Tipping Question...

I have an appointment with a new message therapist today. I actually overpaid (accidentally) my previous message therapist, and it was probably construed as a tip.

Do you tip you message therapist?

I always default to tipping, no matter the situation. It's tough since I'm not always in the financial situation to be able to comfortably do so but it's better than to risk alienating people who provide your services. Just my $.02.

I personally despise tipping... I wish things were a set price and you didn't have to worry about whether or not you should tip someone.

My personal philosophy is that I will tip someone who provides a service for me. Hair dressers, massage therapists, nail techs, etc.

There are other situations that are questionable - for instance, my mother asked me the other day if it was wrong not to tip the caterer who lives next door. She made a couple of dishes for my mom to take somewhere else (Mom also picked them up from her house). I told her not to tip. If the caterer delivered the food to the event, set it up, and cleaned up afterward, that's a different story...

I don't know if that's "proper etiquette" but that's what I do.

Margaret: Funny you should ask . I'm a registered Massage Therapist in a Chiropratic Clinic and at a high end day spa. Tipping etiquette and massage therapy is a grey area.

In Ontario, Canada we are governed by the Registered Health Professional's Act who also govern RN's, dentists and chiropractors to name a few. I would never consider tipping my dentist and that's the procedures we were taught in school. That being said I've received a few tips in Clinic and after two attempts at refusing realised it came across as ungracious to those giving from the heart.

Tips are a rarity in clinic but commonplace at the spa (nice surprise to me!). As a therapist I would never expect a tip (I'm just doing my job) but would never refuse one either. How's that for sitting on the fence!

I think you should tip if the person works for someone else because they don't get all the money but if the theraptist runs their own business then I wouldn't think a tip would be necessary.

I hate tipping also. I wish we could just do away with the practice altogether.
