What kind of puzzle mats to get?

I have noticed that big 5 has some puzzle mats on sale but the package says that they are for protecting your floor and you can put your equipment on them. My question is: Can they also be used to protect your joints? They are about 1/2 inch in thickness and they do have some give when I press on them. The salesgirl had no idea what they could be used for! Has anyone bought puzzlemats that are for floor protection and then used them for joint protection? Can they be used for both? Should I spend the money and get the greatmats one?

Well, I bought them for a different reason entirely! I am going to cover my carpeted floor with them...i wanted a smoother surface to work out on....having to watch my footing so that I don't get caught on the carpet is annoying!

I'm sure if they are softer than the floor that you normally work out on that they will help soften the blow to your joints as well.

Have a great work out!

Hi Maria,

I bought puzzle mats to protect my joints. I work out in my basement on a cement floor and my legs starting bothering me. First I put down indoor/outdoor carpet but that didn't provide enough padding. The puzzle mats I have are 24" X 24" and I have 25 of them put together in a big square. I think they are by York and are made as a floor covering for exercise equipment, but they work great for me.

Diana-I workout in my basement too on the cement floor. Although I don't have any problems with my joints, I am concerned I will very soon. I have a few questions for you:

Do they slip around on the cement when you are moving, jumping or whatever?

Do you find that 25 of the 24" x 24" blocks is big enough?

TIA

I bought my puzzle mats at Costco. I also work out in by basement, I put a piece of carpet over the concrete floor and the puzzle mats on top of that. I've been exercising on them for about 2 years now and this definitely provides enough cushioning for my knees and feet.
