i need to order one and i am having trouble figuring out which are magnetic only and which are powered by electricity. i tried the ones that are magnetic(console is battery powered) and the only way to increase the resistance is to pedal faster. i want to be able to set the resistance. Any suggestions of info please :)

Jes,
Are you sure you tried the right kind of magnetic resistance model? My husband just bought a Keys magnetic bike from overstock.com
here's the link:

And there are 8 different resistance levels and three programs (manual, plateau, or interval). It's not my favorite cardio b/c I have a hard time keeping myself entertained, but he LOVES it and it's a nice break from high impact cardio for me.
I'll be glad to answer any other questions you have about it. You can always PM if you like.

so it's not plugged in but you are able to choose a resistance level without having to do a specific program?

No Jes it's not plugged into anything (the console takes four D batteries) and you can choose a resistance level from 1-8. There are also 3 preset "routines" that can be applied to any length of time or resistance level, up to 99 minutes. These are interval, manual (where you decide what to do and how long, so it's not much of a routine), and plateau.
The level 8 is pretty difficult, but not impossible. It also has a built in heartrate moniter which is pretty accurate, but I find it difficult to get mine above 150, when with running or most Cathe's I go up into the 170's or 180's sometimes if I'm intervaling.

No problem Jes! Hope you find one that you like! The magnetic ones are great b/c they are so quiet, which should shut up our downstairs neighbors, imagine how much they hate Cathe }( }(
