Pentagenarians & Beyond: April 20, 2025

Today I did Live Low Impact Hiit w/Active Recovery and Live Strong Upper Body on the Ball. I found that one challenging, but doable. We have sun right now! Going to get cloudy later, but it isn't supposed to rain until tonight.

Valerie I'm very much a morning person, and I've worked out mornings the majority of my life. I've done evenings a few times at gyms because of my schedule, but it's much harder for me. Getting up and putting on my workout clothes immediately makes it easier to do cardio if I'm up early. Then I do other stuff after breakfast. Really sorry to hear that your DH's knee is worse again and that you've postponed your trip. Last night the deer ate all my sister's flower blossoms, she has it on camera. She sent last year this year comparison pics of the flowers and it's night and day. Bad deer.

Diane Sue, I was happy with how the dealership handled things with him. I got fed up with my dealership years ago. The wait times are insane. A scheduled oil change shouldn't take an hour and a half. Ugh He's found a local mechanics shop, that's basically attached to Valvoline, and he feels good about them, but they said because of the issue and the fact it's a hybrid they couldn't do it. I'm glad your hip is feeling better.

Hi Carolyn, Judy and Shannon.

Happy Easter. This morning I did 20 minutes of yoga.

Cathy, great job with Live Low Impact HiiT with Active Recovery and Live Strong Upper Body on the Ball. I’m also a morning person. Your preparation for early morning workouts sounds exactly like what I did when I was working. I had to get out of bed and immediately get to the workout. I did make coffee first. These days I usually do my workout around 9:00 am.

Valerie, I’m sorry that your husband’s knee is still bothering him causing you to postpone your trip. I hope they can figure out what the problem is.

Diane Sue, great job with CDorner high or low impact cardio and stretching. I hope the rain holds off enough for the children to have their Easter egg hunt.

Hello to Judy and Shannon.

cathyshe could get deer stopper spray although sprays wash off in the rain. next year deer may totally ignore the flowers. we use some spray but mostly avoid attractive plants. deer change their minds about what tastes good by the year. fences seldom work unless they are completely enclosed. even then they are surprisingly good and wiggling in or over.
we are not happy about the knee. this is his first major problem. its better again today but there is some sort of damage lurking that we don't want to get activated when we are miles from a trailhead. he had an appt to see ortho friday but will try to finagle an mri before so they have some imaging. one doc already looked at it and thought it was ok. I still think meniscal tear. hoping it doesn't need surgery but i think it will.
I used to run early in the morning. even now if we ride or hike we go early but that's not rolling out of bed and working out. nope, need some coffee, food, a little time.

Good morning, ladies. Back to the grind. Sigh. Oh well, it pays the bills. Let's see, Saturday I took a walk, did stuff around the house and got a nice stretch in before bed. Not a big yard day though, so it doesn't count as a workout. ;) Sunday I took Sara on a couple of walks, but those are slow, and she stops to sniff everything. So basically, not a super active weekend.

Thunderstorms moved through yesterday evening. There were bad storms to the south of us, and a tornado touched down a little to the east. This is a busy tornado season so far. Ugh.

Cathy - I've always exercised in the evening, after work. It helps to get the kinks out from sitting all day. But I had one job where I had to work later in the evening. So I'd get up at 4, exercise first thing, eat a quick breakfast, then go feed the horses, all before work. I hated it. Working out that early was NOT fun.

Carolyn - nice job with the yoga.

Valerie - I hope the docs can figure out quickly what's wrong with your husband's knee. I'm really sorry it's getting worse. But wow, that's awesome that it's his first major problem. Good for him!

I hope everyone had a nice Easter. Hello to Judy and Diane.

So this morning I did STS2 Mobility 1 and the latest Live, Push Ups, Sit Ups and Planks Oh My! Wow, that was hard. It's only 4 rounds which doesn't sound bad, but again Wow! LOL So, on Friday my Mom got an official diagnosis of Alzheimers. My Grandma and her sister (96 and still going) both had dementia, so we were thinking that. Of course, she refused meds and is mad at everyone, everyone thinks she's nuts. We had our weekly chat last night and 5 minutes before Dad messages us that she's pissed at everyone. So we ask if we should do the call, wait... and then while we're waiting for a response, he starts the call and she's sitting right there. It never got mentioned and we just chatted about other stuff the whole time. That's the way she rolls. She's spews everything out at my Dad and then acts ok with everyone else. Ugh I wanted to go walk after I shower and the winds have gone insane. Given the potential in our yard for things to fall over, I'm staying inside.

Shannon I'm glad the storms didn't impact you.

Valerie my sister has tried the deer spray and I think she decided it wasn't worth it, because the deer didn't seem to be all that deterred. I hope your husband is able to get an MRI.

Carolyn me getting in my workouts has been greatly aided by my being ready first thing.

Hi Judy and Diane Sue.

Today I did Low Impact Sweat plus Icy Core 2. That was 41 minutes, 206 calories burned, average heart rate 120, and maximum heart rate 170.

Cathy, great job with STS 2 Mobility 1 and Live Push Ups, Sit Ups, and Planks, Oh My. I applaud you for doing that workout!! I guess it’s good to have a definitive diagnosis for your Mom, but that must be hard news to hear. Hopefully she will take the medication that’s prescribed for her.

Shannon, I‘m glad that you survived the storms. Good job with your weekend activity even though it didn’t seem like much to you. Any movement is better than nothing at all.

Hello to Valerie, Judy, and Diane Sue.

yesterday I did a shorter than usual yard walk. I misplaced the mailbox key and thought I had dropped it outside so went looking for it. re walked the area I'.d walked the day before. later i found I hung it in the kitchen rather than by the garage door so all ended well. for a long time now we need a locking mailbox.

DH didnt finagle the mri. has to see ortho doc first. it will still probably happen faster than for a non medical person because this clinic has their own imaging center so it will probably happen quickly. . he is restricting himself but some activity is ok. he has had some other problems but thi is the first time it looks like he might need a procedure to fix something. except for teeth. he has spent half his adult life in a dental chair.
shannon what awful weather. I could not live in a place with weather like that. I would have trekked off to parts far west i hope you are prepared to shelter if you need to. i lose sleep just thinking about it.
Deer spray usefulness is so-so. if you have particular plants protected, it works but re-spray is needed after very much rain. sometimes the damage is from deer walking all over everything looking for 'lunch' and for that spray works for us. it discourages them from browsing.

cathy thats too bad about your mom. I've never read anything very positive about any of the anti Alzheimer meds, so it may not matter much if she refuses to take anything. sort of good news/bad news. alzheimers is bad for everyone.

ive been doing my therapy work and last night I did stacked upper body, an enhanced version of half of it. I dont like going thru it twice so I do one time thru it with higher rep numbers plus more push ups and balances.

Yesterday I worked a 6 hour shift at HD. It wasn’t too busy but I still managed to get almost 8 miles in. Today I did a 1 hour Peloton Power Zone ride, 10 minutes of cool down and 10 minutes of Arms & Light Weights.

Cathy-Great job with Live Low Impact Hiit w/Active Recovery, Live Strong Upper Body on the Ball, STS 2 Mobility 1 and Live Push Ups, Sit Ups, and Planks, Oh My. That last one sounds pretty challenging. I’m sorry about your mom’s diagnosis.

Carolyn-Great job with Yoga and Low Impact Sweat plus Icy Core 2. Thank you for starting the thread this week.

Valerie-I’m sorry about your husband’s knee. I hope he can get a diagnosis soon. Nice job with your walk, therapy work and Stacked Upper Body.

Shannon-It does look like it’s been a busy tornado season so far. I’m glad that the storms yesterday didn’t affect you.

Hi to Diane Sue.

judy that is incredible. i didn't realize that much distance got covered during a work shift. good in a way and not in others. no wonder you need good shoes.

Today I did Raw Upper Weights with Sammy, 32 minutes, 89 calories followed by Raw Yoga Stretch 14 minutes, 28 calories. Total time 44 minutes, 117 calories. I had my doctor's appointment this afternoon so managed a quick workout before I left today. My doctor has a specialist calling me to see about a procedure where they put something like a cement that hardens in that chronic partial compression fracture in my vertebrae. She says she has seen patients get it done and it stops the pain. They fill the space there with something like a cement that hardens like bone. She also ordered a bone density scan in that hip again.

Valerie-I was looking back at my old work schedules from 2019 and I was working so many hours during the busy season. I don't know how I did it. You are right, the exercise is good in a way but not so much in other ways. It was fun at first but it definitely wore me down.

Good morning, ladies. Yesterday I lifted weights on my own. I really feel like I get a better weight workout than with Cathe. I know that sounds really odd, LOL. But I can’t lift as heavy as I want to because of my hands, so I can’t maximize gains with Cathe’s workouts. I’ve found ways to tweak things on my own that I can’t do during a DVD workout, due to Cathe’s speed, or the way I have to set things up, etc. I also did STS 2.0 Metabolic Core.

Cathy – a whole workout of push ups, sit ups and planks??? Oh my is right! Way to go on finishing that workout! I know that you and your family already knew your mom has dementia, but hearing it’s official probably still hurts. I’m sorry everyone has to go through this.

Carolyn – good job on Low Impact Sweat and Icy Core 2. Yep, I like weekends with lots of movement, even if it isn’t hard work. I just feel so much better than after a day at the computer.

Valerie – I’m glad you found your mailbox key and that it wasn’t buried in leaves or whatever. I’ve lived here since I was 10, so storms are just part of life. I certainly am not blasé about them by any means, though. My parents have a storm cellar, so if things get really bad, the whole family goes up and packs in. We’ve only had to do that a few times in all the time we’ve been here though. I do NOT want to go west, not after my time in California last year. It’s way, way too dry and barren out there. I know the northwest is different, but most of the west is just plain YUCK.

Judy – that’s a lot of walking! Wow. I hope you have a nice long break before your next shift.

Diane – I feel the need to warn you against that procedure. Last fall, my mom had a hard fall which resulted in a compression fracture of one of her lower vertebrae. We also heard about that procedure, and she really wanted to do it at first. But then we learned more about it, some from a friend who actually had it done. It can really mess up the rest of your spine because of the difference in how pressure is distributed. For this friend, it caused other vertebrae to fracture, and then they filled those with the cement, and it happened again. Mom heard somewhere else that it did not stop the pain, but made it worse. In addition, Mom’s doctor said that it’s not a good idea if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia, because of that very problem. So please research carefully!

Just finished LIS Turbobarre, the barre portion only which is the bulk of the workout. Sunny and hoping to walk more today. I walked some yesterday, but the winds were so strong, and some of the gusts were crazy, so I walked when it was just very windy.

Carolyn my Mom didn't even get a prescription because she refused. While the Alzheimer's med don't necessarily work well, they would include something to reduce her anxiety. The woman fears everything! and that would help her a lot.

Valerie it's always a pain when things get misplaced. I've gotten pretty good at being consistent where I put things, but it happens. My DH is close to blind without his glasses, and when he can't find them, I have to help. Years ago we had a tall desk, and I looked everywhere I could think of, but he'd put them on top of the desk, which was at least a foot above my head and finally found them himself. LOL If it's above my head, I'm not seeing it!

Judy that's a lot of steps and on a hard floor, too!

Hi Shannon and Diane Sue.

I am usually really good about putting things back where they came from. I hung the key up, but not in the usual place. Dumb! DH misplaces way more things than I do, but lesson learned.

we mt biked this morning for the first time in a long time. the tree farm was closed a good part of this winter with logging near where we ride, then I had the pacemaker replacement and the cataract procedure. so it seemed a bit shaky to start but we did our basic winter ride this morning. 5 miles, 1 hr 20 minutes. it was ok. i need to go more often before I feel comfortable with it. every visit is a little different and this season we need to find out what trails are still available and what has been removed. we will see if DH's knee is ok. we ended up on one short bit of trail that started ok but the end of it where it joined the road was obliterated. i found i could walk the bike down one big line of truck tire track to get where i needed to go. this was not even close to rideable. probably other places like it that we will find out about by riding.

Cathy DH has lost his close vision and then tosses the readers everywhere so I do a lot more "interpretation" of small things for us. hes not very tall either, lucky for me.
I would think anti anxiety meds would be helpful for your mom. you dont want anything to make her dementia worse. can you talk to her doctor or doctors staff about this to see what he might be able to prescribe for her? and then of course, talk her into trying it. you may need your mother/father written ok for office to talk to you about her care. seems like an unnecessary obstacle but there plenty of reasons, believe me.

diane sue you need to look up whatever that procedure is called and learn more about it. whatever it's called you can look it up at specialty places like Mayo or Cleveland Clinic( there are plenty more) and get a clearer idea of whats involved. its risks/benefits, alternatives to that procedure. if it has to do with your back you want to proceed carefully.

This morning I did STS 2.0 Upper Body 2 express, 1 set. My time was 50 minutes with 145 calories burned, average heart rate 106, and maximum heart rate 137.

Valerie, good work with therapy exercises Stacked Sets Upper Body, plus push ups and balance exercises. I’m glad that your mailbox key was not lost.

Judy, that’s a lot of walking during your work shift. Great job with the Peloton Power Zone ride, cool down, and Arms & Light Weights.

Diane Sue, great job with Raw Upper Weights and Raw Yoga Stretch. I want to second Shannon’s caution about a possible procedure for your spine. I know that you research things carefully, so I won’t say anything more.

Shannon, nice job with your own weight workout and STS 2.0 Metabolic Core.

Cathy, great job with Turbobarre.

Have a good day everyone.

Today I did a 45-minute Peloton Full Body Strength class and 45 minutes of Peloton Restorative yoga.

Diane Sue-Great job with Raw Upper Weights with Sammy and Raw Yoga Stretch. I agree with Shannon and Carolyn about being very cautious with having a spinal procedure done.

Shannon-Great job with your own weight lifting and STS 2.0 Metabolic Core. I don’t work again until next Sunday so I’ve got a nice break in between shifts now that I don’t get scheduled on weekdays.

Cathy-Great job with Turbobarre. It does sound like an antianxiety medicine would help your Mom.

Valerie-Great job with your mountain bike ride.

Carolyn-Great job with STS 2.0 Upper Body 2 express.

Today I did LMR Functional Mobility Fusion, 43 minutes, 129 calories. My husband I took Harvey to the park later for a walk. He sure does not walk well. He tries to hide between our legs or just lay flat on the ground. We sat on some benches a couple of times just so he got more comfortable with other people around. We have a lot of work training on that. I am getting a mammogram and bone scan Thursday morning for my hip. I was glad when I called this morning, they were able to work me in to get both.

I did read last night and more this morning on the Vertebral procedure. I read John Hopkins and Mayo Clinic and am having second thoughts. I did read that sometimes it can cause other fractures just doing the procedure. Also, even if it helps it may only last a little while. I always research before something like that. I think maybe I need to see about a back brace or something. Although my doctor says since it is chronic and has been there for so long it probably won't heal.
Thanks, ladies for your concern. I hesitated when she mentioned it. Needles in my spine scare me. My rheumatologist suggested an epidural or something and showed me where he would put it in my neck and I could do right then or have someone to drive me home and have something to relax me. I told him I would wait and that has been three years ago. I have less space in my neck and a lot of pain in that area. It pretty much goes halfway down my back. I had a needle biopsy in my neck once that was a disaster, and the doctor hit something, and I felt it and nearly jumped off the table. It took twice as long as it was supposed to and lidocaine twice. I had pain and tingling up my neck that still crops up in the area.

Cathy, sorry about your mother's Alzheimer's diagnosis. I know it is rough on the rest of the family. My heart goes out to you. Nice work on Turbo Barre the barre portion only.

Shannon, nice work on weights on your own. I am sure it is easier doing it on your own. I am always pausing dvds to get some piece of equipment or change up something the way Cathe does it. Also good job on STS 2.0 Metabolic Core after the weights.

Judy, good job on the Peloton Full Body Strength Class 45 minutes and Peloton Restorative Yoga.

Valerie, that is nice that you were able to get in a bike ride this afternoon. The procedure is a vertebroplasty. When I got a chance I looked it up. I also read up on the doctor that she wanted me to see. Anyway, I did go to the main medical sites to read up on it. My doctor gave them a my number to talk to me since I was not sure about it. It sounded at first like a quick easy thing, but I don't think it is.

Carolyn, nice work on STS 2 Upper Body Express 1 set.

diane sue those are good sources. i was stunned when I realized i needed a big surgical procedure. i have serious scoliosis L 2-5. i made up a list of doctors who did this surgery. names from my primary care, my physiatrist, and from the orthopedic group i already had used in the past. I picked 3 people to see out of a dozen names.
its important to write things down to keep people and their approaches separate. i made a folder for each one. you think you will remember but spread out over several months it all gets confused and runs together. it took me 6 months to see them and come to a decision. .
#1 guy wanted to realign my entire spine. #2, #3 wanted to do a lesser (but not minor) surgery. I ruled out #1 one guy right away. the other two had similar plans. I picked because #2 because his approach seemed better for my age and I liked him better. he was organized, his staff people were good, and he was prepared when I saw him. #3 was less organized and seemed prone to delay and was part of the university system.
I dont know if you will have as many options as i did. big city/metro area there lots of people to pick from can be both good in a way and bad in a way.
the docs arent going to go away. think about it and dont feel you need to rush into it.
when I first saw what the procedure would entail, I was totally stunned and needed time to digest the whole idea and decide if I was best off leaving well enough alone, or going thru this surgery and maybe somewhat fixing a big structural problem. Take your time.

Yesterday's Turbobarre was highly efficient. LOL Was feeling it by afternoon and did Stretch Max with the band before supper hoping it would help. Hamstrings, low back and especially glutes are still pretty sore today. I did High Intensity Step from 4DS. I'd forgotten how intense those blasts are! Then I did Restorative Yoga. I'll try and get back later, but I have some things I need to get done.
