Training for a Marathon

Has anyone ever trained for a marathon while doing cathe videos? Particularly step videos. My 20 yr old dtr. wants me to register with her to do a half marathon (13 miles). She says I have to run alot to train so I might only get to do step once or twice a week. I hate to give up my daily step routine. Any suggestions on how I can train properly and not give up too much of my favorite step exercises?

Hi Yolanda,

Ideally, your training will have 3 days a week of running--other forms of cardio are great, but I can tell you that nothing will prepare you for running an event better than actually running.

That said, cross-training is HIGHLY encouraged on your off-days, because you want to protect your joints, muscles, ligaments while still getting the benefit of working out. I generally do weights on 2 of my off days, then yoga and pilates on the 3rd (or rest if it's after a really long run--anything over 10 miles). You could do cardio on one of those rest days if you'd like, but it's recommended that you do low-impact cardio to protect your joints, since running is so jarring.

Hope that helps!

Yolanda...I think training for a half marathon you could do step a couple of times a week along with running as I always did that. You could also do Cathe weight workouts as strengthening your muscles will help with distance running.

But for a full marathon I always avoided step during my training. I would use Cathe weight workouts during marathon training as I am now! For me I have to just mostly run for the full marathon training. Now though I will use an Elliptical one day a week...HTH
