Workout/rotation advice for husband

Hi everyone!

My husband has put on a few kilos (mostly in the tummy area) and I'm trying to help him burn them off. He is open to doing Cathe videos with me and we completed a round of STS together at our gym which was great.

Unfortunately he has some trouble pushing himself hard; I will try to get him to do HIIT and he gives up pretty early, plus he's a tall, big guy and finds plyometrics difficult. I think getting his bum kicked by a 40+ year old woman (Cathe) is also a little tough on his ego.

Has anything, Cathe videos or other types of workouts, done wonders for the men in your lives? He's a former kickboxer and is probably at a high intermediate level fitness wise. Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Hi Amanda! My husband started doing Cathe with me about two years ago. He can pretty much do all of Cathe's workouts right along with me.:D When we started, he could barely get through the warmups. He was working upper body at the gym but could use no weights at all for leg workouts. I'd say he's advanced now and what makes this even more impressive is the fact that he's 68 and had triple bypass surgery two years ago February! Hope this give your hubby a little inspiration!!:D:D

My DH did an Insanity rotation (he did the whole rotation:eek:). He is tall and got thin around the waist showing lots of muscle definition. He happens to love plyometrics. This is a very difficult/advanced series that I would 'not recommend' doing every day even for an advanced exerciser, because of all the jumping and therefore wear and tear on your joints etc. Just wanted to add this example in there that Hiit can work.

How great that your DH does Cathe workouts with you!!:D Wish mine would:mad:

Have you tried Cathes Xtrain All Out Low Impact Hiit? Even just the floor only premix at first. Then slowly add on longer premixes. Or if he's not very coordinated (with discs or step) increase by doing a double floor only premix.

Cathe's Hiit Pyramid workout might be good by just doing half of the workout (right after airjacks) and also maybe not putting in as much of an effort until he feels he can push harder. Then skipping to the C/D.

T25 a beachbody program might be one to look at. We have it but haven't done any of the workouts yet. Chris Freytag ACE Hiit series looks good too.

HTH!

Hi Amanda. Maybe your husband could look into Funk Roberts. He is an MMA trainer and has over 100 free videos on YouTube . They are not follow along videos but shows you what to do. He's big into total body. 10 exercises time based (ie 45 seconds of work and 15 seconds of rest). Exercises are standard and can be done at gym. Sometimes men are more comfortable with other men. For my husband ...it's an ego thing...lol!

Until some of that weight comes off he may not be ready for any HIIT or plyos. What about the C25k program or cycling? Lots of guys do better with things that aren't choreographed. He might like Jillian better, her style is more old school and 'gym' style, like the kickboxing that he used to do.

Wow, your 68 year old husband is very inspiring! I will definitely mention this to my DH.

Funk Roberts looks right up his alley and I really like his emphasis on legs, which my guy often neglects. Asylum looks great as well, though I agree that it's probably a good idea to work up to intense plyo. Unfortunately we can't run here in steamy, polluted Jakarta, but we can use spin bikes and treadmills. And we tried lo-impact HIIT from Intensity tonight and he liked that enough to push himself (I could tell because he growled at Cathe at one stage! :p).

Thanks so much everyone for the helpful suggestions!
