TREADMILL WALKING

Hello; My question to anyone out there is; Is walking on an incline at a very fast pace better or equal to running,(especially for the trimming of the thighs and hips. Also, I keep hearing different opinions on carbohydrates. I hear that they are low in fat and a good form of keeping the weight off (if you are excercising) then I hear that they put the pounds on you?

Running burns more calories then walking. But not a great deal more.I heard that if you walk the same distance as what you are going to run you will burn almost the same amount of calories, it just takes you longer to get around.
I love to jog and that is what I mostly do during the better part of the year.Plus cathe tapes of course.
I am confussed about the whole carb thing to but I know one thing and that is that you should be eating them.Whoever got the idea that it is was o.k to eat bacon and greasy food instead of whole wheat bread and whole grains..which give you energy, must have been smok'in something.I beleive that you can probably cut back on the number of bad carbs that we eat sometimes.Like desserts,, candy, white bread and pasta.Right now I am trying to keep my intake of carbs at around 200g.I feel fine at this number.I don't feel sluggish or tired.
Hopefully I have helped you out a little

Walking on an incline is better than running, coming from someone that does both. If you are training for a marathon, then you must run. But if you are seeking just to cross-train, walk on the highest incline you can at the highest comfortable speed(without gasping for air). It will tone up your legs much more and give you the same, if not better, cardio workout with much less impact and stress on your joints.

Carbs are not bad, especially is your are exercising aerobically relatively frequently. Try to eat clean..cut out the refined sugar, but go ahead and eat the whole grains, fruits and veggies. This whole carb thing really is not of any concern to the average to advanced exerciser not wanting to compete in any fitness competions. I used to live on pasta and white and brown rice and was very lean. Of course, I exercised alot. Well, I got older and got a desk job and decided..no, that pasta and rice was BAD and if I ate it I would get FAT, so I cut it out completely. Ate more veggies. Nothing really happened. So, when I upped my cardio recently, I wanted to eat higher carbs the nights before I ran, so for the hell of it, I threw in pasta on those nights.

All I noticed was greater energy in the AM and i have not gained weight. Of course, if I ate the pasta with my dinner, I did not eat my after dinner snack. So it is all about balance..and eat what you like!! Just don't eat too much of it!! Take Care..Janice

Hi Janice. I'm so happy to read your positive comments concerning you experiences with treadmill walking. I'm a runner, but I simply cannot tolerate the boredom of steady state running on my treadmill. I have to power walk or do walk/run intervals.
When I walk, I maintain a 3.8-4.0 mph pace and keep the incline at 6-8%, arms pumping (all the while, listening to killer music on my portable dvd player.) Cardiovascular wise, I feel like I'm at the low to mid range of my target heart rate...I can definitely carry on a conversation. My legs are getting a good endurance workout.

I would like to continue walking on my treadmill, but I would like to increase the cardiovascular intensity at times to mix it up. I don't want to resort to more interval work though, and I don't think my legs need more hill training. I'm thinking about getting a Powerbelt. Any thoughts?

Oops! I lost track of where I was when I posted last night...didn't realize that I was in the Ask Cathe forum.

I have started a thread in the Open Discussion forum concerning the Powerbelt.
