunch with my niece and good time at agility class with Kylee. It was really hot in class...I stopped a few minutes early. The glass guy came and took the leaded glass frames with him and will repair at his shop. He said about a week and a half. In the meantime we have to paint the wood all around where they will be re-installed. We are having him put tempered safety glass (a quarter inch) right in front of the leaded panel for security purposes.

Diane Sue, I do like the phone but it will take a little time getting used to it. Mostly the size...its a lot bigger than my old LG phone, about the size of John's iPhone 6s. I have never tried Amazon Prime music...can you download on to a phone or iPod and keep the songs? Where do you give Gertie her bath?

Valerie, nice hike! Scary on the downhill part though. :). Ugh, flies! Yes, same deal with the phone, no contract, and it's paid off in 2 years, no interest. I am still having sticker shock though.

Josie, glad your Mom is doing better, but I can see how you would want her to go back to the rehab place for a few days before going home. Do they have some type of visiting nurse program where she lives that you can arrange for the first few days? Maybe give you peace of mind and your Dad a break.

Lynda, at least you have someone on site that can give you options to improve the streaming.....otherwise the Cathe people are not that helpful, they told me to get up my service....it really was not necessary. The low quality works fine and I have no issue with it being blurry or anything like that.

Lori, yes, it sounds like today is a good day to have as a rest day. "Battle Rope"? that sounds scary...I need to go to YouTube!

Hi Judy!

Not sure what is up for today, I want to weed the flower beds before they get taken over by weeds. One thing a draught will do is keep the weeds down. :)

Take care,

Deb, yes you can download the songs. I download the ones I really like so they are in my music. They have workout music that I used when I was doing fitness blender workouts. Loads of choices. I bought a bluetooth speaker that I use. Gertie just walks into the shower and I use the handheld shower head. I think she somewhat enjoys it now. She used to try to go to the crate when she saw me setting up. Yesterday she was in the bath waiting while I went to get towels and cookies.

Lori, it probably does not make a huge difference if you track everything. I find it is nice to go back and see what I was doing when I was noticing results. I find switching workout types periodically helps a lot. One of the ways I first saw results I was doing 3 weeks of Pure Strength followed by Two weeks of Maximum Intensity Strength and Body Max. I am better at endurance and high rep than I was. I used to dread high reps.

Josie I assume your mother has a home blood glucose meter. usually they are free from her primary care docs office, ( at least that's how it was only a few years ago) but she will need test strips and plan on running tests and recording results on a schedule that suits her doctor. . insurance will cover most or all of the cost. If there isn't a testing schedule set up, there needs to be, whatever data her doc wants to work with. some meters record everything for you, some are simple. every few months she needs to have a hemoglobin A1c done. it's a blood test that shows overall blood glucose control over the long term. since she is having some renal problems, those levels should be retested on a regular basis too. Is she capable of doing blood testing herself? if not, someone should be doing it for her. regularly scheduled lab followups .

Deb, we all got used to the 2 year contracts and discounted prices on the phones. I was not thrilled with the phone cost either but seems like most smart phones are in the $500-650 range. I'm happy with my iphone.

For us, hiking fairly early in the morning works best. sometimes it's a long drive. still, try to be on the trail at 8 or before. we had no issues with flies on the way up, but afternoon after it heats up, the fly levels get obnoxious. I have tried every repellant known, and nothing works on flies IMO. mosquitos are less of an issue for us, and repellant does work with them. if I could go faster downhill it would be better but it's a bit like dancing for me..... my feet get tangled up and I skid if I try to go too fast. this was a long drive. we started up about 8, got to the top 11-ish. started back down about 11:45. got back to the car at 2:45, so takes me almost as long to go down as up. sometimes I wear hat, long sleeves, pant legs going down. the flies bite. I get welts from them. awful things. they are around for about a month when it's warm. usually not a problem in clear areas where there's a breeze, but in trees OMG they can be awful.

Lori a battle rope?? will have to look at youtube.

day off for me at least for now. need to do some garden work . maybe an upper body session later. my legs need a rest day.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live PHAT 2 (45 min.). No problems at all, so maybe it's just the shift from Google Chrome to Safari that has made a difference. I will keep using Safari as long as it continues to work this well.

Wow, Lori, that's a lot of meeting time! I will have to look up the battle rope too. Sounds like something marines would do in bootcamp training. I have not really explored my Jessica Smith dvd set. I should take another look at what I have. I bought a set right before ICE came out and, of course, immediately switched to my new Cathes.

Diane Sue, Gertie sounds like such an obedient lover of a dog. Bathing Max must be done OUTSIDE because he thinks it's a big game. I feel like I should wear a full-length rain suit as well.

Deb, we really need rain here too. Kim is worried that he won't get any second cut hay. He is not selling what he has left of his first cut and there are some very unhappy horse people. But he needs the hay for his own animals.

Valerie, I bet the early morning is a lovely time to hike. Flies just seem to be so persistent once they find you. I remember going crazy when we went canoeing in northern Minnesota one year. I felt like whacking them with my paddle.

I made this really easy recipe last night that turned out to be delicious--baked sausages and green grapes, finished with a balsamic vinegar sauce in the pan juices and butter. Ina Garten--from her Foolproof cookbook. It sounded weird, but I trust her.

Today I started with Ice Boot Camp Circuit Blizzard blast with the warm up, 17 minutes, 95 calories. I then did Ice Low Impact Sweat all step (#2 and blizzard blast) no warm up, 33 minutes, 246 calories, avg. heart rate 124/ max 157. I then did muscle meltdown back giant sets, 22 minutes, 107 calories and finished off with Amy Bento Abs and Stretch, stretch 2, 16 minutes 35 calories. Total time was 87 minutes and calories burned 483.
Muscle Meltdown back 3 giant sets 5 exercises 12 reps each
one arm row 30; 30; 30
pullover two 20's, 20's; 20's
one arm wide row 25; 25; 25
one arm pullover 17.5; 17.5; 17.5
deadlifts 2 30# dumbbells 30's; 30's' 30's

Lori, I have seen a lot of workouts using the ropes. I am always a little apprehensive about buying new equipment and how much I will use it. I have a slingshot that I purchased when I purchased when I got the Bosu Explode workouts. I have hardly used it for anything. I need to do searches and see if I can find something to use it for. I have two because the first the sent was missing one of the belts so they sent me the whole thing a second time and did not want the other back. Those workouts are different and fun. I did have to improvise a bit on the one that had you using two BOSU s. I drew the line at purchasing a second one for 1 workout.

Valerie, it seems like flies will sit on you and bounce off with the insect repellant. I have no clue what a person could use to keep them off. That would really aggravate when you are putting in effort and they are pestering.

Lynda, Gertie stands there and puts out her head so you can massage her head and backs of her ears while shampooing. I had an English Bulldog that loved water hoses and sprinklers. She was near impossible to bathe. She would dive bomb the sprinklers and try to eat the water. Our other dog learned to love the shower too. I think she enjoyed the attention. I would sing to her. She had allergies every year and I would have to use special shampoo the vet gave me and keep it on her for 15-30 minutes 3 times a week. I would read to her and that is when I started singing to her. This made it easy because she liked it when I would read out loud. When I had the two dogs the first to get a bath would bounce around after and taunt the other as if saying look at me, I got a bath. Then they would wait and watch for the other to come out and they would roll and run all over the house. It was pretty funny.

I think I will be moving around August 3rd, and I can't work out with the boxes in the living room. That bothers me a bit. I do have my DVD's, athletic shoes and weights packed. I hope everyone is doing well.

Caitlin, the 3rd isn't too far away. When I moved we had to store stuff so I had most of my dvds in two cases and the rest put together in a tote. It took two large totes just for the workouts, ankle weights, tubing, bands etc..

I searched the internet today form my slingshot to see if I could find exercises. It is put out by twist conditioning. Apparently that is now a fitness facility called Twist. The slingshot online that I kept coming up with was a completely different apparatus used for strength training. They had one for 119.00 on Perform Better Australia and I saw some pictures of them using it for some lateral training along with the partner running. It fastens to another person by one of the belts or as in the Bosu Explode workouts they attached it to a piece of equipment or pole and would jump on and off the Bosu against the pull. It has a long stretchy band in the middle.

Good evening ladies!

As I had planned today is my rest day. I am exhausted! What a long day. Fortunately, it was a really great marketing meeting and a good portion of it was our new fall menu. There was a lot of sampling of new menu items which we started at 8am! I did do a quick battle rope workout to try it out. Was only 10 minutes and boy what a workout. I think I will use these as finishers. No more than 20 minutes at a time. My husband thinks I finally went over the deep end. My son loves them and can't wait to try them out.

Deb...yeah on getting the glass fixed! Once done you are going to say you have no idea why it took so long to do. I have some projects in my house that could be really easy to fix yet I do not. Will do when I feel like it.

Diane Sue...Gertie sounds adorable! Very sweet. I think I will enjoy the ropes as long as I keep them to short intense workout. I have been doing a lot of research and feel I bought the right size and length for me. The only purchase I do not use as much as I would like is my spin bike. I love it just do not use it as often as I thought I would.

Lynda...I am curious to what JS set you have. Max sounds a lot like Chester did when it was bath time! Suppose to have some rain tomorrow. We need it.

Valerie...when my son and I hike we like to get out there early. Love being out side working out first thing in the morning. So relaxing. I received many testing meters through my primary over the years and a copay on the strips. I test and keep a record and go for my A1C's twice a year. I am in really good control so twice a year has been fine for now.

Caitlin...good luck on the move. 8/3 with be here before you know it and you'll be back to your workouts!

Judy...I caved and ordered SB new Strength and Stretch DVD. It is a 2 set DVD that was selling for I think $18.99 and if you ordered within 48 hours it was only 9.99. Can't beat that! The stretching and flexibility really appealed to me. This is so not me but I would like to give it a whirl. I know I really need to add more stretching and flexibility workouts so hoping this will do it.

Josie...hoping your mom is doing well now that she is home.

.

Good morning,

No workout yesterday, lots of errands. It seemed like we were in and out of the car a million times.

Diane Sue, I will have to try the Prime music. I played around with trying to get my playlist from the old phone to the new one with no success. :(. Technology can be so frustrating, as we all have experienced. We use the basement laundry tubs to bathe the dogs. When I take off the collar of one, and pick it up to go downstairs, the other slinks away and hides. Neither one fights it at all, but they certainly do not like it. That slingshot workout sounds strange...another person running?

Valerie, wow that hike sounds tough! I can see why you would want to rest your legs for a day. I would try Googling a natural fly repellent...see if there is anything out there. There has to be something they don;t like...but then again....think of what they do like...Yuk! :)

Lynda, great news on the streaming! Just a change of browser....who would have thought? LOL picturing you bathing Max in a rain suit and him running around. That dish does sound strange when reading it, but if you trust a cook's recipe, that makes all the difference. Did you use Kim's sausage?

Caitlin, good luck with the move. It might be good for you to have a complete rest week or so....I am sure the move itself will be a workout!

Lori, I looked up those rope workouts on YouTube....yikes! that looks hard. It seems like you would need a lot of space to do that. It must have been fun taste testing all those new menu items. :).

Hi to Josie & Judy,

Anyone have any fun plans for the weekend?

Take care,

Debbie, my dogs did not care for baths at first but when they realized they got treats it was okay. Then they just started to like being rubbed and pampered I guess. Gertie won't eat the cookies till she is done. She refuses now. That sling shot has two people with a belt and a long fabric covered tubing between. When one runs past the other it causes resistance, the other then tries to pass. I guess it helps attain speed.

Lynda that does sound like an interesting recipe. I have done meat dishes with grapes. I also have used recipes with balsamic vinegar. Recently it was a stew. I really did not care for the vinegar so much and thought next time I would cut that down a bit. Maybe the butter flavor would enhance it though. I have a pork recipe I am going to try that has rhubarb in it. I purchased the stuff. It looked different and I still have rhubarb from the cobbler I made. It is frozen though and it calls for fresh. Sprouts does have fresh right now. I probably should get some.

Hi Ladies,

Thank you Lori and Valerie for your information. My DM does get her sugar tested every day and a nurse came over and evaluated her.
the PT person will come over today, my brother got me the information for her diet and I was able to prepare her food accordingly.
I took it to her yesterday and she enjoyed one of the dishes that I prepared for her.

My DH and I are going away for the weekend, we are going to Temecula we have ticket for concerts on Saturday ( David Koz and David Sanborn) and Sunday ( Chris Botti). The concerts are at the Thornton Winery and are held outdoors. Temecula is only 2.5 hours away for our house and 2 hours away from my parents house. Just in case my parents need us.

I did manage to do all my workouts this week and plan on working out at our hotel. We are staying at Harrah's and they offer a yoga class and a water aerobics early in the morning. My DH will not be joining me because he is not an early person ;).

Have a great weekend everyone!

Josie

Josie that sounds lovely..... outdoor concert at a winery. Enjoy.!
I ended up taking yesterday off. I feel like riding again today. It was warm yesterday and will be again today. mid 80's. that's pretty warm for me so I need to do something early before it heats up. too warm for me to hike, and I am itchy from a bunch of fly bites. humidity is not real high but yes, I'm a heat wimp! we turned the air on yesterday for maybe( ??) the first time this year. it's a lot quieter with the windows closed at night.
Deb, I'm not real sure what attracts the flies so much but they land probably attracted to moisture. I get serious itchy bites that don't show up for a day or two. the only thing that works for me is a clothing layer, and as it heats up that becomes harder to tolerate. I've tried permethrin, DEET, and the latest is picaridin, 20%. there's a repellent using eucalyptus oil but that didn't do as well in testing, and it sounds too smelly to me. most work on mosquitos but don't for flies. cooler temps make it better, and easier to tolerate an extra clothing layer. we don't hike much during "fly time". usually bad only a few weeks on high temp days, but when it's bad, it's awful. some people are bothered way more than others.
And then there's the issue of sunscreen... I will do bug juice, or sunscreen, but not both at the same time. a light clothing layer is a better plan but it gets warm. mostly we curtail most hiking when the bugs are bad as nothing seems to help much.

Hi everyone--

This morning I did live You Can Do Anything for a Minute (50 min.). No problems on Safari, and even with modifications, this is a very good workout for me. I would classify this as a hiit workout even though she does some work with resistance that is definitely metabolic. I like the variety and the 1 minute intervals. FYI Deb, Cathe uses her tubing in this one in case you are still looking for some tubing workouts.

Lori, I forgot to look, but the JS dvds were in a set of 4. Wow--that looks like a tough workout! Your husband must be just shaking his head. I can't imagine doing a tasting at 8 A.M. Hope it was yummy and interesting. A new chef?

Deb, I want to see the new Star Trek film, so maybe tomorrow for that, and then on Sunday there's a cocktail party celebration for the 30th anniversary of Rural Lands, our local land conservation association and environmental education group. Should be fun. Definitely Kim's sausages in that meal.

Josie, that will be a nice respite from all of your recent worries about your mom. Hope it's fun and no emergencies to call you away from some good music and time with your husband.

Diane Sue, my vet friend said dogs shouldn't be bathed more often than every 21 days because it dries out their skin. Of course, if Max rolls in something we have to do it sooner, but he has such a heavy coat it's really a chore, and yes, he loves to play with the hose. I think anything sweet with pork is good. I do a plum chutney with pork tenderloin wrapped in prosciutto that is really good. Of course, this year our plum trees produced nada because of a freeze right about the time buds were emerging. It's going to be a bad year for apples too.
