Over 40 Stumped

I've been working out for the past 10 years. I am diligent at working out 6 days a week. I am soon to be 43 years old and in relatively good shape. But during the past year I've noticed my shape changing around the middle and lately more so in the belly area. This is VERY upsetting to me as I have always have great abs. My diet is really lean and well planned out with the exception of my love of wine in the evening. I do cardio 4 times a week and weight training 2-3 times a week. Lately I am trying to increase my cardio by at least an additional 20-30 minutes each day. I am also lengthening the time I work out when I do strength training. I really am obsessed with this problem. I do ab work 3 tmes a week for 10-20 minutes each time.
I am determined that since getting older is inevitable, I will "go down fighting". Is there anything else I can do?x(

I know exactly what you mean when you say "I will go down fighting." I am 49 and workout, eat well, etc. Let me ask you a question which might seem strange to you? Are you eating enough? I know a women who eats very lean throughout the day, probably eats less than 1500 calories every day and has a problem with her middle as well. From some research I've read, the body tends to want to hold onto fat if it is not getting enough of it. It's called something like "starvation mode." Just a thought!

I'm right there with you. I eat about 1500-1700 calories every day (and that's with the wine..hee hee). I'm 44 and have to work out so hard to even maintain.

What I've been reading lately and am going to try is to incorporate more weight training and less cardio. Everyone seems to agree on other posts.

I recently found sparkpages.com for tracking my food diary. It's great to make sure you are getting the right amount of fats, carbs, proteins, vitamins. The only thing it's tough knowing how much more protein you may need to feed the muscle for weigh training. Guess our bodies will scream if it wants more, right?

Have a great weekend everyone. Work out, have fun!

You share the same dilemma of all we die hards...and one thing ya gotta realize - figures change after 40, as does vision - often rapidly...rather than try to look like a teen ager, it might be easier to go for looking like you've been at the gym....go for strength.....my friends and I have had terrific success with body for life.....working out more effectively, and LESS! Eating more frequently, the right things, and its been great for mood swings in late afternoon too! You might want to try a 3 month challenge, we were shocked at the good results....
