Too Much Cardio question for Cathe?

Hi Cathe,

First of all...I want to thank and congratulate you on your new DVDs....they are so awesome! I have been reading a lot about too much Cardio and people actually GAINING weight from exercising too much (more so with cardio not weights)! I really don't understand this and wish I could because then maybe I wouldn't feel badly about taking a day off once in a while! I just don't get how too much cardio--which is supposed to burn calories and fat....can make you gain weight and fat. PLEASE HELP!!

Again, thanks for all you do...you are truly an inspiration!!

Not Cathe here...

But too much cardio can actually burn muscle once you burn through the glucose. That's why combining weight trainging with cardio is the ideal workout for most.

To give you a visual, have you ever known or seen a runner that's flabby? They run 10 miles a day, but have no tone (I even have friends that do this and are still heavy, in fact). They don't do any muscle training all, they're just cardio junkies.

I've been thinking about reducing my cardio too. But since I'm 44 I feel nervous about gaining more weight. I still have 5 pounds to lose.

I'm doing 25 mins cardio (treadmil or eliptical) per day Mon-Fri (at lunch time, in the gym at work) and 45 mins spin class or vesa climber or step mill on Mon or Wed or Fri (not all 3 days, 2 days at the most)

I also do weight on Tue, Th (less than 1 hour) and Sat, Sun (about 2 hrs).

Am I doing too much? I'd love to work less but work smarter

If you think about it, the rotations Cathe does for this web site usually only include one workout per day, either weights one day or cardio one day. I do understand there are a few rotations that include both, but generally speaking, it is either one or the other.

This leads us to the next question? Cathe, what do your actual workout weeks look like? I would love to know!!:)

I don't mean to hjack the thread, but I'd like to add a similar question. I read on these forums that after one hour of cardio, women aren't burning fat anymore, the body won't allow it. If that is true - why are some of Cathe's cardio workouts longer than an hour? Mostly the premixes, I think.
