Pentagenarians & Beyond: W/B 8/25

Good Morning. Today I did WS3 One Mile of Motivation for 15 minutes and 108 calories burned. Average heart rate was 108 and maximum heart rate was 148. After that I did WS3 Yoga Strength + Stretch which was 32 minutes and 82 calories burned. Average heart rate with that was 101 and maximum heart rate was 118.

Hello to everyone and have a wonderful day.

good morning. did a fair bit of garden work the last few days. then did Stacked upper body yesterday afternoon. I haven't done much formal exercise the past few days. Deb let us know how the flood event worked out for you.

Yesterday I only did my PT exercises with a 10 minute warm up using Kelly's Raw Cardio Overload 2 without the weight vest and then following through with the exercises. This took me an hour and 2 minutes. They my husband and I went to the church to hang a projection screen and he took me to a nice restaurant downtown for my birthday dinner since my birthday follows on Tuesday. Great scenery. It is in the tallest building overlooking the city. The food was excellent :) Today I went through PT without a warm up and skipping a couple of the moves which I still need to do and that took me 30 minutes. We had church and my grandson is coming for dinner when he gets off work. Tomorrow I have to be at the Heart place for an echo at 7:30 so any exercise will have to be when I get back.

Hi all,

I have not had a chance to get online very much. After the flood waters were cleared, the cleaning started. Awful, awful mess. Lots of stuff tossed, rugs, puzzle mats, etc etc. Good thing that Thursday is trash day here, so we were able to get a lot of stuff to the curb before the trash trucks got here. Still more to go. We were very lucky that the washer, dryer, freezer ended up being ok. I have not checked the treadmill yet. :(...

We went to Erie, Pa on Friday morning. Kylee and I were entered in agility trials Friday and Saturday. I contemplated not going, staying to clean, but John was adamant that we go. We had been looking forward to this for a while. We went with both dogs, however Ike was just there for the ride.

No workouts, but did 15, 214 steps Friday, and 12, 495 yesterday.

Diane Sue, I am so sorry about your daughter's dog, How can people be like that? I bet the person was drunk, and afraid to stop, especially seeing a police car parked there. Happy Birthday! ( early!) Good luck with the Echo.

Valerie, nice that you have your camper back, but that must have been frustrating not getting it fixed correctly. Isn't if funny how you think you can't do without something, but after its gone a while, somehow you don't miss it as much as you thought?

Judy, nice job on all the workouts! I sure hope that you are able to have your work outs cut, with all the people they are losing. Do they ever wonder why that is?

Hi to Carolyn & Lori,

Take care,

Deb I assume you know what caused the leak problem and fixed it? what a mess that must be! good to take a break... maybe it didn't destroy the treadmill. …. letting it dry before checking is smart anyway. if theres a plate over where the motor is, maybe you could open it up to let it dry more easily?

we missed the camper! we were set for a trip. had caulked the roof and skylight, checked for leaks and all was OK. DH drove it a few miles to gas up, brought it home and it rained that night. we realized just those few freeway miles "reopened" the area that was leaking. it turns out there were small cracks in the frame of the skylight that caulk didn't cover . we will do part of the trip we'd planned for june. too late in the season to do all of it but we will see how the weather goes. this RV place is the only authorized service here for our brand of camper but we will try to never use them again.

diane sue best of luck on the echo. Happy Birthday a tad early.

FWIW, we got an idea from the salesman at Subaru about how mice could get in. if you are running the air conditioning and turn the car off, the port pulling in outside air is open. if you set the air to "recirculate " for a few minutes, and then cut the engine, that port will be closed. no idea if that was the reason but its worth a try. easy to do and if it works will solve some long unanswered questions.

Deb, that is terrible that you have had such a mess to clean up. I hope that you find the treadmill still works and the freezer, washer, and dryer are okay. I am sure the break for the agility trials was nice. It doesn't seem you would need a workout with all of the stuff you have been doing. You got a lot of steps in.

Valerie, I am sorry that there is still problems with the skylight. I hope that works to keep mice from getting into your vehicle. I would never have thought of that.

Valerie, I have a friend that is having a lot of problems with her Subaru intermittently not starting. She has had it into the dealer at least 3 times. They cannot find what the issue is. The last thing they said was "it could be rodents"... In your post, you mention mice and the Subaru, was that a starting issue? They never found chewed wires in her case, at least not that they said. I will give her your info on the A/C etc.

Deb we didn't have mice in the engine ( that we know of) , but inside the cabin of the car. they found a route from outside to inside, and we assume it was thru some part of the engine because car was closed/locked but parked outside. we could tell they were there because they chewed up Kleenex.
the salesman suggested setting the air conditioning to "recirculate" ( the little air recirculate arrow?) to be sure the air intake for outside air was closed off . we took his word that this could be an issue. no problems with how the car ran. we set regular snap mouse traps inside the car and caught 5 mice. they had been inside the car less than a week.

the trouble with newer vehicles is everything is packed in so tightly that even with a light, its hard to see anything, look for chewing on wiring? mouse droppings?

we had mice inside the engine compartment of our Ford truck more than once. they got into the cab somehow, and under the seats and in the glove box. mice can get thru tiny tiny openings! in the ford truck they chewed a huge hole in the windshield washer fluid container that needed to be replaced. they chewed up papers in the glove box, Kleenex from the Kleenex box.
we have read that rodents like to chew on vehicle wiring that is coated with some substance that contains soy. we had no food in either vehicle, and except for the windshield washer bucket, they only chewed paper as far as we know. we have windshield washer in the bucket, the commercial stuff, so not "attractive". must have been the plastic bucket itself.

on the truck there were obvious signs of chewed plastic. the bottom of the bucket had a huge hole with chewed raggedy edges. the dealer showed it to us after he pulled it out. we realized something was wrong when no washer fluid sprayed out. we refilled the bucket, but the liquid poured right out onto the ground. It was expensive and complicated to get it replaced. there is not a lot of extra space under the hood to maneuver.

ETA I have read that mice leave a scent trail, so once one mouse gets in, others will follow the same route. especially in late fall, mice look for a warm cozy spot to spend the winter. we are really neat and clean with our cars and vacuum them out regularly, don't leave food crumbs or wrappers in them. doesn't matter, mice still are attracted. but its always the box of Kleenex they go after.

did Pyramid upper body yesterday. Mt biked this morning, about 2 hours. forgot to stop my timer. .

Today I did a premix from Intensity. I did the step segment plus low impact HiiT for 47 minutes and 338 calories burned. My average heart rate was 131 and maximum heart rate was 155. It’s a tough cardio workout, but I enjoyed it.

Deb, I’m glad that you were able to get most of the clean up done from the flooding. Taking a break to go to the agility trials was a smart thing to do.

Valerie, I have heard of several people having a problem with rodents chewing up the wiring in vehicles. We haven’t had problems so far, but my husband’s truck is parked outside.

Diane Sue, I hope that you had a good cardiology appointment.

Hello to Lori and Judy. Enjoy the afternoon everyone.

Today I had my echo and will have to wait on results. I came home and did my PT and then went to lunch with my daughter. She wanted to take me to lunch for my birthday since today is her day off. We went to Hobby Lobby after lunch and I picked up some new decent colored pencils. I am not a fan of working with cheap colored pencils. The results are not the same. Anyway, just trying to do some relaxing things to help the tightness. Tomorrow I have PT at 10 so I should be able to do some cardio before I go. I realized the one new move that they gave me was 3 sets of 10 reps for my right arm and shoulder. For some reason I thought it was 3 reps LOL. So, today I did it right. The PT seems to think that slight bend in my arm is not all arthritis, but the that tight muscle all the way down that is pulling it like that. So, she added a new move. This one I don't have to hold for a timed period. Really, my motivation has been a bit down for workouts. I got my new Kelly's today and will preview to see if there is anything I can do right now. There is a kickboxing workout on one of them. I don't think boxing is necessarily a good thing right now. I am trying to note what pulls out the pain and what doesn't.

Valerie, I hope that will be the end of your problem with mice. Icky that more will follow the others' scent. Nice workout today.

Carolyn, the appointment seemed to go well. I got in right on time, although I do not know why they said come 15 minutes early. I was there 25 minutes early and there was no paperwork or anything to do. It took about 30 minutes. It seems I have mostly done either all of Intensity or that mix with the step and the low impact segments. That premix has always been a favorite of mine.

Good morning,

Still cleaning out the basement, no workout yet, as that area is still a "mess". For those with a sump pump, do you have a "bubbler" installed, which if I understand it right, it takes the water away from the foundation of the house, rather than just dumping it right near?

Valerie, yes, we had a plumber here, and they (again) found roots in our drain to the street and snaked them out as best they could. We need a new pipe running from our house to the street, connected to the main sewer line. Also, need to install a sump pump with a back up. We got a quote, and have been trying to decide to just go with it, or get more quotes. Is your camper ok now?

Diane Sue, Hope you get the results from your ECHO soon. Maybe you should just do the PT exercises and eliminate all other upper body moves? freezer, washer and dryer are all good. I am assuming the treadmill is okay as well.

Hi to Carolyn, Judy, & Lori,

Take care,

Deb it looks like camper is OK now. we will probably not be certain until we drive a distance in the rain, but it is a new skylight and it should have fixed the problem. campers are a little like boats, its always something.

bummer on the plumbing diagnosis. I think you'll feel better if you get another quote. I'm not asking for $ amounts here, but that's a big check you will be writing. you'll probably feel better in the long run if another quote and its close to the first one. long ago we thought we would have to do that repair on a house in seattle, but turned out we had a lesser problem. my mothers house had a sump pump but I don't know anything about it.

couple of medical appts today, routine things but getting things done before vacation in sept.

diane sue I agree with Deb. Id leave upper body alone for a while other than PT and regular normal activities. it is what allowed my shoulder to recover...not assuming we had the same problem.

Today I did Butts and Guts—the whole thing. I usually do a shorter premix. Today I felt like I needed all segments. Total time was 74 minutes with 313 calories burned. Average heart rate was 112 and maximum heart rate was 159.

Yesterday we talked with friends/ former neighbors who moved to North Carolina 16 years ago. We had lost touch with each other over the years. Their son was visiting them this summer and he googled my daughter through the University. He found her work phone number and they left a message there. That was in July, but she was out of the office most of that time and just heard the message yesterday. After a series of strange things, we were eventually able to connect. We hope to see them the next time that we go to NC.

Diane Sue, finding relaxing activities sounds like a wonderful idea. Boxing is definitely something to avoid!

Deb, that’s a big plumbing project. A second quote might be a good idea. We had a similar problem a few years ago with our septic tank and it was very expensive to replace the lines.

Hello to Valerie, Lori, and Judy.

This morning I did Kelly's new Cardio Sculpt Overload premix low impact and lower body, 29 minutes, heart rate average 140, max 171, 2,217 steps, 188 calories. I then did some spinning while previewing some of these new workouts. One of them has a bonus extra which is glute lifts and ab work using the step and about 6 minutes long. Spinning was 25 minutes, 132 calories, heart rate average 125, max 162, 1,449 steps. Total time was 54 minutes, 320 calories, 3,666 steps. I had PT this afternoon I am glad that I looked at my calendar as I thought it was 10 am and it was 2:30. Thursday is 10 and my thyroid scan tomorrow is 10 so I guess I just had 10 stuck in my head. Major storms here last night. A lot of areas are without power and some schools are closed. My husband had just rearranged the garage Sunday to fit both of our cars in along with the Harley. I am so glad because the hail was really coming down.
I did modify some of the arm movements in Cardio Sculpt overload to not reach overhead. I just tried to make up for it by increasing the intensity of the lower body. No overload here though. The weight vest is optional. The lower body was all body weight standing moves. Upper uses dumbbells in the workout. I won't be doing those for now. I ordered a 4# weight vest for this that will be here tomorrow. It is made by the same people that made the 8# I bought and I like the design. It doesn't flop around and stays in place. It fits a woman's body. I looked at the Kickboxing workout, but know I won't be doing that one. The weight workout seems to be done by each body part doing barbell, dumbbells, and using tubing. There are premixes that can be using only one of the options. One that skips shoulder. I am not going to be doing upper work other than what the PT tells me to do. Two moves for the shoulder right now with a 1 and 3# db. I told him that 1# move makes it hurt. He watched me perform and told me not to go more than 75% up on the side lying rotation. I also found the other move with the 3#, I was supposed to be lying on the arm while pulling the weight up across my body. I will get these moves right eventually.

Debbie, we had a house that we had to put in a whole new sewer line because of tree roots. They tore up so much of our back yard digging that out with a backhoe. Also hand dug till the guys were fully inside the pit. I had to do a lot of replanting and kept having to go back and buy top soil to fill in things to make it even again. It was very costly and we did call around. The guy we got was very reasonable compared to others and we had had him do plumbing jobs before. He was just not real reliable about showing when he said he would. In fact, my husband had to leave out of country to Iraq and this guy left the back hoe for so long my son called him and told him he needed to come and get it. I think we were storing it for him or something. I wish I could get on the portal at my doctors office. I tried, but there is no way to set up a log in. It just says if you don't have one call the office. Maybe they still don't have their system set. I think I am more worried about the thyroid ultrasound. I am hoping the extra whatever they saw is not accurate or something. Before it was just a nodule.

Valerie, I hope that your camper does not leak next time you have rain. It seems there is always something that needs fixed.

Carolyn, nice work on Butts and Guts and doing all of it. Finding and seeing old friends would be fun. I bet you are looking forward to it.

Hi Everyone,

It's been a crazy week with work and trying to get workouts in. I'll try to catch up on posting soon.

Judy

A lot of the plumbing has to do with how your city divides responsibility for the lines. in seattle we would have been responsible for our house to the street, but once there, it was the city's to deal with. it was old concrete and was done at the end of WWII when supplies were in short supply, and short cuts were done. we didn't have to pay for that repair. I think it depends on where you live, construction at the time, and how laws were written as to financial responsibility. where we live now is completely different.

had a rheumatology appt this morning. my hands are looking pretty bad and people keep saying it looks like rheumatoid arthritis. its not. its plain old osteoarthritis. not that happy a thing, but it is mostly appearance, function is still Ok and no serious discomfort. I get swelling and fluid accumulation near the joints but there is no actual inflammation. also a dental appt, for cleaning etc. killed off the day. no workout. no time. having labs done for some weird obscure things, but it looks like nothing that will need actual treatment.

Carolyn, butts and guts is a hard one. I have not done that one in years. congrats on doing the whole thing. that will be nice to meet up with long ago friends.

we surely expect camper won't leak any more. no way to tell but go out and test it, driving in the rain. quite the ordeal.

Good morning everyone,

Saturday I did a 1 hour Peloton ride, Sunday was a rest from workouts day, Monday I did KCM's new workouts, Cardio Sculpt Overload & Strong and Lean and yesterday I did a 45 minute Peloton ride I've been getting over 20,000 steps a day in at work also. I can't keep up with this "part time" schedule so I will be talking to HR and telling them I only wanted a part time job and my definition of part time is 20-24 hours a week, not 39.5, which seems to be their favorite number of hours to give me. I hurt my wrist lifting something too heavy the other day and that was my wake up call. It's fine now but it could have been worse. Working at HD is too strenuous of a job for me to be doing 40 hours a week. I agree with what you all said last week about there being a management issue and that's why they keep losing people. Also, they don't pay enough and they are losing people to other retailers who pay more. I guess most places are paying $12+ an hour and HD is only paying $11.50 here. Sorry for the long rant, but now I understand why they have such high turnover. I may end up quitting too. Don't be too surprised if that's not my next post, lol!

Deb-so sorry about the flooding :( I'm glad your appliances and treadmill are all ok. We have been very lucky not to have had this happen.

Valerie-Nice workouts this week! I have osteoarthritis in my hands too, and probably in my low back. I have my annual physical and blood work on Friday.

Carolyn-Great job with Butts & Guts! That is a good one! I saw the September rotation and it looks good. I might try doing some of the workouts. I'm not very good at staying with one rotation for a month.

Diane Sue- I have the 4 lb weight vest and it worked well for Cardio Sculpt Overload. I only did the first 29 minutes too, I didn't do the "overload" parts. I really like the weight work in Strong and Lean. I used a 20 lb body bar and 9 lb dumbbells, so pretty light. I didn't want to go too heavy since I did it before work. I think it would be a good workout for heavier weight though.

Hi to Lori,

Judy

Judy that sounds like a thankless job. I'll bet full time people get paid more per hour or get actual benefits, but as long as you are categorized as "part time" you don't qualify. long ago I worked for a company that used us part time people like that. to qualify as full time for benefits, you had to work 4 weeks in a row and you automatically went up. they would schedule us for 3 weeks in a row of 40 hours, and then the 4th week drop us to 12, then back to 40 the next week. they got the work time of full time people but didn't have to compensate us. it was a job that got me thru college so I'm not complaining real hard here , but I definitely felt "used".

off to do a short hike with some friends.

It is a bit of a relief to find out I don't have rheumatoid arthritis or some other condition, but my hands look like it. a family trait from my mothers side. I remember mother, grandmother and aunts having this, but my fathers side didn't, although they had other issues.

This morning I did a Kick Punch and Crunch premix. My time was 44 minutes and 269 calories burned. Average heart rate was 124 and maximum heart rate was 154.

Diane Sue, nice job with Cardio Sculpt Overload and spinning. I’m glad that your PT is going well. What is the brand of your weighted vest? I hope the ultrasound results are good. I had multiple small nodules on my thyroid years ago when I was first diagnosed.

Judy, great job with the new KCM workouts and your Peloton rides. The cycling is probably very therapeutic! I like the looks of the September rotation, too. Cathe does warn that it might get intense and to feel free to adjust. That will be me! I think it’s terrible the way some businesses manipulate part time hours to keep people just under the full time mark.

Valerie, I’m glad that you don’t have rheumatoid arthritis.

Hello to Deb and Lori. Have a wonderful day everyone.
